When does our Blue Blood status come into question?

OP your question is one I’ve thought very deeply about. It’s actually why I hate the “bump this thread when Indiana sucks”. I’ll give the TLDR on this:

I don’t believe you lose blueblood status. Those who argue you can should consider that, if you can lose it, we may have lost it already to some degree.
If you can't lose it then why aren't CCNY, NYUand other 40s powerhouses still bluebloods?

Because they weren’t bluebloods to begin with. Comparing CCNY appropriately would be Florida. Have a few dominant years and then gone from relevance forever. NC state is closer to a blueblood than CCNY and still isn’t close. Same concept would apply to San Francisco or Oklahoma A&M.

I’d say prepare yourself to see articles and discussion on it over the summer. It’s sadly coming, especially if we have a coach who can’t recruit anyone worth their salt to play at UK next season.

A lot of yall clearly don’t understand what being a blue blood is. You don’t lose it due to a tough 10 year stretch. We’ve really only been down for 6 years. We are still the definition of a blue blood. Pope will probably be gone sooner rather than later and the ship will be righted. Good lord yall act like we haven’t been good for 30 years.

Program fell off the deep end years ago. Nothing positive going on. Terrible leadership. Fan apathy. Yea we have history on our side for the moment.

seeing the fans arent going to do anything about it like simply line up by the thousands to force change…. When do we accept we aren’t a blue blood?

we don’t belong in the same category as Duke UNC Kansas UConn at the moment.

even if we have a similar record this year. Even if we beat Duke last year. Even if Peterson is sitting for Kansas. The bigger picture is scary. Those programs clearly aren’t in bad shape like us.

We used to be the best. We currently aren’t a blue blood. Bama football wouldn’t put up with this. Hell about 7-8 other schools wouldn’t put up with this. And we are the greatest tradition in college basketball??

well to any of the teams from the past that brought winning and good memories I have to say thanks. Fans that cared enough to force change thanks. Tradition and history is all we have to hang our hat on.

There’s no talks of what are we going to do. Just Pope is going to be here next year Because well that’s the new Kentucky way. We let Mitch tell us when he’s leaving. We sit back and take it.

so the purpose of the thread is….. where tf do we meet up and stop this crap? I need a time and location and I’ll see yall there.
Kentucky isn’t even close to losing a blue blood status. It would take decades of irrelevance to do that. Kentucky is rarely in jeopardy of even missing tournament. Indiana hasn’t been past the sweet 16 but once in like 30+ years. They miss the tournament routinely. Kentucky just had an elite 8 6 years ago, a sweet 16 last year, no tournament misses except covid, and we’re still at one point second in the SEC even this year. Beat Duke last year, beat Florida the champs last year on and on.

Kentucky is the greatest program of all time. Slipping and not being elite for a time is not losing blue blood status. You cannot be elite in every single decade year after year. I just got some explaining this in another thread. Even today, right now, nobody in history has won to the level of UK. We average an elite 8 nearly HALF OF THE TIME. It’s a staggering statistic. Kentucky would have to absolutely go to trash worse than we are right now this season for 20+ years before it even becomes a conversation. And we won’t, because we can’t. The next hire will shoot it right back up. Kentucky has no chance of losing blue blood status. None of the big 4 do, none of them.

Florida is more of a blue blood at this point. They have had a lot more recent success over the last 20-25 years.

UK will always have history but it is exactly that “history”. College athletics is much different now.
😭😭😭Florida is not a blue blood. And Florida basketball goes down and might not ever recover. They just got a lucky hire. In the mid 2’000’s the got really lucky and it was the last time the top pick in the draft turned down his pick. You’ll never see something like that. Florida might not ever see another championship over 100 years, it’s still not a destination program. It’s a football school who’s had a lot of lucky breaks in basketball for 20 years. It’s happened before, I highly doubt that continues at this clip. Golden just turned out. The next 5 might not even be close. No great coach is going to look at Florida as a destination. It’ll be really hard for Florida to sustain what they have over the last 2 decades.

