Great Pirate reliever of the '50's & 60's. Known for his great forkball. RIP Elroy.
Believe that was Harvey Haddix. Listened to the game on KDKA out of Pittsburgh.12 perfect innings in 1959 only to lose the game in the 13th inning. His record of 36 consecutive batters retired to start a game will never be broken.
Correct. I also listened to the game. Became a Pirate fan after the Yankees won 5 World Series in a row (1949-1953). Decided to root for the worst team in baseball which was the Pirates at the time. Could only get the games at night on my AM radio. Bob Prince was the first announcer who was a real homer that I listened to.Believe that was Harvey Haddix. Prince was a piece of work. Called his side kick Jim Wood "possum". Remember him calling for a "bloop & a blast"? Sure was a homer.Correct. I also listened to the game. Back in the day (Elroy's time) homers were fun to listen to on the radio, if you were a fan of the team they announced for.Prince was a piece of work. Called his side kick Jim Wood "possum". Remember him calling for a "bloop & a blast"? Sure was a homer.
