Kicks off tonight in Gretna with the annual Fireman's Fish Fry, followed by 7 weeks of Friday night fish fries (some places run through Good Friday). A great Nebraska tradition. Some other areas might do fish fries, but few places I have been do it up like Nebraska. What are your go-to? Post-covid, Gretna Legion has pretty consistently been one of the best for taste, and for sticking to traditional fish fry fare: fish, mac and cheese, cole slaw, baked beans, rye bread, tartar sauce.

I find when I reel in slabs of walleye with shore lunch is the best time.
although I tried red snapper a few times and I'd like to reel in some of them also

From personal experience, who puts on a really good fish fry? I grew up Catholic, but fortunately overcame it. Told the wife I wanted to go to a fish fry for old times sake. She said, but we’re not Catholic. I said that’s OK. They’ll still serve us. Good food is good food and it’s mostly a good cause.

You really can't go wrong. Holy Name and Holy Ghost are big ones.

St. Vincents is good.

Holy Name is the "granddaddy of them all". Bring your cooler of beer, etc. Drink and socialize in line. Go through the school then tunnel. Once in the church basement, park your cooler, grab your free beer and head inside. More beer, raffles and finally the food, which is good with free seconds. I always see people I know. You will smell like fish. Don't forget to grab your cooler, I've heard some idiots have left them. 🍻😬

They go through teachers pretty quickly. We’ve lost some good ones recently.
It happens. Teachers have started to move around more often now. Before if you were at STJ you tended to stay there for 40 years.

As someone who has lived in the South my entire life the "fish fry" sounds like a beautiful thing. Never had anything like that here. Especially when I see the church's as the spots that have them. Down here a fish fry happens in someone's back yard . Lot of beer, liquor and other recreational "things" lol. Plates are sold and is usually similar things. Fish..usually whiting, catfish, or flounder. Slaw, baked beans and bread. Most likely you will find some domino games, spades card games and some kinda gambling lol.

I'm sure it's different but if I'm ever in Nebraska again around this time I'd love to attend one. I'm not catholic so I hope that wouldn't be a problem. Sounds like a hell of a time.

Yeah that’s no problem whatsoever.