Kentucky will solely focus on basketball. Florida won’t. Kentucky is the premier blue blood, Florida isn’t. Over time it plays out. You only don’t understand this because you’re obviously doing cherry picking cut off dates and therefore you’ll miss what is likely going to happen over long periods of time. We saw these comments at the end of tubby / Gillispie. What happened? We immediately hit stride and dominated. It’ll be the same this this time and Florida will lose Golden and have some bad hires. Don’t kid yourself, but I realize you’ll shroud yourselves in a few decades instead of looking at 100 years of basketball and how it turns out over time. My God, Kentucky has absolutely DONINATED Florida for the last 15 inside of your best decade sir , lol. We’ve owned you and that’s your golden years. lol. A blue blood doesn’t get the living F beat out of them like Kentucky has beat Florida. Aren’t we like 11-2 at your own house the last 13? Just since 2015, you’ve beaten Kentucky 3 times now in Gainesville. And that’s your big cherry picked window lol. Since y’all just won your first in Gainesville since 2019 lol. Yea man big blue blood! 🤣 Kentucky absolutely OWNS Florida in every statistical measure including owning you badly at your own house. Not to mention ALL OTHER statistical categories. Florida doesn’t even rank. Stfu with that dumb sht.

Didn’t UF already have a somewhat brief downturn after Donovan and now has since recovered again with Golden? Even during the Mike White era UF wasn’t terrible.

Because of Donovan UF started putting much more resources into basketball proving they could be an elite program in a state that hasn’t done well in college basketball. Now Golden is just doing it again. Sure there may be down times but UF has now dedicated a lot of resources into its men’s basketball program now. That isn’t changing.

The fact still remains that UF has 3 national titles over like the last 20-25 years. Not many other schools can say that.

No they didn’t win three since 2000. Let’s ignore what’s happening and go off the past. That works every time.

So what. Basketball didn’t start 20 years ago. Florida has had some tournament luck in the last 20, you’re aren’t close to a blue blood. This isn’t the first time that has happened. Florida will never sustain that. Kentucky owns Florida in every statistical category. You just beat Kentucky for the first time AT HOUR OWN HOUSE since 2019. Were like 11-2 even in Gainesville over the last 13. We own Florida in every single measure, front to back. Florida barely ranks historically it’s just due to a few tournaments that they even do. Florida does not sustain success at get long periods and they won’t. Even mentioning Florida in the same breath as Kentucky is absurd. Kentucky usually hits decades where we go on huge runs. The game didn’t start 20 years ago sir, and it’s not ending after Florida wins 1. This isn’t a 20 year thing. Kentucky could probably take your coach right now if we really wanted him. I don’t think it would be hard at all. Florida is not a destination. Donovan would have been back at UK had he not wanted the NBA. Golden is the same.

Florida is a good program for what they’ve been able to do. But it’s just a hit and miss program, their football is similar. Florida sports take a backseat in that state to a lot of things. But the point is, Florida will not sustain in longevity, Kentucky will. You’re making the mistake of recency bias, you are not a blue blood and probably will never be. You don’t have the history and probably not the future. Florida has caught some really lucky breaks like the top pick turning down the NBA, straight lightening in a bottle with 1 team winning 2. I doubt Florida wins a title this year, they’re not going to. I really highly doubt it. You have to do this for a long time to be considered a blue blood. We’ve heard this all before and then bam, Kentucky does what they do. You thinking Florida is now the premier place and a blue blood is hilarious to me. Golden just turned out to be a good one, really lucky break. I don’t believe Florida will be able to pull those hires out of their *** all throughout the future. Again it’s not a destination job, you will have to find coaches who turn into something to win, no coach with a pedigree is going to leave their programs for Florida. Notice, it’s never happened? Both young coaches with a resume is what you have. Try sustaining that.

Correct. The past is the past. History is just that. College sports has changed dramatically. I mean Indiana winning a National Championship in football just proved that.

I don’t think counting on ancient history is going to help you much in today’s era of college sports so I don’t think you can just rely on the “logo” anymore. There is more parity now more than ever.

