Great communicator, straight forward and comes across as being a very knowledgeable football coach. Excited about PSU footballs future under CMC.

One key takeaway for me is he believes the primary team build is HS recruiting and developing those players. It came through in many of his answers. Hoping the staff is able to build a strong 2027 class of top 15 rated given the late start.

Did he say "obviously" in every sentence?

I listened to it in its entirety and he did really, really well. I believe we are very fortunate to have him. I loved his honest assessments, including telling us that he challenged Martin to bulk up to 220. He is absolutely right as he is a relatively tall running back and 198 is not going to cut it in Conference play. I love that we have a 2 1/2 deep OL! It sounds like he is looking for best fits above any other factor as his central roster strategy. I know we all can’t wait for 2026. I have no doubt we will do well this season. 2026 is a team loaded with the very best of an Iowa State team that was going to contend for a conference title combined with some of the most important pieces from the prior talented PSU squad. There’s significant talent on this 2026 team. How he builds this program in 2027 and beyond will be more interesting.

I really like Campbell's confident, yet humble demeanor. He seems totally willing to embrace the Penn State traditions that have always made the program unique.

My favorite comment (with apologies if not verbatim):
" ... what Penn State football represents: integrity, character, class, grit ...."

He should communicate that to some on here because many here think the portal is the magic bullet to solve every team’s problems. When guys like Campbell and Saban say you can’t live in the portal for long term success, I tend to believe them.

A result of the Indiana success has every team now trying to replicate it. While it was an amazing feat - likely the greatest story in college football history - I do not think it is sustainable nor will be repeated. Truly lightning in a bottle. I think Cignetti is a very good coach, but believe they are in for a reality check this year.

In addition to 'no heat' at the indoor facility Franklin's presser also featured wild mic feedback that took some time to correct. Good that VT is upping their funding for football - seems like it's desperately needed.

He has his work cut out for him; essentially having to build the program's physical infrastructure as well as build a team. Like PSU many years ago...

I’d have to agree. As some point, probably soon, there will be no backup QBs or freshman QB’s at Oregon, for example. They aren’t going to play so why go?

I don't know, why can't they look to the portal for a starting QB if they got the funds? Both QBs in the national title game were transfers. Think they key will be to have a system that players can pick up relatively quickly.

I listened to his PC and it was fine. It was not a home run nor a strike out.

Everyone is high on this guy after the presser and we are still in the "honey moon" phase of this marriage. Can't wait to see when the games start and the PSU beat writers start asking their boneheaded dumbarse questions to get click bait and how Campbell handles it.

BTW, F the old coach, no one cares anymore. Stop bringing the snake oil salesman up in rando threads.

I think you misunderstand the portal and what people are saying. It gives and it takes away. If you build an entire program of just recruits, you risk losing them to the portal when they don't play, you don't win, or you won't break open the bank to pay them every year. Everyone agrees you can't have an entire new team of portal players every year, but it gives you the benefit of plug and play options, depth replenishment, and smoothing over earlier recruiting misses. It needs to be a balance.

It was a very straight forward and inspiration press conference. I can see why his players are so loyal to him. Looking forward to his first game

Players and coaches from 20+ years ago are continually brought up in different threads and you expect people to stop talking about our head coach who was fired just a few months ago? Not happening any time soon. Actually, it will never happen.

Recruiting is so 1990.

Look at tOSU and how they have utilized the portal, it is not just Indiana.

Transfers and bank accounts are going to determine Top Ten teams more and more. The days when you could sign a bunch of top recruits, perhaps with hidden money like the SEC teams, and compete are going to be fewer and fewer. Players will be more difficult to keep and it is not easy now.

No. I understand completely. There are some in here that downplayed losing two entire recruiting classes with the coaching change by saying the portal is the way to go anyway and HS recruiting no longer matters. While there is a grain of truth to that, you have two proven coaches in Saban and Campbell saying the backbone to successful programs is still recruiting and development. The portal, as you say, should be used to supplement rosters. Building an entire roster out of the portal is tricky. Sure, people want to point to Indiana’s success, but Colorado is the other end of the spectrum in that experiment.
