Very hard to win any game when you play that horrible a first half and it primarily had to do with Rutgers and not Wisconsin. We had 7 mindless turnovers that they turned into 14 points and they had 7 second chance points when they rarely missed but got a damn offensive rebound. That is 21 points of their 22 point halftime lead.

The rest of it was Pike ‘s ridiculous mantra to have a foot in the paint on help defense and every single time our weak side can never recover for the kick out 3 . They shot wide open 3’s with no one close enough to even get a hand up . Our guys are not smart enough to recover to the wing to close out so they listen to the bad coaching to a fault.
The other major problem was the horrible defense on Boyd. No matter how matter times the announcer Sean Morris , who knows what he is talking about, said you cannot let him go left , Rutgers and in particular JMike let him go left. We gave up 32 points to him which cost us the chance for a comeback. JMike ‘s defense and powers defense guarding him was pathetically bad. Plus if you breathed on him too hard he was going to the line where he hit 14/15.
Francis was terrible in the first half trying real hard to get his shots up and his 0-6 was brutal to go along with terrible defense. Thankfully he hit a layup 5 minutes into the second half to get him going a little . But the rest of the team seemed to move the ball well except Francis , then he had the pick 6 turnover during the comeback, followed by allowing an open 3. Brutal. He tried to play hero ball on a number of possessions down the stretch that killed us. The ball was moving well so no need for his play today.
JMike was more offensive today and it was a welcome sight. If JMike is going to let the other team’s guard score at will , he has to score more and 14 points today was a good start. One of his 3’s was on an excellent sequence where the extra pass was made to him.
Buchanan was a little too passive today. It is a fine line , if he gets sped up , he can turn it over but not a king hurts the offense as well. Couple of putbacks on the offensive glass that got swatted if he got fouled hurt. He missed 2 foul shots down 11 that would have gotten it to 9 and we got a stop and score on the next possessions so it to 7 so could have gotten it to 5 if he made them with plenty of time. Then he missed 2 more with about 2 minutes left.
Manny played real well today especially rebounding in the second half , a like offense and good defense and for some reason that will escape me Pike took him out with 5:15 left when we were down 9 or 10. Terrible damn sub. We also went inside out with him a number of times in the second half that resulted in a kick out , a swing pass and a knocked down 3. It was nice to see and I am scratching my head asking where has that been all year.
Powers and Zrno , I am going to lump together. If we got them good looks , they should knock down shots. Now Zrno was 0-6 against Northwestern but not today 5/9. Powers can drive and hit the mid range. When they are on the court , either one with Francis , it makes the defense choose and you are putting pressure on the defense. . That is why I have advocated for their continued time because we are hard pressed for offense. Although Powers struggled defensively today , both have tried hard to be serviceable defensively.
Dylan ‘s fog, loss of confidence , ? Has really hurt us. If we had a productive Grant today we might have pulled off the comeback. Pike has to do more to put him in offensive sets to succeed .
Dorsch and Nwuili gave you some offense and decent defense but need more . Posting Nwuili will be worth a shot. Dorsch developing a drop step would really help.
No moral victories but this game in my opinion was lost by Rutgers instead of won by Wisconsin. When the turnovers stopped , the second chance points stopped and we guarded the 3 point line good things happened . Cutting it from 26-7 with plenty of time and then not guarding Boyd’s left hand , not hitting foul shots or the putbacks at the rim cost us the chance for the full comeback.
