NW game was a slog, but it's a W

Ava Heiden played well, other than that, last night was an awful, ugly, miserable slog for the Hawkeyes. Just about the only good thing about it was that the Hawkeyes, a 28-point favorite, managed to hang on and get the win. Iowa had something like 20 turnovers, and most were unforced, lazy, ill-advised, middle-school passes along with a few dribbling violations and a couple of travels . . . And there was never any rhythm to the game because, combined with all the turnovers, it seemed like a whistle blew every five seconds.

Iowa's shooting wasn't good, and Hannah had one of the worst games of her career with medicore FT shooting and missing more bunnies than Elmer Fudd (look it up).

After reading the game story, I see that Chit-Chat was ill and had a fever. That explains a lot. That's one tough little lady. The Hawkeyes would be in big trouble without her. I hope her luck improves and she can stay healthy the rest of her career, because she is the glue, and she can do so many things. And, of course, getting Kylie Feuerbach back would be a big help too.

But as we know, it's a long season, and every night is a challenge, so there are likely to be a few clunkers. This was definitely one of them, so take the win and show some dramatic improvement on Sunday. But it is concerning that this team has had turnover problems all year. The lazy passes have been a consistent issue, so I hope Jan and the coaching staff can come up with some answers. Unforced errors cannot continue if the Hawkeyes are to realize their full potential. Iowa is making it far more difficult than it needs to be with so many self-inflicted wounds. If the pass isn't there, work it around until it is, or just go ahead and shoot it. And when you do pass, go meet the ball, throw it with something on it, and don't forget the bounce pass.

BTW: The NW "wild" theme, featuring cowboy hats and matching outfits for "Chicago's Big Ten Team," seemed a little weird to me, FWIW.

Live in Chicago suburbs, fist time to see Hawkeyes this year. Hawkeyes had some difficulty putting it together, but very impressed with team talent and atheletism. These kids are so young, they will only get better! Unfortunate that only five can play at-a-time. Liked (!) Callie Levin, quality minutes off the bench, has a mature game. Ava Heiden, great hands, a ballerina in the paint. Emely Rodriguez grey suited did not play; stop the board's recent cynicism. Rodriguez very talented and will be fine. Big crowd for Northwestern Wildcats' Welsh Ryan. 'Cowgirl' hats-off to Hawkeye fans, they know how to bring it; literally and figuratively.

Hannah’s inability to even attempt a wide open perimeter shot has put a significant cap on this team’s ceiling.
Opponents dare her to shoot too, they sag off her hoping she'll take the open shot.

Hannah's best attribute is her hustle; she's a gamer and works very hard we just need to use her in that role only.

I kinda get the feeling this might be a similar situation to Owen Freeman. I know back injuries can linger and be a pain but hasn't she been day to day for like 6 weeks?

I'm wondering if she will ever come back and is just using this for medical redshirt purposes? That way when she transfers, she can have 3 years left somewhere else. I hope she plays and I think we could use her but not sure we see her again the rest of the year.

We need more ball handlers. Right now Chit Chat is the only one with good ball handling ability. Teams play physical and tight man to man defense on us and we can’t handle the ball pressure.

Most of the turnovers the other night weren't related to ball handling. Lazy ill advised passes were number one. There were very few if any steals resulting from NW pressuring the ball handler that I can recall. Stremlow had a careless double dribble from carrying the ball that's almost never called. The rest I think were traveling and the like.

Stremlow is usually a very reliable number 2 with the ball besides Chit Chat. She just had a bad game the other night. However, when you then have Heiden, Stuelke and McCabe in the game as the other 3 they basically can't handle the ball. While McCabe has had a nice season she really still can't put the ball on the floor as the 3rd guard which really puts pressure on the other 2 guards.

I don't disagree with any of this necessarily, but I don't think it's as dire as you and others are making it out to be. McCabe isn't a primary ball handler but her turnover rate is the best on the team. Feuhrbach is very low as well.

If this would happen to be the case she needs to be off the team. There's no reason for her to be on the bench or with the team. It's time for Jan to say what's really going on imo.
