We all want to get back to a Sweet 16 (27 years) and a Final 4 (46 years) some day.

Florida beat Houston in the 2025 Men's basketball championship (Duke & Auburn were the other Final 4 teams).

Some interesting excerpts from the March 17, 2025 linked article:

When it comes to winning the NCAA tournament, there are some predictive indicators that consistently hold true despite the uncertain nature of March Madness.

One of them? Ken Pomeroy's rankings heading into the NCAA tournament. More specifically, a combination of the KenPom offensive and defensive efficiency ratings.

Of the last 24 national champions....

  • 23 had a top-21 offense entering the tournament
  • 22 had a top-31 defense entering the tournament
In other words, only teams who stack up well on both ends truly have a shot at cutting down the nets.

Only 8 teams fit the bill for the 2025 NCAA Tournament according to this strict criteria with a few falling just short, most notably Alabama, Texas Tech, Arizona, Michigan State, and Clemson.

Alabama in particular — 4th in offense, 32nd in defense — feels like it should be shoe-horned in (seriously, does literally anyone care that a 2-seed from the best conference in the history of the sport ranks 32nd in defensive efficiency instead of 31st?).

And yet, rules are rules.

Here are the 8 teams with a real chance at winning the 2025 NCAA tournament:

IF we are locked in & don't struggle scoring at the start of the game, I think we can make things interesting with our defense, no matter who we play.
Florida is really really good. Iowa has about a .9999% of beating them. I would have said 1% but that is too much of stretch.

EDIT to include : If they can beat Clemson.

At DraftKings Sportsbook:

Duke is the favorite at +300
Michigan +360
Arizona +390
Florida +750

No other team has odds shorter than +1000.

More bets have been placed and more money wagered on Michigan to win the national title this season than any other team at DraftKings. The Wolverines, Duke and Arizona account for approximately 37% of the money bet on DraftKings' odds to win the national championship.

At FanDuel's Sportsbook: Arizona is the favorite, but the Blue Devils have the shortest odds at most sportsbooks.

Duke is the pre-tournament favorite for a second straight year. The pre-tournament favorite has won eight of the past 20 tournaments.

I do not see Virginia or UConn on that list. Not sure I'm buying what Ken's selling.

Could both make a nice run in the tournament? Absolutely.

Will either win the national championship? Not likely because neither have a top 21 offense AND a top 31 defense.

However, both coaches have won at least one natty from each school and only one other of the teams mentioned have.

Ryan Odom is in his first year at Virginia. He has taken 4 teams to the NCAA Tournament: UMBC, Utah State, VCU and Virginia. He has yet to win a national championship.

Virginia hasn't won an NCAA tourney game since their natty run in 2019.
Vols gonna take down the Cavs.
Someone has to lose. Tenn is 1-15 as a #5 Seed or worse and has lost 12 times in the 1st round. Va hasn't won an NCAA game since their title run in 2019.

Can Bennett have a tournament for the ages?

Imagine if 10 points a game Alvaro shows up!

Defense travels; will Iowa be traveling to the Sweet 16? :)
Possibly? Since 2006-07 no defending Natl Champ has made it past the round of 16 except for Uconn in 23-24. Also, since 2000, no team ranked outside of the top 12 in week 6 of that year has made the final 4.

Have to beat Clemson first.

I might be reading what you meant wrong. But Florida won in 06 & 07 and UCONN just won in 23 & 24.

Wow. That list didn't age well. Iowa beat Florida, High Point beat Wisconsin, Iowa State, Gonzaga and Houston were dismissed. Michigan beat Tennessee by 33. Auburn, at 17-16, didn't even make the tournament. And Duke . . . LOL . . . Duke couldn't hold the ball for ten seconds, so the brilliant Blue Devils were sent home. None of the actual Final Four teams are on the list: Arizona, Michigan, UConn, and Illinois. Amazing . . .

You are looking at the 2025 list of teams. Wisconsin, Tennessee, Auburn & Gonzaga didn't have a top 21 offense AND a top 31 defense this year.

When it comes to this season:

--> Duke choked and found a way last night to not make the Final Four.

--> Based on history, one of these 3 teams should be the 2026 national champion.
