Ben Kueter, class of 2023, will join the team next Spring. He was a rare dual sport signee. Recruited as a LB, speculation is that he adds weight and moves to DE. Even so (if so), Ben has a lot of ground to make up. Nevertheless, wrestling skills are a big plus on the LOS if that is his destination. I hope he can make a quick transition in any event.

I just love Free Agency in CFB... Thanks J-Bo!!!
You mean thanks NCAA. That organization has ruined college sports by refusing to accept reality. J-Bo and the others who pushed for NIL were simply asking for a share of the wealth that was making everyone else rich--networks, bowl officials, coaches, NCAA folks--except the players who make it all possible. Those players NEVER imagined the situation that currently exists. They never dreamed of being paid millions. They just wanted a share of the money from jersey sales and the like--tens of thousands for the most popular players.

Had the NCAA been rational and fair, it would have created a sensible system that would have granted players the right to make money from their talents, like the kids in the marching band or drama or writing or any other university outlet. Instead, they hypocritically refused, and here we are. It's a mess, but the players didn't make it. The NCAA did.

Well, what the NCAA did was essentially got salty about the whole deal and went "harumph you want to get paid, fine....no more rules!"

And just let everyone do what they wanted and sat back and are watching the carnage unfold, thinking that eventually they'll come begging back to the NCAA to fix it, and the NCAA has made it clear, that while they absolutely want the schools to groveling back to them.............their answer will be 'no', and they'll do it with a callous smile on their face.

This is the world/reality that the NCAA thinks they're living in.

The fact is, nobody has any intention of going back to the NCAA for their help.

To think that with a roster of approximately 100 people, we're not going to lose some of those would be naive. You got that many kids out there thinking they're going to become millionaires, or could become millionaires, via the portal. Big money replaces loyalty in a lot of cases. The Hawks are not immune from that. Hopefully we don't have too many more, or at least nobody that's an impact player. Brian Allen probably would have played a lot of football for us next year.

If he moves to DE, he will see the field. He's not a B1G linebacker. Get up to 265 lb. and wreak havoc in backfield with hand fighting, balance, explosion, and quickness. DE with him and Epenesa on the edges would be nice.

He was a former 4 start recruit but his development was delayed by several injuries. He never beat out the older guys just ahead of him (Hurkett, Llewellyn). Now maybe he's being surpassed by younger guys? Maybe he wants a situation with more guaranteed snaps for his final college season?

LOL! Seems like you forgot the part about Kueter also being a DI All-American in Wrestling. That's not a MYTH, nor is it easy and he most definitely earned it.

How much of your good money did you lose when Kueter was a NATIONAL Butkus Award Finalist? Which I believe makes him the only one on the Iowa roster with that distinction.

But yeah, Football is hard, so hard he's no longer an athlete and forgot how to play it. 😂

Funny how people used to sing the praises of High School Wrestling studs on the Football Team, guys like Matt Roth, Austin Blythe and many others. But now that we have one that actually Wrestled in College and is an honest to goodness All-American, his Football talent suddenly disappeared. It's laughable. And an Iowa City High kid to boot. SMDH

Ben Kueter's full Hawkeye story is yet to be determined. I wouldn't get too careless with my "good money" betting against a guy with a World Championship mindset, which he is indeed already a World Champion as well. Not many of them around.

TLDR, I’ll bet good money on it. He should stick with wrestling.

I don’t like that Iowa is starting to lose guys. Generally Kirk keeps them.

Sure you will. He'll be good at whatever he decides to do IF he can stay healthy, you can take that to the bank.......(which will be convenient as you withdraw "good money" to pay off your bet). 😂

The “will never play one down from the line of scrimmage” type of bet smells like a claim from someone with a personal axe to grind. It makes no sense when you take into account that Kirk made an exception to sign him to a football scholarship which allowed him to participate in both sports simultaneously. Ferentz and Parker obviously saw exceptional football talent that you have summarily disregarded for no apparent reason. Would Parker welcome Kueter back under scholarship if he did not believe he can contribute on defense?

Reality is going to lose guys but it’s question of who we lose. Kirk has had Iowa low end of portal players lost past few years. And last few years haven’t seen too many impact guys go. Going to see guys leave buried on depth chart like TE Hoffman last year passed up by Vonnahme and Burt in his same class already. We lost Justin Jacob but ended up as a win because we replaced him with nick jackson who was great and Jacobs injured a lot with Oregon.

So far Allen one loss that was surprising and hurts as projected starter and depth at DE. Loved Jaz but with our rb room with moulten, McNeil and X we should be ok.

It would be interesting to know his reason for leaving.
To the fans, it seems like he was in line to start next year and why would a guy leave when it's finally his turn to start?
Likely reasons:
A) Doesn't like it here.
B) Is looking for better pay somewhere else.
C) Is concerned about younger players getting that starting spot.
D) Other/ Family reasons

What is the truth?

I have no info of this being the case, but I’ve seen it speculated, and it makes as much sense as anything.

By my estimation, we’ve only lost 3 or 4 starter quality players thus far. Jacobs, Charlie Jones, Dakin and Allen. Is there anyone else I’m missing? I’d think 90-95% of teams would take this track record.

I remember on the Vandeberg podcast they talked about Brian Allen being very talkative on the field during games.

While Dakin was a starter, during the season, I felt like we should go into the portal anyway to find someone better. He wasn’t very good this year.

Nestor and Keagan Johnson others I can remember. And Proctor if you count him. Really though, Jacobs and Charlie Jones were well above anyone else and we replaced Jacobs just fine.

I have no axe to grind, it is a similar situation to Becht. He had a better future in baseball than football. Personally having seen him in high school, I would have thought him to be a Jack Campbell clone. He will be a tweener on the Dline, and has no future at the LB position given the current depth. It is a situation IMO where the kid should stick with wrestling, his accolades speak for themselves on the wrestling mat.

Kirk obviously tries to recruit a certain player disposition (put in the work, learn from the guys ahead of you, earn your spot). A majority of his guys align to this approach, but you can't nail every one. and obviously there are exceptions when younger guys are simply the best option

His season as a whole was underwhelming especially compared to hype he received through spring and fall practice. Having said that his two best games probably came in last 2 so he might be turning corner and Michigan State will get closer to what he was expected to be. I'd rather have him than not but he hasn't been a difference maker up to this point.