I agree with that. We definitely need to make changes soon and get back on track but I think everyone needs to come back off the ledge. This talk of Florida and UConn passing us is completely ridiculous. Being a blue blood is about sustained historical success, which we have had in spades going back damn near 100 years. Florida and UConn have had a few flashes of being good since the 90’s lol.

Let me say this:

Duke has an AD that wants Duke to be the best college basketball program in the country.

Kansas has an AD that wants Kansas to be the best college basketball program in the country.

North Carolina's AD is starting to wake up and is focusing on North Carolina trying to be the best college basketball program in the country.

Mitch Barnhardt wanted Kentucky to have a clean and competitive athletic department.

If we want to maintain long term blue blood status then the new AD needs to take a particular interest in the basketball program.

My thing is yea it’s awesome to have the history of being a blue blood. I’m proud to say we have 8 national championships. It’s a bragging right. It’s cool to say we have all time wins.
What’s not cool is taking your family to a game and witnessing Kentucky get blown off the court by 35.

what’s not cool is losing close to 15 games a year. What’s not cool is the current situation. Yall say we went to the sweet sixteen last year like that was an accomplishment. Our own coach mentioned we had the most money in college basketball. And this is the product?

Yall say Billy G wouldn’t have gotten fired for his two bad seasons if not for his drinking. I have no clue. To me what Pope has done is a fireable offense at a blue blood. We are a blue blood right? Yes Ik we are and I hope we stay that way.

Let’s just have blue blood standards and quit slowly allowing mediocrity to be the norm. It’s a complete failure to me. We should be going crazy. We should be jumping off the ledge. Not backing away from it. We should be raising hell. Making Pope want to quit. Not because we are miserable and hate Pope. We’re just a blue blood school that loves basketball right?

I hate this Pope era. I’m not a pope basher. I’m a UK fan. Honestly 2012 is the only championship I witnessed but I fully understand the history of UK ball and know tons of players from every era and the background behind a lot of seasons. Pretty knowledgeable about UK ball when it’s all said and done.

Come off as a troll sometimes but in reality I just want UK ball to be the best. Not best of the past. 2012 best. And all the other 7. Championships are the standard period. Pope said it. We hang banners. Is he meeting his own expectations?

I’m with you brother. What’s going on right now is unacceptable. Hopefully we hire a competent AD and he fires Pope after next year and aggressively goes after a winner.

It was. Not because it was the S16 — but because of the situation.

No. I don’t think any Kentucky fan thinks he is. What we disagree on is all the other stuff, such as the “why”?
The only situation was we hired Pope. And we all knew he was the wrong guy so we make up all these fake things he had to go up against. In reality he just isn’t the coach we needed.

What was the situation? Hes the new coach at Kentucky with an empty roster. He gets to recruit from the school with the most money and the best tradition. What exactly was the situation?

he came in late? If he had another month to do things he would have ended up the same way. He has every advantage in the book and still can’t make any real excitement. The man is hanging on to the Duke win. He loses that game last year and everyone is really after him.

Ive even said the same thing about sweet sixteen was good for the situation but when i really think about it the only situation we are in is we hired the wrong guy and 100% know it. We are making excuses for being average. Sweet sixteen is never a good season for Kentucky idc the situation. Give Pearl the job like I’ve heard boosters wanted and I bet he has more success given the same situation.

I’ll say it again. Cal losing in the first round doesn’t make gettin punked by Tennessee in the sweet sixteen a successful season given any situation at UK.

he came in late?

I’m not here to tell you why it should be successful to you. That’s your mind and your right. But most of the fanbase isn’t going to see that the same way. The people on here — sure, you’ll get a lot of agreement because we tend to be the most ravenous and hardcore, while being a large contingent of criminally online fans. And that applies to me as well. A S16 is an average year by Kentucky standards, but doing it with the roster situation and timing matters to most reasonable people. You don’t have to denigrate Pope for year one to make the case he hasn’t been good enough anyway.

