Well to be fair, this is a tiny amount compared to the NFL payouts when you include both their NFL compensation (signing bonus & salary) and their endorsement money (NIL!).

Oregon spent close to $40M last year amongst others IIRC.

This is the new cost of business in big college football. The schools I tend to cheer for (RU, Northwestern, MAC schools) are not on firm ground in this new CFB economy.

It's tough to compare NFL to college football in that respect. On one hand, the NFL is bound by a salary cap which helps level the field and the payouts are derived through revenue. College has no such salary cap and is halfway to more than halfway funded by what boosters have the biggest pockets. With no restrictions, it's going to be an all out bidding war. Just two years ago, Ryan Day talked about needing 10-12 million for his roster. Today 40 mil is the new number.
