Wolizco says hi. Number 6th ranked player in the country coming in. She'll make everyone forget about Hannah, unfortunately.

While I have high hopes for McKenna's career, I think it's a bit of a stretch to think she'll come in as a freshman and immediately make everyone forget about Hannah.

Besides, the post you're responding to is about the fact that Hannah is now the de facto backup at the 5, with Layla barely playing. I think Hannah's potential was hampered a bit by the fact that we had subpar true post options her sophomore and junior seasons, and she ended up having to play at the 5 for both of those seasons. Do you really want to repeat that with McKenna, needing her to play as an undersized post?

Love Houston’s demeanor on the floor. Always very calm and under control. She is going to be (and already is) a very good player for many years. And I like how she can hit that mid range shot. Tough on the boards for her size as well.
Now we know why she was ranked where she was ranked before her knee injury. I am excited for her.

I agree that McKenna probably will not be able to fill HS shoes as a freshamn. But between McKenna and Journey I believe they will exceed HS contributions. Just my SWAG.

This constant banging on Layla and Addie is irratating. We look great beating NB on the road and we have posters bitching about freshmen experiencing predictable growing pains adjusting to the upper level of D1 basketball.

Give them time for God's sake.

I watched the game last night on my DVR. I actually thought Deal played alright. Her shots off again, but she had several nice feeds to Ava and Hannah, a couple that she didn't get assists for, but she set them up nicely.

It is interesting. She was the one of the three freshman who people thought wouldn't contribute this year, and yet she's been pretty consistent, and has earned her spot in that top 7 or 8 players.

Well, she's not starting but being the 6th player would put her in the top 8 as well, NO?
I guess my only point was that she's shown far more skill and value today than anyone else not in the starting lineup, and perhaps at least one of the starters. Saying she's earned a spot in the top 7 or 8 means nothing, putting her alongside Layla and Addie, who have struggled mightily to adjust to this level of basketball.

Just thought that was kind of "picking nits" as it were. Unlike many here, I'm not writing Deal off yet this season, or post season. I wouldn't be shocked to see her have a game or two like Ava did in the post season. If she sees a couple of those shots go in , who knows. Deal has certainly been up and down, but you don't have the kind of game she did against a really solid OSU team if you don't have game. I think after she had a few double figure games, teams made some adjustments to her driving the ball, and she needs to work through some things again. She'll get there.

No nit's. She's been head and shoulders above the other 2 freshmen and played like a veteran all year and the numbers support that assessment in spades. She's been productive and often a lift every time she's been on the court. In short, she's been outstanding. Doesn't mean that I'm writing off Addie or Layla for that matter. That would be dumb. They're simply struggling as most freshmen do to playing against much better competition. As opposed to Journey, they're often a net negative on the court today while they're learning. That's just a fact, and the numbers bear that out as well.

My current internal reaction when each of the freshmen come in for the first time in a game:

Journey: calm and confident. I expect there to be little to no drop off in how the team is performing.

Addie: hopeful, knowing that she has the potential to have a high impact game, but also concerned that she can be cold and mistake prone some games. Box of chocolates situation.

Layla: I'm just hoping Ava is able to come back in ASAP

They all have room to really improve over the off season, but I'm a little concerned about Layla because I don't know which thing is the most important for her to focus on. Is it her hands? Her post moves? Avoiding fouls? Being stronger on rebounds? Free throws? She has a lot that really needs work in a finite amount of time.

We don't need Layla to become a good player between now and next year. Ava is going to garner 30+ mpg next year and Journey and Wolizco will handle Hannah's role. We just need her to consume minutes, play some defense, and grab some rebounds for roughly 10 minutes per game without hurting the team with turnovers. That's probably enough of a goal for her sophomore year to be considered reasonably successful. I think she can get there.

Deal's shortcomings are primarily mental. She'll be much more comfortable and make better decisions next year and she'll have to as I assume she'll be starting alongside Stremlow and CCW at a guard spot. If not, it could be a big problem as depth is already a concern.

Layla has work to do but what I see currently is that she is still in the think and react stage vs just being able to play ball. It’s like she is running through a mental checklist of what am I supposed to do vs knowing what to do. It will come with time.

Sounds about right to me and my feelings about subs off bench.

Layla is a young kid in a big body. She may take a few years to find balance and athleticism. Just a baby giraffe at this point.

If Deal makes the kind of jump from her fresh/soph year the way Strem has of late we'll be in really good shape alongside CCW, Ava, Journey and Mckenna. I think Levin can give some quality backup minutes in her 3rd year. The question revolves around Erod and Mallegni. Who's still on the roster, and what needs does that leave us with. Probably a good combo guard, (I'd be thrilled with another Molly Davis) and a 3/4...

Who's Erod? 😃 I feel good that they're going to have 2 proven double figure scorers next year in Ava and CCW. Stremlow and Journey are right there as well. If Deal can turn the corner next year the future bodes well.

Fuerebach played a great defensive game on Prince. Defense requires tremendous effort and heart. Nice game Kylie!
Exactly Prince had 27 at CHA and I might be wrong but I thought Kylie died shut her down on the 3rd or 4th Q, but anyway, she ended up with 13 yesterday and 2 of those were a gift because of an upgade foul that coach subbed her in to shoot the FTs.

Kylie did not play in the first game in CHA. Made a big difference this time.
I do feel sorry for Prince in one way. She was shooting 100% on free throws for the entire Big Ten season, that is until she went 5-6 yesterday. I doubt anyone has ever been perfect at the line for a whole season, conference or otherwise.

I wonder what the chances are of Price looking to portal to a better team after this season?

Maybe I'm getting her confused with another recruit but I think part of the reason she chose Nebraska originally is because she a relative with strong ties to the team/coaching staff

Thanks. I should check before I post. Prince had 17 at half and 4 in the 3rd and 6 in the 4th. I might watch a replay of the 2nd half to see who mostly guarded her, maybe committee.

I have an acquaintance whose son is on Nebraskas strength and conditioning and Prince is very unhappy with her situation at the present time. Take it with a grain of salt.

If she enters the portal I believe she will have a few top tier teams seeking her services. I’m guessing Jan would be kicking the tires on her, Jan has stated numerous times she recruited her very hard coming out of H.S.

She would immediately solve the perimeter depth problem going into next year and even up the Nebraska-Iowa portal relationship with the Sandfort exodus.

The only problem winning at Nebraska is our players need a steam shower to get that Nebraska stench off of them.

She and Lisa went hard after Prince. They saw the type of player she would become...
