I really don’t understand auburn being given any love at all
Losses to MSU & Ole Miss both the last couple of weeks of the season should knock them out.

So what. It’s still better than a sub .500 SEC or Big 10 team getting that bid. It’s not like that teams going either.

I'm totally fine with them getting in. I even had a friend who went to school there and have partied on that campus way back in the day. It's a beautiful campus and and a cool little town. By far a better Oxford than the one we all hate.
The buyout is not that much. It's $6 million if they want to move on.
Byrne inherited a gold mine and only had a baseball coach get arrested for betting and a basketball player get charged as an accomplice for murder (but not really). Clearly the gold standard, all he has to do is not sink the ship and keep the brand value from tanking.

But why is it even that much? Nobody else was offering him a job at the P4 level. Not sure there'd be many G6 teams that would hire him as head coach. Auburn's not an undesirable job. Definitely a bad time to be in a coach search, but I think you either get him dirt cheap or you just go to market. There are better candidates to roll the dice on for $6M.
I don't have a huge problem with them getting in over a mediocre SEC or Big 10 team, but to me if you can't find a way to schedule a single Quad 1, that should be disqualifying for an at large bid unless there are extenuating circumstances like you scheduled a blue blood that was inexplicably bad or you schedule a half dozen P4 teams and it just so happened that none of them had a decent year.
But if you look at their schedule, I have no clue who they thought was going to even be decent. Air Force? They basically didn't try to compete for an at large bid.
