The data centers themselves don't employ a lot of people. It will create a lot of temporary contracts for the construction. After that, you'll have a dozen H1Bs manning the station.

They are power suckers tho. We have to come up with a solution. I was listening to a podcast with one of the guys from Anduril (not Lucky). He said the administration is attempting to green-light small nuclear facilities that would provide enough power to cover itself, plus additional power to the grid. That seems like a logical solution on the surface.

30-40 Years ago everyone was going to die from cancer if they lived closed to high voltage transmssion lines via EMF.

In the last decade -- Low-frequency hum and vibrations from wind turbines, often below the audible range (infrasound), are reported to cause health issues for nearby residents, including sleep disruption, nausea, headaches, tinnitus, vertigo, and increased anxiety. These symptoms, sometimes referred to as "Wind Turbine Syndrome," result from pressure pulsations stimulating the inner ear, with effects often persisting indoors and through earplugs

Lots of people live close to busy train tracks or major airports.

I work on and live close to a fighter base with F-15s and yes the sound of freedom is freaking loud and also have the misfortune of living close enough to train tracks to hear the train horn at all hours of the night.

For these AI Data Centers, the sooner small modular reactors can be developed the better.

I’ve always thought AI would eventually be limited. It might be due to data center storage.

We have the tech. Nuclear is the way to go and could benefit us in many ways. Politicians are scared.
From what I understand the capital required to stand up additional nuclear capacity is the limiting factor. None of these monopolies want to be the first to strap on a capital expenditure of that magnitude at the risk that they cannot recoup the investment thru a reasonable rate structure.

No one died from Three Mile Island. The US navy has been fueling ships with it for 60 plus years. No accidents. The USS Gerald Ford can stay at sea for ten years without refueling. The US army is going nuclear. It is safe and we are stupid not to build more. You want clean energy Nuke is the way to go.

The US is woefully behind on updating the power grid. We should be adding hundreds of thousands of miles of power lines and I think it’s been an average of about 70,000 miles a year.

It’s localized to the neighborhoods around it but it is an issue. I have a buddy from high school that has family that lives not far from it and he said the hum is real.

There’s some not in my backyard mentality to this but honestly it’s really poor planning to put something like that near so many houses.
Poor planning is an understatement. This will destroy home values for a lot of people.

That’s saying something considering the amount of money these companies are sinking into AI.

Saw Nvidia posted $120B in ACTUAL PROFIT in 2025.

so tell your kids to quit learning about anything not AI-related.

They are actually doing studies into a plant next to the 49ers practice facility. They lead the NFL in injuries and many think it is due to the power plant.

Anyone that cries about climate change and green energy, but refuse to talk about nuclear is not worth my time. If we would have invested all the money we spent on solar and wind power into nuclear we would be in such a better place.

We honestly should be fighting these faculties. A community just took on the government and tech to prevent a data center being built in New Jersey. I think AI is great and use it at work, but I also see the dark side. There is no reason to build this in the middle of Southaven. It will not bring jobs after it is complete, the noise and water issues are not worth it. AI can be good, but our government are refusing to add safeguards because of money.

Yes we would. And if we’re going to continue down the AI super servers path (and we will), it is the ONLY option. But there’s going to be a lot of pain & high electricity costs before we get there.

How long will it take to upgrade the power grid:
Normal Company: 2 Years
My Two Year Old: 5 Years
The Government: 100 Years plus another 100

Not a tree hugger. Wind and solar are laughable. But there are still some unknowns with the nuclear option that give me pause. I’m also not blind to “studies” perhaps being compromised.

The government doesn’t own the power grid. I’m convinced many of you just throw out the word ‘government’ as a catch all for things you don’t understand. When in doubt blame government. Who exactly?

Jimmy Carter got a lot of things wrong but nuclear he got right. If it wasn't for Three Mile Island scaring the hell out of everyone, we would have been way better off today.

I will say Chernobyl is the most terrifying several hours of TV I have ever watched
Keep in mind the government that ran those reactors. Safety systems were minimal and not redundant either.

Having worked in the nuke industry for more than 10 years (about 20 years ago), the safety focus in the U.S. is off the charts. Yes, there are still issues and you ALWAYS have to get through the people issues and folks that may try to cover things up because it effs up their bonus and promotion opportunities, but the safety culture there steadily got better and better ever year I was there and without complacency.

I’d a lot rather they put a nuclear plant in my town than a coal plant. Much safer a less unhealthy.

I agree 100% with you that nuclear is the way to go, but Chernobyl happening probably pushed everyone away from that

No, Three Mile Island was what really hurt the expansion of the nuke industry. Most reactors were already operating, and the last few were very far along when Chernobyl happened 40 years ago.

And the design of the actual reactors was flawed too.

As usual the American stuff was like Snap On tools. The Russian stuff was like Pittsburgh tools.

What about the nuclear waste?
Easy. Carry it all to one of those hazardous waste collection days some towns have.
