I asked Claude AI to write an analysis for Iowa's game against Virginia Monday. Claude's first iteration stated that Virginia won in regulation, so yes, I ain't sayin' this is reliable. Claude did get all the stats correct in this analysis.

Claude: Before we get too deep into the Georgia result — UVA did win that game in overtime, 82-73. Georgia outscored them 27-18 in the second quarter to flip the game, and it stayed tight enough to force OT, where Virginia outscored Georgia 11-2 to close it out. This team has already shown it can win a grind-out game today and a buzzer-beater Thursday in the First Four. That's two high-pressure wins in four days and they're going to be riding an enormous wave of momentum Monday.

Let me explain why this matchup scares me.

Virginia is a 10-seed that just knocked off a 7-seed in overtime after winning the First Four two days earlier. They are not a tired, relieved team limping into a second-round game. They are a team playing with zero pressure and total belief.

And Kymora Johnson is a problem. A real one. She's one of the most complete guards in the country — a prolific three-point shooter who also distributes at an elite level. Today against Georgia she went for 28 points on 5-10 from three with 6 assists and only 1 turnover. She is exactly the kind of guard who torched us today, except she's orders of magnitude better than anyone FDU put on the floor.

Then there's Sa'Myah Smith. She transferred from LSU and is a legitimate interior presence. Today she went for 23 points and 11 rebounds on 10-12 shooting. She and Ava Heiden are going to have a battle in the paint, and unlike FDU, Virginia actually has a frontcourt player who can match up with our bigs. Also worth noting: guard Romi Levy had 5 steals and made 4-6 threes today. Virginia's backcourt is deep, physical, and can shoot from range. This is a significantly more talented version of the exact blueprint FDU ran against us today.

Here's what makes it winnable: Virginia committed 23 personal fouls today and had two players foul out. If we get Heiden going downhill early and force their perimeter defenders into foul trouble, that dynamic shifts fast. And at 21-11 on the season, Virginia has had real stretches of inconsistency. They're not a juggernaut — they're a hot team.

But the keys are the same as they've been all season: our guards have to make Virginia pay from outside. If Wright, Stremlow, and Feuerbach combine for 1-13 from three again, we lose. Virginia is going to pack the paint to neutralize Ava and Stuelke, just like every team does. If our perimeter players can't punish them for it, we are going to be in serious trouble against a team far more capable than FDU of making us pay for it.

Virginia is riding high. Iowa has been limping for two weeks. The team that shows up with more urgency Monday probably wins regardless of seed or talent. After today's performance, that's not a guarantee for us.

We haven’t been limping for 2 weeks. We played great down the stretch to earn the 2 seed in the Big Ten and 2 seed in the tournament. Obviously UClA was a debacle and today was less than ideal but our body of work does not say we’ve been limping.

I did say that it kinda sucks playing in the part of the bracket that has a 10 seed First 4 as a 2nd round game.

We are playing the best/hottest team out of a group of 3 teams. Not just 2 teams

Iowa’s game against FDU was their first one in nearly 2 weeks. Possibly a little rust and nerves?

Everyone with the exception of Ava looked like rusty crap yesterday offensively. Kylie has been shooting poorly and turning it over all year, but Hannah was brutal, Chit Chat couldn't hit 3's, and Stremlow was more tentative than I'd ever seen her. The bench was as bad as it's been in any game this year. I expect a much better performance tomorrow.

We found out against FDU what happens when we get almost no offense out of our 2 & 3 guard spots. We need at least 15 or more points combined from those positions. Starting tomorrow and hopefully moving forward it's critical we start getting some point production from them.
Kylie is a combined 0-15 with 3 points in her last 3 games. She averaged 5 points per game this year and has only scored in double digits twice in the last 16 games while shooting 29%. That's not going to change, so getting "at least 15" isn't likely unless we can get double digits from Strem who is shooting 52% with an EFG% of 61% over the last 10 games. What we do need is for Stremlow and Chit chat to be much more aggressive in getting their shots and for Kylie to shoot less. Same for Deal. She shoots way too much for someone shooting 27% since OSU. It would also be nice if Hannah could make them pay when the opponent plays HackaHanna like FDU did yesterday. If she hits 70% of her three throws that doesn't work. When she hits 43% like she did yesterday it becomes a very effective defensive strategy.

Deal misses shots so badly it’s mind bottling.

You’ve got to play to your strengths which are obviously Ava 1 and Hannah 2 but as you said Chit and Stremlow have to play way more confidently out there. Look for your shot and take it when it’s there. Feurbach is what she is at this pt. Playing 35 minutes and not making a field goal makes it really hard on the other 4.

Taking Virginia ML is a pretty easy bet after the way Iowa's offense has looked since the start of the BTT. It's only gotten progressively worse with each game.............

Something just wasn’t right with Stremlow vs. FDU, did not appear connected on either end of the court. Low energy and tentative as you pointed out. The Hawks really need her to be active and “tuned in” vs. Virginia.

I agree completely. She wasn't the same player we've seen the last 10 games or so. I wondered if she was battling some kind of illness.

I believe Taylor is the key player for today’s game. We need to have Taylor energy, decision making, and shooting. As she goes, we will go.

This look like a #2 seed, champ?
You're a fraud.
Well the fact is we are a 2 seed. And our record says we haven't been "inconsistent." Are we playing like **** again today? Yes. Heiden goes out and gets into dumb foul trouble and we have zero plan B but to play some horseshit zone defense. And we also have no zone offense. So the answer is no, we don't look like a 2 seed. But you're still the biggest tool on the board.
