If you really cared about the sport itself and were a real fan of it, you’d want the rankings to be honest. You’re obviously not.
I’m a State fan first, by a long way, before being a fan of, “the sport.” You think other fanbases care about “fairness” and “sportsmanship.” You think if we and OM or USM finished with similar records, but we beat them head to head, they say State deserves to be ranked ahead of us? Hell no!

Are you Bracky Brett or Larry Templeton? You want us to follow the rules when absolutely no one else is?

Just think how funny it will be if their 40-million-dollar football team falls.

That’s just a polite way of saying “we weren’t at our best, so the loss doesn’t really count.” Every team has off days, travel issues, midweek arms, whatever. Southern Miss still had to execute, they still had to win the game, and they did. Just like they beat Ole Miss yesterday. You don’t get to asterisk the L because you were “not sharp.” That’s what the game is- who wins when both teams show up that day. Polls are supposed to reflect today, right now, not “what if we weren’t tired.” If polls are resume-based as D1Baseball claims, Southern Miss should be ahead right now. Not in April, not after SEC play- just right now, based on the games played. How can you not agree with thís?
But they don't claim this, do they? At least at this point in the season. And what you are claiming doesn't make sense either. The only thing that tells you whether a win is good at this point is the polls. So they are making a projection of who they think is good. They're not doing major shuffles based on early season losses. I'd prefer there be tons of early season moves in the polls (more so for football than baseball, but I'd be good if all of them took the position that you basically know nothing about the teams early in the year, and you need to make major updates based on games played). But for the approach they are saying they take, it looks more or less reasonable. I think they are a little extreme in not counting these early season losses, but baseball is not like football or basketball where it's mostly pretty clear early on who has talent. Figuring out that somebody that looks like a starting pitcher ace in practice doesn't have it between the ears can easily cost you three games. I suspect over time, their approach of assuming teams like LSU and Arkansas will figure it out and be good has turned out to be pretty accurate.

If it’s truly a “combination of resume to date and how good we think they are,” then Southern Miss deserves more credit right now than No. 7. They have the literal win, the #1 non con SOS nationally, 4-0 conference record. That’s not just “resume to date”- that’s a really strong current resume to date plus a team that looks legitimately good. A little projection is understandable-
I agree. It's crazy to not have them in the top 10 at this point.

but when the resume and the eye test both lean toward Southern Miss being ahead right now, keeping them at #7 while we stay #3 feels like the projection part is outweighing the actual results a bit too much. But like I said, I think SEC bias is baked in too.
Oh, they are in the top ten. And you are wigging out because you think they may be as many as 6 spots too low as of March 11th. Perfectly reasonable on your part. I mean damn. It's not like there are going to be months of data to help dial in the rankings. There is definitely enough data to know right now who the top 6 teams in the nation are.

You don’t actually care about college baseball being fair, accurate, or even logical. They’re mean to you, so you should be mean back. Fairness is for suckers. Rules are for losers. If you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying. You are the Ric Flair of baseball fans. Woooo!

The vibe I’ve gotten listening podcasts from the D1 crew is they think USM is overachieving a little right now. Which I get on some level. Very good pitching staff and a veteran team, offense not all that impressive though.
I think they're probably right about that. I think USM could host a regional, but I don't see them as a CWS team at all.

100%, I care about State. If we aren't playing I'm not watching.

I'll give you this, you'd fight right in, in the compliance division of our AD.

Even though USM’s RPI will be good at year end, RPI and SOS in early March means absolutely nothing. For context, 5 loss Missouri State, who got swept in Oxford, currently has a Top 10 RPI.
Early season truly is rpi bizarro world

Thís doesn’t look to be true. They are not listed in the top 20 of any reputable RPI source. What are you looking at?

Again, thís also doesn’t look to be true. What source are you referring too?

Maybe this. Columbia still at 19th (with #1 SOS) and Mo State drops 7 spots from 10th to 17th after losing to SEMO tonight...

Eh, its 1 game. We're not expected to go undefeated & they are top 10. If we played a 3 game series & lost 2 of 3 they would be ranked ahead of us. Its early & we have another game with them. Win that its a moot point, but we lose they will move ahead of us.

19th and 17th, yes ok I missed that. SOS is 50% of the formula.

I dnk if &tate is #3 in the nation. But &tate is #3 in Mississippi so far.

USM 3-0 in the sec with 1 rpi
Ole Miss 1-0 in the sec with 14 rpi
&tate . 0-1 16 rpi

If we are using RPI as a rationale for why teams are better than other teams on March 14th, I don’t think we can have a rational conversation about this.

Go look at the Top 20 of the RPI and tell me with a straight face that UAB and Missouri State are legitimate Top 20 teams.

Hmmm, why didn't you post USM 's Sun Belt record after their road game in the state of Arkansas?

Some of y'all are truly silly with your deep "analysis". It's obvious we're much better than the last two seasons, and those teams were good enough to finish 2nd in regionals.

This team will be a host barring serious injury issues or an unprecedented bad coaching job from a HOF coach.

Now let's move on to pulling for a Top 8 seed kind of season, because that's the question.

I'm not doing any deep analysis. As matter of fact my analysis is on the surface. State isn't winning games against good competition. Well one game, Az St was a decent win.

Also I'm not sure State would win at Ark st either. They've beat USM and Arkansas. State lost to both.

My thoughts are state isn't the 3 team in the nation. State will end up with 14-17 secs wins and will be on the fringe of hosting a regional. Mostly like on the road.

We haven’t beaten anyone that is currently in the top 25. We’ve only beaten a couple of mid tier teams and played several trash teams. The best teams we’ve played- UCLA, Southern Miss, Arkansas- we’ve lost to all of them.

So far-
$4.2M deficit + over $3M NIL…

…to go .833 against the Sun Belt and mid-majors, while getting beat by the 3 best teams we’ve played.

Hopefully we’re as good as we were expected to be by the end of the year.
