Harvey is the only "true" 197lb on the Iowa roster now. The plan was obviously for him to RS and probably get to an off season weight of 210-215 this year but he is the best option now unless they want to bump up some smaller guys from 184 for the remainder of the season. I guess we will see tonight. Realistically they could use 3 or 4 guys over the course of the season and not burn any of their redshirts like they did with Ferrari last year. They only have 8 duals left, but 6 of those are very tough and they will need all the points they can get at 197 or at least minimize the points they give up at 197. The tournament is another issue
Heard they might bump Gabe Arnold, a 174 pounder, all the way up to 197.. lol. It’s kind of telling if they feel Arnold would be their best option if he has to bump that much.. and a little funny bout the size diff he would have to face.
If true about Ludington, I wonder if we go after him or are we dead in the water, as ASU seems like the most viable candidate for a transfer.I think the Brands Bros.are loosing their sнӏт with the latest dismissings, and the pressure from fans, alumni, and the AD to compete with Penn State.
ASU would 100 percent be in the drivers seat with his hs coach and teammates and he was originally committed to ASU. Idk if Harvey family returned to the Nevada / Arizona area after graduated , if they are still in NJ I think Rutgers has a chance.I haven’t heard anything about him leaving Iowa but just looking at the situation and whats going on with missed NIL payments I think he leaves.
Gabe Arnold was the starter at 184 last year. He is making the cut because he cant beat Ferrari. He wasn't a huge 184 but he isn't really jumping from 174 to 197. Definitely would be undersized but he is strong and pretty talented. he would probably be a blood round guy at 197.
I believe Arnold is like 5’7 and more natural 174er. He was bumping up to 184 to face off guys like Plott and Feldkamp. I’m pretty sure they said he was bumping up to face them but could be wrong. And 174 don’t think Arnold is beating Kennedy either so he is in a tough spot.
I’m just a little surprised Iowa feels Arnold is their best option at 197.. he is going to be severely outsized..
Ludington decommitted from ASU prior to Iowa. Speculation was that there were NIL issues then.
Even tho Gabe wrestled against Haines at 174.. some reason he still looked smaller then Haines.. curious why Iowa sent out Brody Sampson at 197 instead of Ludington.
I think if the match was close it would have been Luddington. I think they are going to preserve his redshirt as long as they can and see what happens. If Brands thinks the points at 197 will make a difference in the team score, I think its Harvey. If they feel they finish 4th in the team standings regardless of 197, I think they keep the redshirt. I think the best Iowa can do is 3rd. They clearly saw PSU is out of reach
ASU is a hot mess right now. Wonder if the coaching staff will even be the same next season.
Great analogy.Spot on.I do think he stays at Iowa, but I did hear he was unhappy.Who knows.A kid could be having a bad and say he hates where he is, but is really just frustrated.
Arnold At 184
Gabe Arnold will move up to 184 pounds for Friday’s dual. Arnold will be replacing Angelo Ferrari, who has wrestled the last five duals at the weight class.“We have great depth with Gabe Arnold,” Brands said. “We have a guy that is all in for what we need, and that’s where we’re at.”
Arnold has been at three different weights this season. He is 4-2 at 174, including a 4-2 loss to Penn State’s top-ranked Levi Haines last Friday. He is 4-0 at 184, and has two wins at 197.
Choices At 197
Redshirt freshman Brody Sampson and true freshman Harvey Ludington are the choices at 197 heading into Friday’s dual.That one, Brands said, might be a true match-time decision.
“They battle quite often — Sampson and Ludington,” Brands said. “And there is a clash of styles there a little bit. It's a very fun, healthy rivalry in the room, and that's great. We're not going to have a wrestle-off there. We're going to do the right thing by the individual and for the team, and this will be a minute-before-they-go-out-to-the-mat decision. We got two guys going — Sampson and Ludington — and we'll figure that out as we come to Friday.”
Sampson was the choice last Friday against Penn State, losing by pin to top-ranked Josh Barr in 3:42
I think 197 will be Sampson if it doesnt matter and Luddington if it does. What could be interesting is if Luddington does not go in any of the dual meets, could he wrestle in the NCAA tournament and still redshirt. I think you get 4 dates. If he doesn't use any dates could he theoretically wrestle the first day of the big 10. Forfeit day 2 and then wrestle all 3 days of the NCAA tournament? If he forfeits day 2 of Big 10 tournament does it still count as a date?

Kind of wonder if Pinto didn’t transfer if he woulda been able to start at Nebraska this year.. if he can’t beat Minto then maybe he woulda went 184 and Allred to 197.
I was not Impressed with harvey against the number 26th rank guy. Looked , very overwhelmed and lost to a guy that didn't even place in the state tornament in high school
Huh? The guy he lost to Nelson is a 3x Minnesota state champ and 5x state placer ,made a cadet world team ,was ranked #23 overall in his class and was the #1 220 pounder.
He looked like an 184 wrestling a 220 pounder last night.Hes the same height as SCW but looks smaller then even him . He really looked 2 weight classes smaller but I’m sure Corby will be here any minute to let us know that Lundington is definitely a 197 and Iowa knows exactly what they are doing developing him.
Hes still growing into the weight but his cert was 197 the #s didn't show he's a 184
Think u put too much stock into a wrestler’s high school credentials over the then and now. Ludington got a pretty good hs resume too but rn he lost to #26 Nelson and would probably be a borderline NQ if he goes this year.

He’s also beat Sonny Sasso and Shumate from Ohio state this year who teched Cotton at midlands. He looked twice the size of Lundington, it looked like a 197 bumping up to a small heavyweight
There is no point in burning his redshirt now. Iowa will finish 4th or 5th in the Big 10 Tourney and 7th or 8th in the NCAA tournament. If they had a shot at winning , sure, burn it.
I guess we want a 184/197 when we already have both a 184 and a 197 for the foreseeable future.

Don’t know if the young guys at the lower weights will be ready enough to handle the grind of a full season next year.
Would like to see Gibson at 133 and see how he competes after another off season of training
I feel we are good w SCW/Cotton at 184/97.. both are currently R16 lvl that could eventually ascend to R12/AA lvl.
Yeah I guess some on here still thinks Harvey has massive potential and if he were to transfer out of Iowa that we should spend $$$ to explore this option.
Would have to imagine he does. Goodale said Gibson really should be at 133.. Gibson probably figured there’s no way would be able to start at 133 this season so why not let his body fill out and see if he would grow more into 141.
W Joey O still out, curious who ppl think is the next best option at 141.. Parkins and Gibson have two totally diff body types.. who should we send out vs Minnesota’s Vombaur.
I like Gibson's moxie and upside but he is just too small for 141. Send out Parkins.
