Why it took so long to name Norvell, already on staff as an analyst, the new RB coach is interesting. If he was the guy, why wait a month to announce it? Did they go after several other people and get turned down, so they finally had to go with Norvell? He's never coached RBs, and he's not experienced with the Shanahan offense either, as far as I can tell. At age 62 he has a long coaching resume and, of course, solid ties to the Iowa program. In any event, Iowa finally has its new RB coach. We'll see how that turns out.

The entitlement of people that feel they need to know all the inner-workings of the hiring process is nauseating. It's very likely this has been a done deal for quite some time, right or wrong. The process takes as long as it takes. Get over yourselves.

You're hilarious. It's a public university. Fans pay for everything, one way or another. "The process takes as long as it takes." How long did your process take to come up with that one? None of my business, of course, just curious.

Norvell has never coached RBs. He was hired as an analyst. And then a month or so after the RB coach resigns, we get the news that Norvell will take over the job. Other names were mentioned as possibilities, including people who have worked with Lester, people who have coached RBs, people who have actually played RB, and people who know the Shanahan offense. Norvell is none of those things.

So the process, from way out here, looks a little weird, if you don't mind my saying so. And if you do mind, all I can say is this: Get over yourself, dude.

There are a large number of asst coaches under Kirk who coached a position they didnt play. Norvell knows how to run, swivel his hips and makes cuts, and all the running backs know how to do it and take a handoff. The team has had a set number of spring and August camp drills over the years for the running backs to work through so Norvell will use those.

And maybe they did try to hire one or two other guys that turned down Iowa. If the OLine is really good again then we have four known really good RBs to blast through the holes, Norvell or another coach

I think we can feel plenty confident in the people KF brings to his staff

Kirk never played o line but he was a good line coach from what I hear.
Reese Morgan never coached or played the o line or d line and was a good coach from what I remember

As far as how long it took to announce the hiring, aren’t they required to wait a certain amount of time from when the job was posted before they can announce who accepted it?

Former LB Kirk Ferentz is probably one of the best OL coaches is college football history.
I understand coaches don’t always end up with the position group they themselves used to be in as players. That being said - I feel it is the best path to take and how I would go about my staff if I were in coaching.

I mean, why would you not aim to have a former WR be teaching WRs…A former RB with the RBs…A former QB leading the QBs…etc etc etc.

"Remember, if you question your favorite collegiate sport team's coaching staff, you are EVILLLLLLLLL"

With all the basketball stuff going on, this news kind of got lost in the sauce for me. Always happy to see a former Hawk return to Iowa City, especially as a coach. I've got faith in Norvell. In hindsight, the last RB coach hire was pretty mediocre. Hoping Norvell stays a lot longer. He's got a great room to work with too.

And where would you have obtained a shred of information to determine Young was mediocre?

You do realize he's now back coaching RB's in the NFL, right?
