Biggest problem with JJ is the same problem with every player on the team.

They are not coached. They are not shown how to succeed nor put in a position to succeed.

Our hope we make it offense looks great when we make it. Our hope they miss defense looks great when they miss.

Just look how great our lay up defense was last night. Dikes said they missed 12 lay ups.

That was a terrible call on the in bounds play but when has this team been good at in bounding all season?

Under almost any coach JJ would be a star. 27 games into his freshman year and he still looks like game 1.

This is the answer. He'd be a stud at Alabama under Oats. He has shown flashes of how good he is. He just has no coaching to get him out of those freshman mistakes. Because Pope is a middle school girls coach.

I bet him and his people are thinking he would be better at another school.
Yet HE is the one who cannot handle the ball.

But I guess if I am the coach, that is all I am having him work on, in the gym with guys ripping at his handles until he gets better.
Every Drill possible until this is better. But what do I know, I just see the obvious stuff that is the problem on the screen.
Not sure what our coaches are seeing.

He just can't compete at this level right now.

I had high hopes for him early this season, but he has refused to change the way he plays. He has learned nothing from what I can tell.

I’ve posted it multiple times on my threads here. Just look how no one has proper footwork at any position especially the bigs around the rim. It blatantly obvious no fundamentals are being taught. It’s unfair to all the players, especially BG and JJ. You only need 3 basic moves around the rim. I’ve not seen a player do even 1 this year.

Given the way the game was officiated, constant grabbing/holding of dribblers, bumping cutters off their paths, etc, it was probably right to sit him.

I agree that he’s not getting great coaching, but he has to take ownership of his lack of commitment to getting in shape and ball handling.
Remember how Cal was always talking about that exact thing, how he was teaching players that they need to take ownership, built confidence by working by themselves, how they can go at any hour of day and night and if they an assistant coach will be there?

Cal bought that machine that you can track your shooting….man if I was a player at Uk I would sleep in th e players area and be on the gym any free moment I would and work at my craft…..

Im predicting Kentucky is gonna have a very hard time filling out the roster next year. And no one really seems to be paying attention to thr fact that eere probably going to get a lot of out going transfers as well.

The good thing is, if this season doesnt force UK basketball to be torn down to the studs, next year for sure will.
I agree. Chandler will be back, and possibly Williams But a whole new team next year and CMP didn’t get any studs this year.

I don’t like Cal, but he was correct in his assertion that guys have to do work on their own. Free throw shooting especially. I could practice for 30 minutes right now and make 80 percent. To be fair there would not be 15k people screaming at me though. The point is that players should put in the work. I doubt most of these guys go to class anyway. The walk ons, Noah, chandler, Moreno, and probably MoD go to class, that it so they have time.

At some point I hope an adult sits him down and explains to him the opportunities he’s wasting and the things he need to do to become a serious basketball player and not just some guy clowning around like it’s a pickup game. And I hope he’s smart enough to listen. But I was 19 once too. He may not.

"Coached" by Mark Fox and Mark Pope. He'd do well under Oats.
Richie, do you realize that oats has a realistic chance of having a 10 lost season this year? Not to mention how odd and unpredictable he is. I agree we need a change, but he's not it

I love Chandler, but he had an atrocious 2nd half and he deserves some blame for last night.
Yeah, he had a bad 2nd half. He is on his way to being a great player if he hangs around 4 years. Will be every bit of Richie Saunders as a Sr

He has 4 SEC titles, a final four, a #1 overall seed, and 2 elite 8s at Alabama. You don't think he deserves a down year? Calipari went to the NIT after 2 final fours and a title.

I’d root for Oats just like every coach we’ve had I guess. But I just don’t see why UK has to be forced to hire a scumbag. Duke doesn’t have to do it. Alabama or ND football doesn’t have to do it. And don’t get it twisted, blowing off a murder is a scum bag move. I don’t think Oats is particularly bright either and wonder how he would handle the media attention.

Calipari did the same https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/sports/nba-star-tyreke-evans-sued-over-fatal-shooting/1878344/ he was loved at UK day one.

Man, it must be good to live in an ivory tower. He didn’t blow off a murder. The kid committed no crime. You can’t do everything in the world to protect gun rights then randomly punish a kid and then the coach of a kid for them. It’s nonsense.
