I expect Cam to struggle at the line but not Banks. Even Stirtz missed a couple IIRC. Tough to beat good teams without making FTs (but somehow we did50% from the FT line by everyone not named Alvaro.
IOWA FT shooting:

6-6 (100%): Alvaro

That in bounds pass from Cooper to Stirtz was tight!! Great job by Cooper getting that on the money!
Answered prayers! Bunch of us were praying please God just this once in the game thread lol. With Al pointing up to the sky I think he had some help from above and his dad had the best seat in the house!I expect Cam to struggle at the line but not Banks. Even Stirtz missed a couple IIRC. Tough to beat good teams without making FTs (but somehow we did)
Refs were not B1G level bad, I give them a 7/10. They gifted some cheapies to both sides. There were a few times I thought they let some hard Florida push offs or reach ins go uncalled. They waited too long to call the tie up which resulted in the altercation and double tech. The announcers never talked about this, or the guy flipping Fulgueras, they just focused on the "punch". Jirak getting trucked by Chinyelu at the end of the 1st half was a bad miss, too. I know you never want to gift free throws with 1 second left like that, but I've never seen a person get hit that hard in a bball game. Watch the gif if you can find it, someone posted it on twitter and I'm surprised Jirak's back isn't broken in 3 places.
1/3 of the B1G in the Sweet 16.
38% of the remaining field comes from the B1G.
When's the last time an Iowa team overcame so much adversity in such a BIG MOMENT?
NO ONE (who were not Iowa fans or players/coaches) gave us a chance.
nd just think, He COULD have been ejected in the first half, had the refs not made the right call on replay......When's the last time an Iowa team overcame so much adversity in such a BIG MOMENT?
NO ONE (who were not Iowa fans or players/coaches) gave us a chance.
With regard to officiating, was almost waiting for a whistle when the guard drove the baseline in the last second or two-whew!As a coach, and as someone who has taken the tests and has officiated at the high school level once upon a time (and by no means does this make me an expert), I'm a little bit more judgemental of officiating, but I also try to view things with perspective. I try to understand what the officials were seeing and what their thought process was in various situations and calls.
I felt that this crew certainly missed some calls (as we all know), and came dangerously close to interjecting themselves a bit too much towards the end of the game...........but I did not think it was overall poorly officiated. It was a physical game from both sides, and Iowa earned a lot of the fouls they got called for, as did Florida.
I'd say that we were very fortunate things went our way with Folgeiras' "phantom punch", and I agree with the ruling in the moment. Roles reversed, our fanbase would absolutely be furious that we'd get a double tech out of that, but the point was on the excessive force by Condon that started it. It served as a fair warning to both players.
Yes, there were other missed calls later on like Jirak getting shoulder checked to the floor and Condon stiff-arming Koch, but those kind of heat-of-the-moment plays happen 20 times a game and go uncalled, and it doesn't necessarily mean the game itself is being poorly officiated.
At the very least, on the situations where they messed up, they went back and got the calls right, albeit mostly thanks to the teams having to challenge calls, but that's what they're there for.
That does speak to a broader discussion about the protocol for these challenges and why a team could potentially be punished for not having challenges to argue a missed call, clock or shot situation, even if they were successful on all their challenges, but again that's for another discussion.
I tend not to overreact as much about whether or not a game in its entirety was poorly officiated because the vast majority of the time, most fans don't even understand what they're arguing about to begin with and all fanbases assume that the refs are "out to get our boys (or girls)"
P.S. of course in the case of the women's game, you can actually make more of an argument for bad officiating across the board from game to game. The problem is it's not going to improve all that much anytime soon, so we need to kind of accept it's just unfortunately a part of the game teams have to play through. Doesn't make it right, and doesn't mean the NCAA should stop trying to elevate the level of officiating in the women's game, but for now.......we just have to deal with it.
With all that said, I won't feel like this was a game where we "overcame the officials" and I certainly wouldn't have made it a top 10 reason for why we lost if it had come to that. Our FT shooting was not exactly up to standard (and we got to the FT line plenty) and our 3 pt shooting in stretches and by certain key players was abysmal.
And of course, watch, I'll technically defend the refs in this game, and we'll get a horsesh** clown show on Thursday against Nebraska because we're only allowed nice things for so long..................![]()
But like their more rational fans said, Florida can't win playing Iowa's game.Still hard to believe Stirtz was 0-9 from three.
Florida has to be scratching their heads....
Banks could make a million dollars next year if he returns. Do it!Cam is back next year. I think you meant we lose Stirtz and Hausen for sure; possibly Banks.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose someone else to the portal, but that’s a discussion for another day.
Either way, the future is bright, provided we have a productive portal season.
There is always this place. Foooook yah!Too bad the game isn't at Carver. Ya think we might have a sellout, students, everyone wanting in? Lol
If “shoving” is the new standard for fouling, the game would still be being played! There are big boyz abs if you don’t think Uiwa players didn’t “shove” Florida plasters, you are nutz.Well the massive black dude had a few nice shoves never get called. Especially the one at the end of the first half that should’ve been a flagrant and had us shooting ft’s. The foul call on Cam at the end to give Fl ft’s and the lead. Coop got shoved hard in the chest at one point. Those were the egregious ones, im sure there were more
Just think. Without those challenges Iowa ends up getting screwed on two late game, crucial out of bounds calls. I don't see how they win this game prior to the challenging rules. As a coach, and as someone who has taken the tests and has officiated at the high school level once upon a time (and by no means does this make me an expert), I'm a little bit more judgemental of officiating, but I also try to view things with perspective. The officiating was “fair” however. Gimme “fair” officiating any day..the players can adjust…. The size difference between the 2 teams lead to the more physical play… the refs did a good job for the most part of “finding a middle ground” and staying there.A clear Flagrant 2 went uncalled. For it not to be called or reviewed is mind blowing. I think Ben needs to address it better with the officials before play resumes. But they have to check the monitors there.
I’ll respect your opinion on the 7/10 for the officiating. If I was being generous, I’d give them a 3. Maybe a 3.5 because they didn’t over react to the AF tie up like the ignorant commenters did.
The officiating for this level, at this stage is laughable at best. It was bad.
Thankfully, Jim Bain wasn’t working this game. With regard to officiating, was almost waiting for a whistle when the guard drove the baseline in the last second or two-whew!
Kansas might open up this year as the rumors are that Self is going to retire for health reasons. Kentucky also has a good shot of opening up. You have to believe that Ben will be getting a call from them if those things happen. At this point, Iowa needs to do whatever they can to make sure he stays. FWIW, he's an Iowa guy and I've heard that his wife doesn't want to move again but there comes a point where you can't say no to a massive check.Cam is back next year. I think you meant we lose Stirtz and Hausen for sure; possibly Banks.

