Beat Minnesota and Maryland, and the whole season looks significantly different. The team had the flu @ Minnesota and lost by 3, and the Hawkeyes seemed listless after a lot of travel in their otherwise inexplicable loss to Maryland, a team that just lost to Rutgers by 11.
I suppose Iowa isn't the only team in a similar boat, but the reality is that Iowa easily could be/should be 20-5, 10-4 heading into the game vs. #7 Nebraska tomorrow night in Iowa City. And if they were, they'd pretty much have an NCAA slot locked up. Iowa played so hard and so well in narrow losses to top teams including Iowa State in Ames, Purdue @ West Lafayette, and Illinois in Iowa City. It seemed the Hawkeyes were a cinch for the NCAA tourney. But now?
As I've said in other posts, I'm not sure the Hawkeyes can win another game based on recent performances, which is why the Nebraska game may be pivotal. Pull that upset, or at least keep it highly competitive, and maybe Iowa can finish well enough to reach the NCAA tourney anyway. But another ugly game tomorrow and, well, I don't want to think about it.
So close . . .
