Chris Street & JBo hold the Iowa men's basketball record for consecutive free throws made with 34.

Banks is at 30 in a row, correct?

As unpopular as it might be, I don’t think JBo intentionally missed that shot to keep him tied with Street. If Banks can beat the record he should. Otherwise, it’s a false record.
I agree.

Based on JBo’s own statement (“That record was not mine to have”), he should have missed the previous FT in order to preserve the record for Street. Instead, the record is shared.

But hey, the tale got JBo a lot of good publicity, so there’s that.

Clip below of the missed shot. Definitely not a “line drive” as suggested above. He just left it short. There’s only one person in the world who knows for sure if it was intentional.

It was absolutely an intentional miss.

Agree on your last point, though.

Chris would want you to!
I love the way Banks plays, and I recognize that records are made to be broken. But the Iowa free throw record is in a little different category. Nobody knows what that number would be because of the tragic death of Chris Street. That's why JBo tied it but refused to break it which, IMHO, is one of the most impressive decisions by an Iowa athlete--or any human--that I've witnessed in my decades on the planet. When Cal Ripken Jr. had a similar opportunity to tie rather than break Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak of 2,130, Ripken ignored the fact that Gehrig's record ended only because the Hall of Fame Yankee first baseman contracted ALS, now known as Lou Gehrig's disease. That's why I have no respect for Ripken or his record. To me, Gehrig will always own that record.

And that's why I have the ultimate respect for what JBo did, and that's why I hope that, if Banks' streak continues and he has a chance to break the record, the game situation will permit him to miss so he can tie Street and JBo. But maybe that's just me. I'd love to hear what Ben and Tavion think about it.

It was obvious JBo missed on purpose, and how is it a "false record"? Nobody knows how many free throws Street would have added to the record if death hadn't intervened. That's what makes this record unique, as I explained earlier.

Did you see JBo on that ff? If I remember correctly it looked like a line drive intentional miss to me. Picture anyone?

Oh, it was definitely intentional.

Everything I have seen reported says it was an intentional miss.

From CBS Sports; check it out & watch:

Missing a FT on purpose, without making it look ridiculous, ain't that easy. When guys try to miss at the end of close games, they often make it.

I seem to recall the Streets telling JBo at the time that Chris would have wanted him to break the record.

Tavion should break the record if he gets there.

Do the Streets still attend the games?

One thing I loved about Fran is he had them very much a part of the Hawkeye family (brought them to the locker room on several occasions; they are there annually to present the Chris Street Award; etc)

JBo threw up what looked to be almost be an air ball, to ensure it would be short. And then he pointed to the sky, in Chris' memory. During that moment, and postgame, the Streets knew what JBo had done.

So, what happens when the FT record gets broken? JBo made the point years ago…Chris will never be forgotten. His accomplishments and legacy far exceed any school record for free throws.
Go Tavian… make 50 more in a row!

Make the FT. Chris would’ve gotten in your face bricking a FT on purpose. Also Banks is a tenacious guy, be fitting for a guy like him to break it.

Banks is in a great shooting groove right now..don't change a thing!

Was Chris Street on that streak when he died?

If his record is broken by banks does it diminish his contribution to Iowa bb in any fans eyes?
Hell no.
Yes, Street's streak was still going at that point. If I recall, he went 2-2 at the line @Duke to extend his streak to 34, in his final game.
