any suggestions? I've never been. The plan is to go to Oahu and to the Big Island. Beyond visiting Pearl Harbor on Oahu, and Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, we really haven't locked in any other destinations, though I think we're going to limit ourselves to just those two islands.
Well we just did O’ahu kinda relaxed and only did two days of excursions and one day golfing. North shore and pearl. Rest was just beach time. If you are doing multiple island plan accordingly as we looked into it but it’s a full day event to try and hop if staying say on Oahu as your home base. Would say if doing an Oahu circle isalnd tour isn’t bad. Would like to have it more informative than tourist trap shopping. Being history guy it was ok. But like the dole plantation there wasn’t enough time to do that properly in my opinion. Watch chief of war before you come out.

Must do Pearl. You can spend a whole day there we did the half day and I need to go back to do the aviation museum and the mighty mo tour

Step, you should include the rest of our Hispanic brothers, and drive to Panama, short flight in Colombia, and down into Venezuela, floating the Orinoco River on the way to the coastal fishing communities of Venezuela.

A trip around the big island recommended. The black sand beach on the a south coast. Great coffee plantation. We went out whaling, whale watching actually.
On Oahu the walk on the north west shore. We hiked out to the end of a penninsula to watch the albatross. Long walk but worth the views and sites.

Following last nights activities,
I'm planning a visit to our newly acquired 51st State, Venezuela.

Funny that earlier today I was remembering a business trip to Puerto Ordaz to perform structural inspections at the Orinoco Mining Company dock facility. OMC was a subsidiary of USSteel.

That facility was "acquired" by the government back in the late 70s, everything except an experimental process facility to convert iron ore fines into iron briquettes, trying to eliminate the blast furnace from the steel making process. USS pulled out of the project immediately before the nationalization of the business.

Had an enjoyable couple of weeks out in the "country" and spent a night in Caracas, listening to the motorcycles every time the traffic light turned green.

That would be AWESOME. Just not sure I can take enough consecutive vacation days to do it justice.

Have you done this?
No, but I have spent a lot of time in Iceland the past few years and know a lot of people who fly from the US to Europe through Reykjavik. My problem with that is that I’d want to spend all my time in Iceland!

A(nother) weird thing to know about your buddy LionJim. He loves roundabouts.
Me too. Circles requiring proper knowledge and respect for the rules of the road.

The only exceptions I've experienced are Cairo Egypt and Tripoli Libya where it's customary to bump the car next to you occupying the space in the circle you desire.

I haven’t been back there since I got married 40 years ago. All of NE Ohio and the neighboring Western PA are pretty much ghost towns. Went back to Warren (Ohio) for my 35th HS class reunion years ago and it is unbelievable. Plazas that were thriving are now boarded up. All the manufacturing/steel jobs are gone. There have been 15 mill/plant closures. The Eastwood Mall about 10 minutes from my old house in Howland Township is still around, which surprises me. The main businesses in Warren are the hospitals and Covelli Enterprises (family friends).

As this is a travel thread, I just can’t go back there anymore. It is too heartbreaking. Most of my friends and family friends are long gone and my few relatives that are still in the area live in Poland, Ohio.
Hermitage is actually doing quite well. Not the same from the 60's and 70's. It's not depressing.

Have a few thoughts on what to do this year.....and hoping to steal other people's ideas ;)

1. Going to Red Rocks in Colorado in June to see Brit Floyd at Red Rocks. Always wanted to go to Red Rocks. Will make it into a M/C trip aw well - rent a MC at Denver Airport and then hit up some good mountain roads in the Rockies.
2. Whenever the PSU/Washington game is scheduled, I am going to go to Seattle for the game. That will leave just Autzen for my Big 10 Road Trips.
3. Planning another M/C trip, probably in August or early Sept to Maine. Will try to get in a round at Sunday River Resort (luckily they rent clubs so I don't have to ship mine).
4. Since I worked through Christmas on a project, will probably look to do some quick trip to Caribbean in late Jan/early Feb.

edit
5. May do a Family Pub Crawl in either NYC or London. Since I have relatives throughout the world either NYC or London would make for a good meeting place for my boogie-*** family. 😏

Whatcha got planned for 2026?
Prague…one of the world’s most underrated gems. Want to get back to as many places in Europe before they are overrun.

Ultimately you don’t need to over complicate Oahu. Pearl and north shore. Remember, Honolulu is a city with all that entails.

I’ve not been to big island, but have been to Kauai, which is unbelievable in its variety.

We just did a Trafalgar tour of Germany, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Czech Republic Summer 2025. Prague was awesome. Warsaw is now an upcoming city with new construction everywhere.

Cool. I have been tempted by a Celebrity Cruise on one of newest ships, and that is newest. Leaning towards something different if we do a cruise.

I have lots of backpacking trips planned for 2026:

Ouachita Trail (OK/AR)
Tahoe Rim Trail (CA/NV
Susquehannock Trail (PA)

Also, biking the C&O Canal, family summer vacation in Lake Placid.
I know of a nice big airB&B in LP about a mile from the Ski Jump complex should you be shopping for a place … highly recommended

One of the biggest eye-openers when I was in Honolulu the first time was the amount of homeless. It was like Krzyzewskiville with all the tents and camping out. But I guess if you're going to be homeless, Hawaii is decent for the weather.

When I was in Maui a couple of months before the fire, there were a lot of homeless around, mainly living at the shoreline parking areas.

Since I already mentioned my 2026 plans a lot earlier in this thread, I already have my 2027 plans in the works. Danube river cruise and Swiss train excursion.

Trip to Spain to include stays in Barcelona, Costa Brava and Madrid.
Also, ymmv but the Prado in Madrid is a superb art museum, the best I’ve seen. Rick Steves has a museum guidebook, takes you through the best of the stuff. I’ve learned not to go on and on about art (people’s eyes start to glaze over) but if you want some specifics, lmk.

I’m not fancy like many of you. If I can sneak away to coastal Oregon to go fly fishing for 4 days I’ll be happy. If I can get a second trip of the same duration for trout or steelhead it’ll be a great year. When I’m dead they’ll just stand around saying I was an ******* despite putting my late-life family first.

Family doing Universal for 5-ish days next month, mostly because “everybody” thinks we should. Wife-figure’s side is like that - they really don’t know why they do what they do. Any attempt to teach them how to optimize/make better decisions just makes them glaze over.
