I'm afraid this is what you are going. to start seeing in the "paying players" era.

No school pride. No loyalty. Just make sure the check clears and go through the motions.
How long are NIL contributors going to be cool with this? That's not a rhetorical question - I don't exactly understand why folks engage with NIL in the first place, so I don't really have an idea of what would make a critical mass of them (both large and small donors) cease giving.

Oh, I don't think there's any "going to start seeing" about it. It's here

Say what you want about the old NCAA rules that apparently restricted human rights as our legal warriors like to continuously remind us, but those same rules protected young athletes from themselves and meddling family members more times than anyone wants to admit today. Lots of guys stuck it out and managed to fall in love with the university along the way. Unfortunately, that bond(at least for football/basketball) will now be much more of an exception than a norm

Yet there are a ton of teams with players who do care and dont just go through the motions.
Are you saying this is what to expect specifically at MSU?

No idea.

I do know that fandom of college sports has always revolved around a shared experience. I went to Mississippi State, ate at Flo and Eddies, snuck into Rice Hall - so I cheer for players who also went to State. Transferring every year for the biggest bag or more playing time just doesn't make sense for college sports in the long run. We're not the only one facing this issue, but our basketball teams are both basically "do what it takes to keep the star and build around them in the portal."

Its not just going to be MSU. But if a team isn't a favorite to compete for a national championship by halfway through an average season, players are going to quit. I actually think South Carolina has it worse than us - but we are in the bottom quartile of the SEC.

I don't know that I have ever felt worse about being a MSU fan in my life. I'm proud of the degree I have from 1996, but that's about it. Can anyone help?

but I think both our Men's AND Women's basketball teams have actually put this into practice. Both teams have just totally collapsed at the end of the year. Just make it all end.
That was a tough watch, no idea what happened to the team that beat TN, KY and GA. Kinda shocked they spent the whole game talking about us needing this game as we were the last 4 in. Say what?! Must have missed that and thought we were just playing it out.
I did chuckle when they said it was the largest margin of victory for FL ever in the SEC tourney. Well of course it was.
We're not just playing it out in both M&W but going out in a blaze of glory. Disappointing to say the least.

Women's basketball outside 6 teams is horrible.

Quilting…
I think you heard wrong, they’re actually “Quilting”, not quitting. It’s gotten very popular. I hear Ballard makes some really cute designs. But it tears his fingers up, hence why he can’t catch a pass.

One reason most employers don’t pay in advance.
Yea, but we basically do that with coaches. Most of them have guaranteed salaries no matter how their team performs. Some have additional bonuses they can collect with team accomplishments, but I've often wondered why the bulk of a college coach's salary is not based on their team's performance? My word at the millions of dollars we have paid out to coaches recently when their teams aren't even competitive enough in the SEC to enjoy going to watch them play.

I have often felt that Lebby has just been going thru the process with knowledge that our administration would not fire him while collecting more money than he ever dreamed of. If when he does get fired with millions in his pocket he will just go back to Texas/Oklahoma and get a smaller school coaching or assistant gig.

In fairness, the men's team collapsed a long time ago.

When contracts are year to year if not day to day, then next year’s payday is dependent on not getting hurt. Shut it down and make sure next year’s check will clear.

Don’t get emotionally attached. Did it a long time ago and I feel way better now. I still support the teams and the school but I don’t get too up about highs and or too low about the lows and I don’t get “embarrassed”.

I think he’s trying. He’s just in over his head.

Honestly, only good thing I can say about this year's basketball team is they let us all know they sucked real early. I probably haven't watched more than a half hour of them all season combined.
False:

The good thing about this season is that it is over.

This is not a new phenomenon. Teams have been doing it for as long as I can remember. It has very little to do with school pride and more to do with talent and competitiveness.

I don’t think it has much to do with being paid or “team pride”. They just aren’t good. They’re a horrible team defensively and have been all year.

That may be true but I wonder why they would quit if they have a desire to move to another school? I would be trying as hard as I could to be noticed so I could move and make even more money.

Rick Ray killed my college basketball fandom. I just don't care about it anymore. I'm squarely in the camp that says when you're a small budget school like Mississippi State (compared to the rest of the SEC) you can't be good at all sports or very many sports. We've already decided that we're going to fund baseball at an elite level and football is vital to the health of SEC schools, so we should just focus on those two sports and let the other sports languish.

Because you have ambition.

I have employees that go above and beyond and I have some that do the minimum.

I think this is the way.

Go all in on baseball and try to be middle of the pack SEC in football.
