I’m so tired of being “decent”

This team will enter the NCAA Tourney something like 21-12 and probably a 9 or 10 seed.

Good times in Lexington!
It’s going to take a few of these guys a little longer to figure this out. Wait until next season when we’re getting blasted to start the year again with 3rd portal options. Some will admit they were wrong, the usual suspects won’t, a new hire will be around the corner and we’ll do all of this again.

The first three years of Cal looked a lot different than Popes first two years and that is what we should be looking for. Not comparing Pope to Cal his last 5 years. Cal won the SEC and SEC tourney in year one. Following Billy Clyde. If Pope can’t bring in 2-3 elite guys every year, he is failing at his job. Period. I actually think he might be a better X and O coach than Pat Kelsey but Kelsey is getting Elite recruits. Hard thing to do following the mess that the Cards were in. Pope better get a GM that can seal the deal on players ASAP.
Basketball is NOT just about recruiting. It isn't. It's also about developing your guys, developing a system, and the X's/O's. Cal was barely good at any of those three, but that doesn't fit the narrative. The days of elite recruits running around all over the floor are over. NIL changed that, but what's happened with NIL at UK also is not Pope's problem. That's a Barnfart issue.

The pumpers gotta be opposing fans, right? I mean it's clear to see who benefits from Kentucky being mediocre.
No, you call us "pumpers" because we don't fall in line with your thinking. You're disappointed with not getting elite recruiting classes, I get it. We "pumpers" are simply people with perspective, who can see what is going on in the college basketball landscape. Whether you like it or not, Pope is going to have to win games in the tournament in order to get that "he can't win in March" off his back. That's what a lot of this is about. That takes time. The all-time wins record really doesn't mean a darn thing on a year to year basis.

We’ve been pretty awful since Covid. 12- loss seasons have become normal. 1st round losses to St. Peter’s and Oakland.

Probably the worst decade in modern Kentucky Basketball history.
Yeah, we've had one good season- Reed and Rob- and Cal effed that one up.
2018 was our last E8. EIGHT YEARS AGO.

Wisconsin had the highest or 2nd highest rated offense of the Kenpom era in 2015. And had two top 25 NBA picks on that team. Let's not act like that team was trash. Who just got lucky.
I was never worried about losing that game until we got a decent lead. Cal showed that game just how pathetic a coach he was. We were running them off the court until Cal decided to milk the clock enough to get a shot clock violation multiple possessions. Cal was always horrible about this, and only got worse after. At least now I feel like we always hve a chance to win at the end.

The revisionist history surrounding this game drives me absolutely nuts. We never had a decent lead in that game. We started 5-0 but after that the biggest lead we had the entire game was four points with six and a half minutes left in the game.

It's more than injury mismanagement, it's financial as well. Whatever money he got is a sunk cost, it could have and should have gone to someone who can help us.
Thanks for clarifying. That’s what I actually meant by mismanagement. I’m sure he has gotten A+ medical treatment.

Yeah, Pope is a good coach but doesn’t have the elite “salesmanship” to compete at the top level here. You need at least two elite guys to compete at an elite level, it can’t be just good coaching with some decent roll guys. Cal had the salesmanship but didn’t know when to take off the salesman hat. Pope will get one more “show me” year, but right now it’s looking like we’re going to have another average portal haul. The question is are our fans okay with average from now on? I could throw in injuries as an additional mismanaged problem
What can you point to that makes you say he is a good coach?

What does Pope do well as coach?

Funny that Duke has no problem having elite recruits running all over their floor. Meanwhile Pope has nearly twice as many losses this year as Duke the last two years combined.

Not likely to be different next year unless we keep everyone we can and add an elite PG and at least 1 more shooter.
And I'd be ok with that. We have some decent pieces. We just need a go to guy and one more knock down shooter besides CC

JQ doesn’t count he recruited him and he was never healthy to begin with. Lowe is not a dominant guard and a lot of basketball guys including the field of 68 who know a lot about the game think it was a bad recruit to take. Kam is not Kobe Bryant.

We were getting blown out with that roster and everyone deals with injuries.

11 years since we’ve been in a final four. Nearly the same time frame since an elite 8 save 1 year. Pope has been average his entire career and has no recruits coming in. He’s the worst recruiter we’ve ever had at Kentucky.

How long do you think we need to wait and see if he can turn into someone else entirely?
It's not that difficult. He gets 3 years to show what he can really do, just like every other reasonable program does. If he can't keep us in the top 25 next year and doesn't make a deep tourney run, then I think we should probably go a different direction. But I guarantee you won't accept this answer because your question wasn't honest and was rhetorical. You want to fire Pope now and nothing will change your mind.
