Of the 13 teams above us:
  • 12 have made the CFP at least once
  • 9 have made the title game at least once
  • 6 have won the national championship at least once.
Meanwhile, below us reside 14 teams that have made the CFP at least once (Washington, TCU, Miami, Texas, SMU, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Florida State, Tennessee, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Mississippi, and of course, Indiana).

The only team above Iowa to never appear in the CFP is Memphis. So it's virtually inarguable that Iowa has been the most successful power conference program in the CFP era....that has not made the CFP.

Maybe it's time to change that. Hell, even hall-of-fame-level choke artist Sergio Garcia finally broke through and actually won a major. If he can do it, Iowa Football can.

The playoff expansion to 12 teams makes a difference here. In 2015, #5 Iowa easily would have made a 12-team playoff. Memphis was 12-1 in 2019 and probably would have made it. Several teams made their only appearance during the past two years that would have been excluded previously: James Madison (ranked above Iowa), Miami, SMU, Tennessee, Mississippi, Tulane, Texas A&M, and Penn State. (The latter two would have made expanded play-offs in previous seasons, though, when they were ranked #5.)

Regardless, I agree it's time for Iowa to make the CFP.

Throw out James Madison, Boise State and Memphis so we are actually #11. They play trash teams all year long.
Start splitting hairs then we will have to discuss record against teams that finished ranked. God bless the west. If Iowa played in the east, they wouldn’t be on this list nearly as high.

Anybody that uses that argument doesn't know how hard it is to win in the BIG, especially on the road. Iowa's margin for Wins vs. Losses is slim.

FALLACY! Check our record against Penn State and Michigan over Kirk's tenure and exclude the period where Harbaugh was a cheating POS. The only team we would struggle with more often than not is Ohio State.

Hey we cannot help it that Jack Campbell killed Penn State's QB and single handedly wrecked their year.

And we can't help it that Hawks wrecked Iowa States best season ever and got Purdy benched in the game.
