Herb Sendek tried to call timeout

Regardless, you can call a TO during a dead ball. The clock is stopped till touched inbounds.
No, you absolutely cannot call a TO, as the opposing coach, if the player has the ball out of bounds attempting to throw it in bounds. Only the team with the ball can do that. That would create chaos.

Sendek is awesome, but running down the sideline calling TO when the ball is being inbounded and Oweh is the dribbling it to the final shot is not a successful TO. When he sees the replay, he will know that he did not unequivocally call TO or that the refs just chose not to grant it.

No, that is not the rule. It has been explained multiple times in the various threads.
Well, I did say correct me.of I'm wrong. I don't read all threads and have quite a few on my ignore list so this being explained in multiple threads response really doesn't tell me anything. But thanks for the most helpful information.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come off like it sounded. I was just a bit frustrated because so many posters are posting wrong information. Anyway, there isn't 100% agreement but one reliable source says that once DA secured the ball inbounds (Matt Jones also said this), it eliminated the SC coach calling a timeout. Other sources say that once DA stepped out of bounds with the ball, it eliminated the timeout option for SC.

After watching the video multiple times, the timeout was being called when DA was still inbounds with the ball, IMO. However, it was a bang bang play and the ref was walking away with his back to the SC coach as he was calling the timeout. No matter how you look at it, it is obvious that Sendek should have tried to call the TO sooner and he should have been further down the court. He was somewhat camouflaged by the bench, IMO.

Kentucky lost the game. A technicality and SCs abject stupidity in not fouling saved us but in everyone's mind it's another embarrassing defeat and an indictment of the phys ed teacher on the sidelines
It was once said that more games are lost then won.
I m not sure you would understand why this was said and even know who the man was that said this.

UK won the game. .
Most often it is not one play that loses the game. What about all the palming the ball and carrying the ball calls that were missed?

Go back and watch the film showing what the coach was doing when his team made their last shot.
His arms were folded. He was not thinking about a TO at that moment. Once the ball is inbounds did he attempt to call a TO.

If the coach was as smart as he thought he was, he would have been waiting with his hands in a TO position to call the TO to get his team defense set and the proper play would be up by 3 to foul the moment the ball was in bounds. 2 shots. SC wins by 1.

Almost every game you hear an announcer say something about how fast UK goes baseline to baseline so why would you as the coach not know that?

If you think coach is nothing but a PE teacher then you must be one of his special ed students he has.

Herb trying to call a time out after UK has the ball is like Michael Scott yelling I declare bankruptcy when he's going broke. (for you Office fans). He needed to have called it immediately (he hesitated) or coach one of his players in those situations to call TO to the official on the baseline. And Herb yeah it was a tough break so go win the game in OT.

I don't know why this is so difficult for some to understand unless of course they have an agenda.

Another fact being overlooked is that Oweh said that they practice what to do in these situations EVERY game day. Our players knew exactly what to do with no time outs, down 3, under 3 seconds and they executed it perfectly. That is good coaching!

The SC players had no idea what to do. The guy who hit the go ahead 3 was celebrating and ran to stand inside the 3 point line with a 2nd player. They didn't call TO. They didn't foul. They played it like it was a 2 point game with 10 seconds left. Sendek, as you said, had his arms folded, and wasn't ready. That is bad coaching!

Agree. Watch O's shot again. It was not a shot you see at halftime where someone is shooting for a prize. O had great form on his shot, follow through and he shot it with confidence.

AND, he said he was watching the shot clock as he was dribbling up court! Aberdeen and Oweh played this perfectly.

Slightly OT here, but did that shot by Oweh make it 3 games where Oweh saved Pope from having 3 additional losses the past two seasons?

Yesterday, and 2 against Oklahoma last season, correct?

Yep. It's Sendek's fault for not having them prepared for that situation and to foul. The tears are absolutely delicious. UK haters know how much fun we've had through the years and they are SEETHING that we are sitting back and having more fun. It's too much for them.

Funny I see us playing Iowa State tomorrow. How is that possible if we " lost" the game. IMHO you might be the biggest POS on this board.

You have to call the timeout before the player picks up the ball . Aberdeen had the ball to inbounds so play goes on. I thought this was common basketball knowledge

So under Herbie’s logic, if you’re playing a team that runs mostly secondary transition and pushes the ball even off made buckets, you can call timeouts if they gather the ball and get out in front of your defense?

Sounds pretty stupid to me

Sendek may have started his TO motion when DA got the ball, but he was also quickly moving down the sideline trying to call TO as Oweh was dribbling the ball. At that point, he knew he could not get TO. Maybe he was just emphasizing out of frustration?

DA was smart to grab the ball and get it going. It was bang-bang. The fact that the TO was not recognized while DA had the ball and was moving to the end line is understandable. The fact that coaches will call TO in that instant is irrelevant, because many will let the ball be played, because things get crazy for the other team. 2.4 seconds is a short time. Call TO and they may add some to the clock.

Sendek was asked so he answered. But it was irrelevant.