So the big black dude running full speed with his shoulder into the back of Jirak to end the half was just a basketball play, no big deal? That should’ve been an easy flagrant call, like no question not even debatable. Him shoving Cooper out of bounds and clearing a lane for a layup was just a basketball play? Cooper getting a fully extended arm in the chest was just a physical basketball play? Im all for physical play when it’s actually part of the action. Those 3 no calls were just plain bad. Overall I thought they did a good job officiating the game, but they let Fla get away with some excessive ****. Iowa plays physical in your face D, but it doesn’t extend past basketball plays. Can’t say that about Florida last nightIf “shoving” is the new standard for fouling, the game would still be being played! There are big boyz abs if you don’t think Uiwa players didn’t “shove” Florida plasters, you are nutz.
With the size difference of the two teams, lots of contact was expected. The refs kept things pretty much even. Iowa was moving Florida players to “equal” the size difference and Florida was moving Uowa guys to take advantage of their size advantage. Was it perfect? Nope… but it was “fair” to both sides.
BM wants "tough dudes".
And how did Florida not get a shot off?
Sounds like NC might be open as well? I just don’t see Ben leaving though. He stayed at a D2 school for 15 years after winning 4 national championships there. I guarantee there were offers for him to leave. I think the only reason he left was because it was an Iowa school he left for. And I don’t think he leaves Drake without it being Iowa that offered. He doesn’t seem like the type that’s going to be moving around, he wants to build at 1 school. And i’m sure glad that place is in Iowa City!Kansas might open up this year as the rumors are that Self is going to retire for health reasons. Kentucky also has a good shot of opening up. On one of his most recent interviews he talked specifically about loyalty and how important that is. He might get some calls but have to believe this is where he wants to be. If the ref thought it happened AFTER time expired, he made the right call. You will note that no one ever bothered to ask either coach or officials for their opinion. I tend to believe the ref thought time had expired just before the contact. But perhaps the ref went “no call” because he had $$ on Florida. So the big black dude running full speed with his shoulder into the back of Jirak to end the half was just a basketball play, no big deal? The clock doesn’t mean jackshit in that situation. You trying to say there can’t be a flagrant after the clock hits zero’s? They missed that call, plain and simple. If the ref thought it happened AFTER time expired, he made the right call. But Iowa has Ben and St. John's has that scumbag Pitino. Not all things that look alike are the same.St. John’s earns their first Sweet Sixteen since 1999, and less than 2 hours later we do the same. Crazy.
