Ava Heiden appreciation thread. Her 3 straight 20-pt double-doubles was the longest such streak by an Iowa player since Caitlin had 4 in March, 2024

No doubt Ava is a skilled young basketball player but what I love most about her is the energy and passion she plays with. Runs the floor hard, works for and goes and gets rebounds, and gets to the floor for the lose ball. We are so blessed to have a “big” like her who has both the skill and the “want to” in a Hawkeye uniform. She’s special and has a lot of love from true Hawkeye Nation.

In my book Ava came of age on February 26, 2025 at Michigan. We were in control of that game until MI went on a 15 to 2 run early in the 3rd quarter. We've gone stone cold and can't score. Enter Heiden, shot clock running down, nothing working in the half-court offense, Ava drives the baseline from the wing, beats her defender and hits reverse layup. I knew then we had a winner. Here's the photos -

As I watch it again, I think the Nebraska defender got a hand on the ball. I don't think it's possible to miss a shot that badly. I think Deal should claim it was a pass and file a protest.
I had to watch that several times, but I agree with you about the NE player getting a hand on the ball.

Incredibly athletic move by Ava.

This is a great part of her game. And the fact that she is not afraid to take those shots.
We also need more Journey. Playing herself into being the first off the bench ahead of AD.
Agree on both thoughts! Journey is becoming a real favorite with me because she does all the little things on the court, great BBall IQ, and always under control and hustling. Same for AH++.

I'd like our resident journalist to investigate whether Deal was shooting or whether she was passing to Ava. Kyle - get on it.
I'm pretty confident in saying it was NOT a pass. Addie was trying to beat the shot clock, rushed it, got it partially blocked, and Ava saw the trajectory of the ball and just reacted. But it was a beautiful thing either way.

The basketball announcers for women's basketball are not very good IMO. But great call by the PBP announcer on that play ....

"What did we just witness?!"

she's unstoppable right now. the next 2 years are gonna be fun.
I'm thrilled with her progress and the work she has obviously put in. I'll hold off on the "unstoppable" until we play UCLA in the conf tourney, and see what she has for Betts. Adding that 10-15 jumper could be just the ticket against the AA, but as always it will be whether or not she can avoid the silly fouls, and stay ON the court.
