There are a handful on the Penn State message board that hate me for saying this, but when you adjust 1983 Iowa's score for the change in advancement points (hurts), placement points and bonus points (helps), they total 177.5 to 2025 PSU's 177.

Just using a lacing and Advancement points of today gets Iowa to 182.5.
Without any bonus points each of the 9 finalists would have 16 placement points and 3 advancement points.
The 9 finalists without bonus would have 171 alone.
Rico placed 4th and made the semifinals giving him 9 placement and 2.5 advancement points for 11.5 total.

They scored 7.5 bonus points alone in the finals, raising the total to 190 with at least 20 other wins to secure more bonus.

I can’t find the bracket, am only going by memory but using today’s scoring they would have close to 215 points.

Is it fair to say the early rounds were a bit watered down? More power to them, wrestling D1, but wrestlers who started at the examples above are at Wartburg and Millersville in today's format.

This graph is NCAA tournament placings, not B1G. I think there was some confusion among some, because the thread was originally about B1G tournament, and people were thinking you were downplaying the 200 points from that. Also, technically there is still a pigtail match, but no one in it is ever likely to win the tournament. Although, with recent seeding craziness, I could see someone good enough ending up in the wrestle-in match.

Touche, I meant to reply to the response referring to NCAAs. Edinboro and Clarion have had Champs in the past, and I am sure PSU drew them in the early rounds over the last 15 years, we can cherry pick either way. My point was more to having more teams, conferences and starters at said schools 40 years ago would be D2 today (with a few exceptions).

Gosh if you go back far enough, PSU's first championship in 1953, OSU had 3 wrestlers in the tournament. That championship was 19 years before Iowa's first. Both are definitely true. In 1983, the B1G truly was the Big 10 and was just starting to gain the dominance that it has now. The Big 8 (five teams) was starting to lose the dominance it held through much of the '60s and '70s. That was a record I thought would never be matched (9 Champs, 2 matches lost) in the B1G, but PSU might end up doing it. This year was closer than I thought I'd ever see. 1983 was the first Big 10 tournament I ever attended. Now I've attended around 40 (too lazy to figure out exactly).

While never a national championship team, Syracuse had many outstanding wrestlers including Mean Gene Mills and AFL football great, Jim Nance.
