I am just curious, if say we only get 5 back next year. The rest transfer/NBA draft.

I only added people who played + Hawthorne. I didn't add Reece Potter because we may never get to play or just transfer.

This thread is designed to get a pulse based off this board, if only 5 could back next year, who would they be and why? What players were easy for you to want back and then others where challenging to pick?

My Easy Picks
Moreno - Going to be a significant Sophomore
Chandler - Has a ton of upside, he can only improve
K Williams - Same as Chandler
Brayden Hawthorn - Would like to see what he brings to the table.

My Contention Pic
Mo D vs Johnson

I have been a Jasper advocate all year, (still am), but this pick is because of bigger picture.

I really wanted to give Johnson a chance because I think he has an extremely high offensive game, but his defense is absolutely bad.

So I picked Mo D over Johnson because if he sticks to his role as the under the basket bruiser who can get rebounds, put back points and make a few free throws, that can be hard to come by. If Mo D can keep this role and be a poor man's Dennis Rodman, I think those hustle plays under the basket is hard to let go.

In order of who I want back most

Moreno
Chandler
Kam
Jasper
Jelly

Mo isn’t a good fit with Pope. Good defense and rebounding but zero floor spacing. Lowe didn’t contribute much even when he played. Can he stay healthy next season even? I can take or give Noah. I do not want Brandon Garrison anywhere near this team next year.

I agree. But I picked Mo D over Jasper as of now. I think Mo D is that bruiser under the basket. If he can be that role-player it's fine, but the other 4 on the floor need make up for his lack of offense.

That’s fair and I don’t fault anyone for not wanting Jasper back. Me picking him over Mo is strictly based on hoping Pope can bring out his potential. He has all the talent in the world but he’s been disappointing so far this season.

CC and Moreno were my two picks

The rest are all too mediocre.

Don’t be the frog in the boiling pot, cat fans!

That’s how we turn into IU basketball
Fan posts on an online message board have nothing to do with whether or not we turn into IU basketball. The moment fans realize this, the earlier people can get back to peaceful debates rather than vitriol and disdain.

Pretty easy exercise for me. That's a good core and then go get 2 stud portal players and hopefully Stokes. If not stokes get 3 portal elites.

If Mo D didn't get better and hustle for us over the last month, I may have not put him over Jasper. I really want Jasper back. I think he can be a good 2 if given the chance. He has a ton of upside. The reason why I picked Mo D over jasper is based off balance of what is coming back. I could put Jasper over Hawthorne. I wish we could see what Hawthorne could bring. Ideally, I think after thinking about it, the 3 Contention are Mo D, Jasper and Hawthorne.

If there are 6 back, I hope its those.

Moreno and Chandler are the obvious 2 that could be stars. KW and AJ have potential so they are my next 2. I go back and forth on JJ as I still think he could be good but he is so frustrating.

Chandler, Moreno, Williams, Mo D and Lowe would be my 5. Go ahead and hammer me on Lowe. My thing is that you can never have too many ball handlers, guys who can get to the rim at will, guys who can actually run an offense, etc. Also, dude gave it everything he had to try and help us win games, with one arm. If he can be reeled in and be taught to be disciplined and have a better shot selection, he could be a very good PG for us.

EDIT: would take him over Jasper every day of the week. I just absolutely do not see what yall see in that kid. He’s probably two years away from being able to contribute on both ends of the floor.

Farsight, you've been killing it with some great thread ideas lately. I wish I could choose more than 5 though.
I think if Pope is truly back next year, 90% chance he will be, who would be your total picks?

I did 5 because it could make it challenging to pick. If I used my own biases, I would have went 6 lol

I picked:

Chandler
Moreno
Williams
Hawthorne
Lowe

AJ would by my 6th pick. I like MoD but wouldn't choose to have him back because I don't think he's the best fit wtih MM.

Yep! BG gots to go! 🤣 Dude just doesn’t contribute anything, outside of setting screens. It’s incredible how damn bad he is, for an almost 7 foot former McDonalds AA center. Worst McDonalds AA I can ever remember.

MM and Chandler are the obvious picks.

I went Jelavic because if he can get a little stronger and more consistent shooting, he is the perfect 4 for Pope.

Williams and Johnson for last two. Pope’s system needs shooters so that tipped it for Johnson. Probably should’ve gone Hawthorne though. Already regretting picking Johnson.

This kind of thread forces you to visibly crap on current players. Call me a troll all you want but this is the real troll stuff.

I love BG. Can only pick five out of how many? And yall said they read this not me. But I picked five lol.

Either way, gotta find an Aberdeen type dog PG in the portal. Like an absolute stud. None of this soft, ball dominant Lowe stuff. Beyond that, need a big time scoring wing. Even if everyone that COULD return DOES return, those two things are a must have. And then you need a depth piece at PG as well. Even if we return your 5 and include JJ and Hawthorne, there's still so much more missing. Pope simply must upgrade the talent level in year three.

I would have to say this is looking for something that isn't there. There has been no trolling or bashing of players here. I am not really sure what you're on about here?

I decided to pick 5 out of 10 to see what players are more meaningful or next year. It was intentionally supposed to be challenging.

Having to pick 5 is rough. Not because you have to crap on certain players, but because we have zero recruits and no guarantees that we get "better" players from the portal. I'm not a BG fan, but let's say he does transfer. Potter is your backup Center at best unless you get a good portal guy. But at the same time, what solid portal center will want to come play 10-15 minutes behind a future NBA caliber Center?

What if Lowe transfers? Now we have to get two point guards out of the portal, one stud to run the program and a backup or we are right back where we were this year.

What if Kam transfers and we don't get Stokes? Is Hawthorne our 3? And what if Mo and Jella leave, one or both? Is Hawthorne out only 4?

Pope is in a wild spot of the staff's own creation. They recruited some young athletic talent that needed time to develop (Hawthorne, JJ, Moreno) for hopefully multiple years of play. They got Sophomores and Juniors from the portal to fill out the roster and have an extra year or two in the program. The possible continuity is a great upside. However, this hurts recruiting as kids can't see their spot as anything but a depth piece. What 2 guard looks at UK right now from HS and says he can take Chandler's spot from him, honestly, next season with Chandler as a Jr. What Center thinks he can beat out Moreno for minutes? What PG thinks Pope will hand them the keys instead of a returning healthy Sr Lowe. Step back and look at things from 10'000 feet with less emotions for a moment and you will start to realize why we aren't getting recruits, they don't see a place. Makes it hard to recruit. The obvious pitch is Oweh's spot, and Oweh's minutes. And I think that's what this staff will focus on filling first before they commit to any other position with "substantial" money outside of retaining what we do currently have. Call me crazy, but that's the tea leaves I am reading. This staff is focused on a core of multi year depth pieces and trying to add a couple studs to that core each year going forward (verses year one where they were kind of forced to take mid major seniors and underrated all heart players.

I’m curious to how Jasper would look or have developed had he not had to play the point and focus on his natural position as a 2/3. Maybe nothing would have changed but he does have to get stronger and be explosive vs hesitant and passive, he’s definitely an off the ball player or has been brought up that way. And yes, I know his defense has been terrible as well but struggling on one end can lead to struggling on the other as well.

I wanted to pick (at least) 7.
I'm just shocked that 3 of the 59 did NOT pick Moreno in top 5.
I think many of us would like Noah to return, he's just (clearly) not in hardly anyone's top 5.
I'm also surprised almost half of us (including me) are picking a player (in top 5) we've not seen play (Hawthorne).