I’m extremely reasonable. I didn’t jump on Popes case last year. I didn’t get mad at the end result. I took into consideration the “situation” and even gave Pope a chance. Had nothing bad to say about him. Got pumped up over the summer and had tickets ordered 7 months ahead of time the day they came out. I guess I lied in my previous post because even with the disappointment of getting punked by Tennessee I still had excitement for this season… which was the reason I got tickets.

This year he has went the opposite direction. Gotten embarrassed more times in one season than I can remember my entire life. I just get confused about the conversation being he’s here year three no matter what.

Fans don’t say that because they think he deserves it. They say it because they know nothing will be done and he won’t get fired. I believe any other blue blood would raise hell over this kind of stuff and the administration would be forced to do something.

I get it. All I’m doing is talking like the rest of yall but if we change the conversations then maybe they will change the way they operate. Instead of “Popes here next year no matter what because Mitch and the president” raise hell. Quit being so worried about being called Kentucky hicks and take pride in it… we’re the bluest of blue according to most of yall.

have standards if that’s what we are. Act like we are what we say we are. Fanbase is being just as big a cuck as Mark Pope.

Then, you agree it was good given the situation last year. Seems this bad year has caused you to reconsider the prior year, not sure that’s the play

Tennessee loss sucked. No argument there.

This year has been bad. I think there a lot of reasons for it and many of them lie with Pope.

Don’t get confused about year three no matter what…there’s nothing confusing about it. We, as fans, didn’t decide he gets a third year. The boosters and athletic department determine that, not us.
Fans don’t say that because they think he deserves it.
Find me someone who is going on record that he “deserves” a year three other than one or two people. We disagree that fans largely are saying that. I think more fans want a year 3 to see if he “deserves” to even be the coach at all. Most everyone is in agreement this year has been awful

I don’t agree with this either. I don’t think they care unless top brass boosters want change and demand it now. That’s what matters IMO.

Not sure what this part has to do with the rest. We are a blue blood so we want to win. Obviously.

This part of your post is unnecessary and insulting. Fans are just people who like the same team as you and they aren’t the reason we are losing. You and I have more in common, even if we disagree about whether or not Pope should be fired right this second, than 99% of people. These kind of comments kind of forget that we are a niche within a niche.

Well can’t not respect the breakdown you did. And I’m not acting like I’m a better fan than anyone when I say disrespect things. I include myself as part of the fanbase.

I do think we could force change but ik that’s just an opinion. I do believe if the same amount of fans showed up to protest as were at popes pep rally that they would be heard and Pope would probably want to leave right? You think Mitch and the president would want UK to be front page espn for that kind of thing?

i get the chances of fans doing that are slim to none. That’s why I guess all this stuff about being a blue blood doesn’t really help you with what’s happening now. Even being a blue blood we are what we are today. Let’s be a blue blood in the 2000s also. Not just the 1900s.

I don’t think fans could affect change outside of stop buying tickets, stop supporting financially, stop watching etc. And even then, just because we want change doesn’t always mean we get the change we want. I’m just going to keep hoping for the best and be a part of this fanbase, try to be the best version of fan I can be. That’s all I feel I really can do. I’m not rich, probably won’t be anytime soon, so I’ll be thankful that others who are pay for us to even have a basketball program that can compete $ for $ with others. Hope we return to glory so that I don’t die before we pass UCLA in titles. And I thank God for passionate fans like you, man. And Morg. And many others I don’t agree with.

Respect . Even if you disagree you seem to understand where I’m coming from. And of course when all you can do is read words and not hear the tone someone would say them or their expressions things can get taken completely wrong but that’s why i can discuss Uk with someone all day with different opinions as long as it’s not your a dumb a ss with the first disagreement.

we all have different opinions about what should or shouldn’t happen but if we are all UK fans we should all have one common goal at the end of the day.

I still think 30,000 UK fans with literall pitchforks brings some change tho lol. Like that I’m only joking. Kind of serious but that’s just my opinion. Everyone knows their limits. That goes for UKs administration also imo.
