Yes but what fanbases think and what the evidence is showing is different. You can think you got bad calls, but did you? Kentucky fans can show a long line of really bad calls going back generations and screw jobs called out by decades of fans. Everyone isn’t making it up. And I can point to direct evidence. Being in a field where it’s imperative, I do my best to avoid my biases and look objectively at what is in front of me. There are times when I call it what it is even when it doesn’t benefit.
There isn’t a doubt that UK does not get the same whistle as Duke and Kansas and UNC get in their house. That is objective truth. Guys like Wilbon don’t hate Unc and Duke, he hates Kentucky. Bilas doesn’t miss obvious fouls calling Duke and UNC games. Guys like Goodman don’t rail against Kansas for decades. Dick Vitale didn’t tell Patterson to go to UK on national TV. Greenburg isn’t hating on Duke UNC or Kansas. It’s all negative kentucky slants. The evidence is overwhelming.
Kentucky has dominated this sport since the beginning and absolutely manhandled this conference. No other program is like that. It’s a southern program in a northeastern sport where pride is abundant. No other program is like that. We’ve had coaches that are hated nationally. No other program has had that to this level. There are reasons why we say this, there are reasons for the hate / bad officiating, and they are valid.
I'll add to that as proof of the bias- how are coaches treated in the national media once they are UK coaches compared to before and afterward?
Cal was celebrated even while investigated, until he became UKs coach. Then he was evil incarnate and his past (unproven) indiscretions were highlighted. As soon as he LEFT for Arkansas, the UK fanbase was demonized.
Tubby wasn't celebrated for winning the 98 title until after it was VERY clear he wasn't going to win one here again. He ALSO LEFT of his own accord, after unethically taking a million dollar longevity bonus when he had already accepted a job at Minnesota, and yet the fanbase was demonized. Then he was celebrated at his new programs in turn.
Kentucky fans refuse to believe it because they are mostly kind people that want to believe the best in people, but not being from here it is easy to see. Kentucky was and is the scapegoat for the racists of both the south and the north. They integrated the SEC. They took away the stigma the northern schools and broadcasters leaned upon. They defused the drama bomb the networks and papers used to sell the matchups.
Because many if them were racists themselves, they had no one else at which to point the finger.
This is not my theory, but someone else's. Yet I know it's true. KENTUCKY is branded as THE backwoods, "Deliverance" type of state. It always will be so that the wretched of the rest of the country will always have a finger to point away from their own wretchedness. Their own weaknesses and poor areas are not to be looked upon. Don't even discuss their racism.
"Look at UK."
"Don't look at the academic scandal at UNC. Don't look at the sexual abuse at Penn State and Michigan State. Don't look at the scandals swept under the rug when coaches "had heart issues" during investigations, or when they refused to turn over financial records as private institutions. Don't look at the murders. Don't look at the drugs and drug dealers caught with performance enhancing drugs. Don't look at the decade of buying titles by paying players more than they would make as NBA rookies. LOOK AT UK and believe whatever we tell you to think, please!!"
They hate the passion of the fans. They hate the loyalty. They hate the arena and the name on it, because he helped take away their other scapegoats. Saw it from year one of living here. Just took me a while to realize what it was.
