It appears for the second time in 3 years the AD may have had record revenue and record expenses and is basically breaking even. Unless Kraft gets a handle on expenses, I am not sure this may be sustainable.

15 million for mens basketball, with a slight net and 5 and a half million for womens with over 4.5 in losses.

From the pdf file, it appears "Other" Revenues probably include at least some contributions and royalty/licensing revenues that cannot be directly allocated to specific sports. "Other" Expenses include things like administrative costs and debt service.

Thank you. I was hoping for more granularity. I guess that's all they need to provide for reporting, though.

Oh, there is a lot that can be extrapolated within.
My newsletter folks will be receiving the full analysis - and I will post some of the Cliff's Notes here within the next few days. Much more there than meets the eye.

I wish we could see the itemization of "Other."

Yes, it is clearly the "other" category which needs to be examined in terms of addressing waste and to try to get things under control.

Is the Beaver Stadium changes expensed under "other" (since it is a facility) or "football" (since it is for that sport). I'm assuming it has to be in Other which might explain at least part of why that is so high.

Penn State Athletics Debt Hit $535 Million Amid Stadium Rehab

Already, by far, the largest ICA debt in the nation.

Keep in mind:
1) Beaver Stadium debt was to be tranched (ie, taken out in chunks, as needed)
2) These reports are "lagging". In this case, only through 6/30/25
3) That means the large majority of debt for Beaver Stadium reno is NOT yet even included in this figure.
Oops

It's surprising that basketball made a profit. Poor attendance must have been compensated for with payouts from playoffs, TV money, and such. Also, it is surprising that the best wrestling team in history lost money. I suppose that is because they have few dual meets and low TV revenue.

It looks like if they get into financial trouble the first sports to be dropped is baseball and women's basketball.

If there is a seismic shift in college athletics to effectively giving athletes professional status (employment contacts, collective bargaining, etc...), will that invalidate Title IX protection? Meaning can schools shitcan under performing women's sports?

I don't think we can get rid of women's basketball without also getting rid of men's basketball and basketball is a "core" sport that all major schools have. We just happen to suck.

I know there's a list of sports that the B1G requires all schools to have. BB and WBB is not going anywhere. We're lucky they only suck.

I know, just comparing expenses and the fact that even though they are terrible the mens can still get a small profit. Considering how bad the womens team is, they should never travel out of the mid atlantic to play a game that is not a conference game. Play all the PA D1 programs so they can bus there.

Title IX would still apply. Employers cannot discriminate against their employees.

I'm not an accounting guy but why does our men's volleyball team generate a profit and our highly successful women's program run a huge deficit? They play in the same facility and basically have the similar travel schedule.

They both have deficits. The MVB just has less of a deficit than last year.

The 1st 4 words of your post were dead on though. 🤣

Title IX refers to education programs getting federal assistance. If it is no longer an education system but rather a business, for profit or 501c, then can't schools decide to be in the business of sports that make financial sense instead of funding losing women's sports just so there's balance?

If the sports were to be separated from the schools, then yes. I am not sure that is being considered at this time.
It seems it should be done though.
