Finally! Although I’m unfortunately 100% sure that Mitch will get to pick his replacement and it’ll be someone under him.

We should do what any good company would do and conduct a nationwide search and have a committee decide.
It's gonna be Marc Hill. Mitch was here for so long, that he sat up a good ole boy network.

we should be so lucky, the lack of knowledge about the AD role on this board or Mitch's actually success is astounding- yea yea I know... Billy, Pope, cant hire, no NIL, blah blah...
His stupid contracts are enough for me to say he doesn't have clue. Cal's lifetime contract, Stoops buyout, the VERY long JMI contract for NIL when we don't even know how it will work, and even giving Pope contract extensions for a Sweet 16 (completely unnecessary because there's no chance Pope would take another job at any point in his contract).

-Calipari lifetime contract
-Stoop's contract
-Swim team scandal
-Joker Phillips
-BCG
-Mark Pope
-JMI
-Dragging feet when NIL first started
-Destroying our logos and uniforms/brand, not just for basketball, either.

I mean hey, the rifle team was good, and Volleyball got a title. And IIRC, women's basketball was pretty good, I guess.
Hey man do you- we can agree to disagree, that is allowed

I wasn't a fan of Barnhart's perspective on what role each program plays on the macro level. Some of his hires didn't work out as expected. However, the man was beaten to death with personal attacks for decades and that was undeserved. That said, I'll be happy to see another person step up to lead UK athletics forward. Mitch signs out one final time with his most famous words, that shall be remembers henceforth: ENOUGH!

Also, don’t forget Mitch will still be around for 24 months as an assistant to the president. He’s gotta collect his final $1.6mil parting gift!

Anyone who thinks Mitch won’t select his replacement is crazy.

He retired from making intelligent, creative, and productive decisions about 12 years ago.

All he's doing now is physically getting out of the way. Not that I won't take it. Good riddance. He's set the program back a couple decades with his weak, cowardly and uncreative thinking.

And the cheerleaders/coaches on the lake.

No way. Some of his hires and their contracts have been out of this world bad. We need someone that is willing to adapt to the new college landscape. Not some good ol boy in waiting.
With all do respect, what you are really sayig is get someone in hear that can adapt to the new NON COLLEGE landscape. Mitch will only be reviled for it and never get credit for being one of the last to try to stand up and fight for COLLEGE athletics remaining in at least some form COLLGE athletics.

When people rail on and on about how Mitch was a goody two shoes has been that was standing in the way of progress, its both funny and tragic to watch because at the same time they are rooting on the end of the sport itself and just dont realize it. They're rooting for a new culture that with each year will have less and less to do the University they claim pride in. They'll just be using their facilities. I guess for those who love pro sports nothing changes as they tend to just have a vicarous attachment to a team name or colors. For those who loved COLLEGE sports there wont be much real attachment left to their state or school.

There is no question it was time for Mitch to step aside because the landscape as surely changed, but not in a good way.

I actually think Mitch is one of the best AD's in the country overall. He's well respected in his profession and did a lot of good things here.

Multiple things can be true at once. He had some massive blunders along the way too. He's definitely a horrible negotiator and he allowed a couple agents to back the program into a corner. Billy was a disaster, his relationship with Cal was a disaster, the stoops and cal contracts were very bad for the programs, the jury is still out on Pope but it's looking like a rash hire. This whole JMI thing has pretty bad optics as well. These are all events that will captivate any fanbase,

I do suspect he will be replaced by an understudy so I hope everyone is ready for that.
Look for a couple of his old assistants to be in the mix. Scott Strickland or Greg Byrne

Needed to happen. Mitch can ride off into the sunset with the Stein hire, and won’t have to be the one who will eventually fire Pope. Perfect timing on his part.
He’s going to be working at UK under the president for the next 2 years @ 800k/yr. Nice gem in his last contract!

An understudy would be an absurd choice for UK in the SEC. You don't go this route if you want to be a serious contender in our league. It just doesn't make any sense. Go for the gusto and get someone with balls and that has an aggressive, no holds barred approach to NIL, facilities, and marketing/PR.

One thing I believe this surely means:

Mark Pope is on the clock in 2027: Make the Final Four, or come very close with a team that was clearly capable of making it, or he's gone.

That may or may not be fair, but a new AD -- even someone hand picked by Mediocre Mitch -- cannot afford to be seen as being weak on taking control of the university's Crown Jewel: The basketball program.

So, I hope that focuses Pope's thinking, that he becomes like a ruthless beast facing extinction and drags the program to another level. His clock is ticking...
