It shouldn't be a hard decision, break the record if you can. That's why there are records. Otherwise remove it from being a thing. It's stupid that we have players missing free throws on purpose. It's like people think that's the only way to keep Street in our memories. If Street lives on in Iowa history, it won't be because he has the free throw record. Street was much more than a free throw record, so let the record be broken.

It was absolutely an intentional miss.

Agree on your last point, though.
You could be correct, but that shot could have easily gone in. After the game, he was asked if he intentionally missed and he didn't say he did. He said that the record wasn't meant to be broken by him. Here's the video.

One additional thought, it would be good if the Street family came out and said it was ok to break the record. Have they made any statements?

EDIT:

This what I got from Google AI search:

Mike Street told Bohannon that while they appreciated the gesture, he wanted to see the record broken, encouraging him to "go on" next time.

It was obvious JBo missed on purpose, and how is it a "false record"? Nobody knows how many free throws Street would have added to the record if death hadn't intervened. That's what makes this record unique, as I explained earlier.
Street could have also missed the next one.

JBo threw up what looked to be almost be an air ball, to ensure it would be short. And then he pointed to the sky, in Chris' memory. During that moment, and postgame, the Streets knew what JBo had done.
He hit the front of the rim. It could have easily gone in. Like I said, it's not popular, but I don't think he intentionally missed the shot, especially considering they were in a close game.

This is coming from a guy that wasn’t the biggest JBo fan but I thought it was classy. I think it’d be classy if Banks missed on purpose in a first half or in a game they are comfortably ahead and there was a three-way tie. Obviously perfectly good with Banks breaking it too.

I agree.

Based on JBo’s own statement (“That record was not mine to have”), he should have missed the previous FT in order to preserve the record for Street. Instead, the record is shared.

But hey, the tale got JBo a lot of good publicity, so there’s that.

Clip below of the missed shot. Definitely not a “line drive” as suggested above. He just left it short. There’s only one person in the world who knows for sure if it was intentional.

To be honest I think he knew darn well that he'd get even more notoriety by doing what he did, and missing that. I think it was calculated. Think about it. Yes, he would have had the record, but outside of Iowa fans how many people would really have even known about it? As it was he ended up winning the Stan Musial sportsmanship award and went to some banquet. It made shows like Sportscenter, and was a topic on numerous others. He got way more pub and acclaim by missing that shot the he ever would have by making it.

I love the way Banks plays, and I recognize that records are made to be broken. But the Iowa free throw record is in a little different category. Nobody knows what that number would be because of the tragic death of Chris Street. That's why JBo tied it but refused to break it which, IMHO, is one of the most impressive decisions by an Iowa athlete--or any human--that I've witnessed in my decades on the planet. When Cal Ripken Jr. had a similar opportunity to tie rather than break Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak of 2,130, Ripken ignored the fact that Gehrig's record ended only because the Hall of Fame Yankee first baseman contracted ALS, now known as Lou Gehrig's disease. That's why I have no respect for Ripken or his record. To me, Gehrig will always own that record.

And that's why I have the ultimate respect for what JBo did, and that's why I hope that, if Banks' streak continues and he has a chance to break the record, the game situation will permit him to miss so he can tie Street and JBo. But maybe that's just me. I'd love to hear what Ben and Tavion think about it.
Sorry, but I don't think thats why he missed that shot. He got way more pub by missing that the he would have if he made it. How many people outside of Iowa would have cared at all? JBo liked to be noticed. You know, stunts like Signing your shoes "thanks for the memories" and leaving them at center court in Hilton.

JBo always had a flair for the dramatic.

For me, making or missing doesn't make someone classy or not classy.

Why would Banks intentionally miss FT’s 28, 29, or 30? Seems odd when 34 is the record.
I was just trying to point out that IF he was at the record tying free throw last night and missed intentionally because we had a big lead it could have been costly. I realize he wasn't there yet.

Former Iowa Hawkeyes basketball guard Jordan Bohannon was honored with the Stan Musial Award in 2018. He received this prestigious award for sportsmanship after intentionally missing a free throw to honor Iowa State's Tyler Madlock, who had recently passed away, during a game. The award is named after St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial.

Maybe it’s time for the record to be broken. At the time JB missed, and it was intentional, I was all on board. I was and still a CS fan, wear the sweatshirt every time I go to Carver, but think now if someone has a chance to break it do it and maybe point to the heavens. Just my take.

Really?

Baseball players miss games because they sneezed too hard and strain their back. No respect for a guy that played 2,632 games in a row? How about 3,184 hits and 431 HR's?

Not to mention (but I will anyway) -

Throughout his career, Ripken has contributed his time and money to numerous charitable organizations. Following the signing of his new contract in 1984, Ripken announced he would distribute 1984 Orioles tickets to underprivileged children in Harford County, donate to the Harford Center, and donate to the Baltimore School for the Performing Arts.[139] In 1988, he and wife Kelly founded the Cal Ripken Jr., Lifelong Learning Center, which is dedicated to teaching adults to read.[140] In 1992, MLB recognized him with the Roberto Clemente Award.[141] In 1997, Ripken received the Golden Plate Award of the American Academy of Achievement presented by Awards Council members and Baltimore Orioles co-owners Peter Angelos and Tom Clancy.[142]
[143]

To me, he deserves quite a bit of respect.

Of course they don't own the record, but there are a lot of weird fans that believe they do. And if Banks breaks the record, those fans are going to be pissed at Banks. It's crazy to think that would happen but it will. And some of those fans will really be pissed it was broken by someone of color.

I never understood NOT breaking a record on purpose

to me that goes against the nature of playing sports

records are meant to be broken!
Be different if the guy that had it didn’t get the chance to keep it going because he died. 🤷‍♂️

The same fans who will be pissed if Ben takes a team to the Final 4 because the 1980 team is the "best ever" to them

Total aside but anyone think it's crazy that Banks has made 30 in a row and still only an 80% ft shooter?

I actually thought earlier in the season that Stirtz was going to get a chance. I thought he was automatic at the line.

I am very pleasantly surprised that Banks is the one we’re talking about. Pretty cool for him. I know they said a few games ago that he got new contacts. Made me think of….
