Pope says his first half rotation was really good.

Is Pope delusional? He can’t be this oblivious right? He has to know this crap isn’t good enough for Kentucky.
He absolutely knows this isn't good enough. He likely thought the UK brand would bolster his recruiting ability - meaning he could show up to the houses of recruits, blow bubbles, eat ice cream and expect them to commit on the spot.

Well, now here we are.

People laugh, but I’ve been saying it looks like self sabotage all around. He can grab 25 million here and roll out quick. Makes no sense the way he recruits coaches or anything else. Unless you do it on purpose.
Popes trying his best, I mean I understand the criticisms but let’s be fair about it. Poor guys just struggling, and it’s sad. This is a hard job and even though he played here… coaching here is a lot more pressure and a totally different animal. He wasn’t ready for this job and Mitch should have known better than to hire an unproven coach like this. He’s been here long enough to know better. At least Duke and UNC had their hall of fame coaches groom their replacements to take over and even help them after they retired. Pope didn’t have that luxury. Mitch has destroyed the basketball program…again.

He took BG out when that was his best stretch of the season then didn’t call a time out before the run was out of hand in the 1st half. He’s still making the same mistakes coaching he did last year & I’m sorry, this is not the place to learn on the job. Again, absolutely zero press offense other than holding your hand in the air hoping to out jump the defender. This is college basketball & not a middle school aau group, just unacceptable game preparation.

I really don’t understand the goal of the hockey style line changes he’s so fond of. It’s hard regardless to be a legit 8-10 deep, but it could at least be somewhat justifiable if we were playing an 8 seconds or less kind of offense and/or a super aggressive defense to try and wear other teams down with waves of fresh legs. We’re passive on defense and methodical on offense right now, so I simply don’t get it. It’s almost like he’s trying to mimic the deep rotation of the 96 team for its own sake without really understanding why that was an effective strategy for that team.

Four minutes into the game and he had 3 subs in already. I just do not understand this mans basketball mind. Throw the stupid analytics out the window and coach what the current circumstances calls for. You don't have to sub because numbers tell you that you have to. Players barely break the sweat before he is taking them out.

He talks in hyperbole and riddles a lot, it's kinda cute when the wins are happening and quite annoying when they aren't.
I mean I understand what he's doing but it's annoying when the season has been this rough. I don't think that his sunshine pumper attitude fits at the absolute mecca of CBB, gotta be ruthless in this place can't paint a picture of constant rainbows and butterflies when it's a disaster it gets old super quickly.

I heard coach tell the players to guard their yard during the vandy game. Now quoting Dykes, this cannot be good.
This is pretty funny either way, but did this actually happen? I’d actually believe that this cornball would do something like that lol

That’s why he can’t recruit.
I was about to post the same thing until I read your comment. Pope isn’t relatable at all. You can tell even in games when he’s saying something the players (especially Oweh) all act like it’s the dumbest thing they’ve ever heard.

He has these corny sayings and overly positive message no matter what happens. It’s almost like it’s a fake persona.

His first half rotation caused the collapse. He even had opportunities to quickly reverse his sub pattern before things got out of hand and he didn't.
And yet stated in his postgame comments that his first substitution rotation was productive. As was stated UK is not for a unproven coach just because he played here. What a total copout by Mitch. A little parting shot by Mitch before he transitions to his new cushy job for $1 mill a year.

You can’t do that when most of your starting lineup has two fouls
Sure you can. Play them with two. Why? Because Moreno finished with four fouls and he was the only starter that finished with more than three. Coaches that sit players with two fouls in the first half regardless of the game situation are just dumb. So may times that player will finish with three fouls and could’ve been playing the entire time.

That right there shows how over his head he is. If he says that out loud then privately he won’t ever consider changing. It’s probably why we can’t play a lick of defense. He can’t teach it and they things he does wrong he won’t change.

Even when we win, Pope's pressers generally suck.

He's not a good communicator.
During timeout camera followed Pope in huddle.

Pope was communicating over the heads of the players and they were looking at him like wtf are you talking about.

To say differently, it was as if Pope was talking to a fellow experience coach, versed in high level basketball theory and strategy. These players were lost in his communication and couldn’t understand anything he was intending to communicate.

These players need tactical direction and specific actions to follow on the court NOT conceptual strategy that Pope communicates.

Pope can’t communicate in a way that is relevant to his players. And that ability to effectively communicate to the level of your audience is leadership step 1.

It was alarming and telling.

I think he is trying as hard as possible , he loves UK , but he's not the man for the job . Its one thing , understanding the mission,. its a harder thing to accomplish the mission.

Look on the bright side… Pope’s epic failure is probably what caused Mitch to announce retirement, so it’s not on his legacy to fire a former player and Captain of the greatest college basketball team in the modern era, who he hired ill advised.

Any double-digit-loss season is unacceptable at Kentucky, injuries aside. Let's just get that squared away. I think Pope supporters need to set that aside and just ask themselves if the team we currently have should lose in the fashion they do?

It's not like injuries have relegated Pope to playing walk-ons. A case can be made that injuries have helped him trim down his rotation, and yet he persists on playing the new 9th, 10th, and 11th guys. If the injuries hadn't occurred would he be playing 13-15 guys?

One reason he subs so much is the guys are not in shape.

Seems they should be conserving energy on the defensive side.

Most teams get better as the season progresses. Pope’s teams don’t.

Instead he just puts 6 guts out there and hopes no one notices.

Pope isn't it. He's just not and anyone with a brain would have known he wasn't a good hire when they made it.

I don't think the new AD is going to come in and fire Pope on Day 1, so we are stuck with this lemon of a staff for another year.
