An official visit to your own school.
It doesn’t end until some system or guardrails are put in place. But I’m repeatedly told here that there is no appetite for that on behalf of the players. If that’s the case, there’s no interest on my behalf either. This is likely my last year with season tickets in football and basketball after 28 years. It’s a shame as I always felt the players should get a piece of the pie, but this non-system is ridiculous.
The piece of the pie was supposed to be free tuition, room and board, meals, training facilities, athlete perks, etc. College football and basketball will collapse at some point with the survivors becoming minor league developmental programs with college brands attached.
A couple of options I read about. One is to make them employees and sign contracts (to limit transfers). The other is to allow 1 free transfer and then make the athlete sit out for future transfers (which I like). At the end of the day this is supposed to be college and pursue a degree. Impossible to get a degrees when you transfer every year.
As Pete said, I am a 35+ year football season ticket holder and donor. My time is coming to an end unless something changes. Feels like I just keep the tickets to keep the tailgate going at this point.

Agree with all the above. I'm all for players getting a share of revenue directly from the school, not the pockets of fans. There's nothing wrong with them being paid but now we're all held hostage by a collection of kids, who in any normal environment, would right now be fetching us coffee at our jobs. However, instead now we have to donate our hard earned cash to these kids who live in some alternate universe where they can do whatever the eff they want with no consequences. Then, after they do things like this, everyone is supposed to act like it's completely okay to their face but once they walk out the door we all know how much of a joke they're making our beloved college sports become.

Just give them contracts and make them employees already. Then at least they're learning how the real world works along the way, between negotiations, contractual obligations, and possible unionization, as opposed to this nonsense we have now.

Collective bargaining is the only solution that will hold up in courts, and has been demonstrated in numerous real world examples called professional sports.
Things like this make mind mind instantly think that he is not only looking for the best possible NIL deal but doing a R. Gary tour with his Mom having her purse wide open just to even get a visit.
Waiting for the NFL practice squad player that still had one year of eligibility left to enter the transfer portal. We are on the edge of that right now. Just a matter of time.
All of the above. I fear my days as a big fan of CFB and CBB are numbered. No more athletes fighting for my alma mater. No more loyalty by athletes to the school that helped my career success. When they are introduced at an NFL game, which school do they credit? Will schools still require attending classes? Do these athletes have any interest in getting a degree? In what, a BA in "negotiating NIL via the transfer portal"??
when you are jumping from school to school every year it's unlikely you will end up with a degree.
Not every school accepts credits/classes from other schools. Basically, they are playing a sport and collecting credits in the hopes they get to go pro....and if they don't all they have is a bunch of credits and no diploma to hang on a wall.
Maybe I should put my fandom up for sale. Is there an SEC team out there willing to pay me to root for them?

The real shame is the true student athlete who does earn their way onto their favorite school for both an education and playing sports at a high level. And there are still a lot of these kids out there. But now- our 4.0 Student athletes that have worked their way into being a very good starter- can easily lose it all to an incoming NIL star who doesn't give a damn about education or school.
At Rutgers over the years, and even now, we have been spoiled by kids who do want a Rutgers Education as well. And we have had plenty of players here that have reached the NFL as well as earn their degree.
The current College model of NIL and Portal- just sucks. And for more than just fans.
I'm planning to move to NC in 2027. This is going to be my last season for MBB Tix & next fall will be my last for football.
I will offer my fandom to coastal Carolina University and make the 1.5 hour trip for all home games & a bunch of their away games.
All I ask is that they pay for my gas
There has been a ton of money flying around in recent years that they weren’t benefiting from. Do I agree with what’s happening now and the degree to which it’s happening? No. Someone needs to step up and have a vision here to deal with this. Sort of like the early days of the NFL with Bert Bell and Pete Rozelle. It’s a critical time but all does not have to be lost.
What I find interesting is you never hear about academically ineligible players anymore. There was a time when a couple of big time players would fail out or lose eligibility. With many athletes doing all their classes online from dorms and dedicated tutors handling their homework for them the system is probably beyond repair. Come on, How can ALL of these players stay academically eligible?
The Ivys have it right although I have to believe at some point they will realize that fully funding every sport is a rounding error compared to their endowments. Ivys could rule college sports if they felt like it.
College football and basketball are just trash right now. Hard to be interested in either.
I agree the portal is out of control. Thought this was interesting from Quinn Ewers, the former UT QB. Perhaps a more mature perspective.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. The difference is that if you donate the same amount to CCU, you are treated like the Towers at RU.
Well, 50 yard line season tickets are $200 each, including the student fund fee...and it looks like parking is somewhere around $70 for the season....
FBS fandom is going to save me a ton of money ...

It used to take weeks (or in Rutgers cases months-lol) for transfers to get cleared and course credits approved not only by the clearinghouse but by the new college. Who here didn’t know of someone who had issues transferring credits from a prior school, community college or JUCO??
it just doesn’t pass the smell test anymore.
My kids went to G5 schools and like any parent I began to follow the teams of the schools they were attending. 15-20 years on I find it more fun now to follow those teams than what’s become of P4 athletics. Not that G5 hasn’t been caught in the hurricane (see JMU) but it’s not as pervasive.
I’m going to continue my Rutgers fandom but really leaning toward getting season tickets to the University of Delaware. Only 15 mins from my house. They had a fun team this year.
It’s going back a while but I knew D1 athletes that failed a few classes and couldn’t play. Some left school to clean up their GPA. Some came back eventually. Some disappeared forever. Are the academic eligibility rules gone? Ivy League athletes are really impressive. They get no academic support and in most instances train/compete just as hard as P4 schools.
The only way to make sense of the current colllege sports landscape is that NCAA officials are either corrupt, incompetent, or both. Top NCAA leaders make 7 figures. How can they be this bad at their jobs and still remain employed.

under schiano we HAD to do the work in school , he supported with tutors but we had high academic standards.
Maybe you'll be able to root on RU baseball. They've played at CCU (a national power btw) a couple times over the past several years.
Some great golf a hoot and a holler east of CCU on hwy 501 at Myrtle Beach National and Legends.
MrScrew will be happy about the golf. Our plan is to relocate outside of Wilmington and there's a lot of golf around there too.
Yeah, played a number of times at courses between the NC/SC state line and Wilmington. An old golf buddy recently bought a home along the coast west of Wilmington. Going to be the retirement home when it's time.
Yup. I was a hs coach back during Greg's first seasons at RU. Mike Miello gave us a tour of the new weight room and football facility and the first thing he showed us was the academic support room in the facility. He stressed the importance Greg placed on academics and his passion for every kid to get a degree. Mike also pointed out the obvious, it didn't make any sense to devote time and money recruiting a player, signing him, and then letting him flunk out because you didn't give him the support and guidance he needed to succeed.
This is how it should be. No way schools are playing by the rules if EVERYONE at P4 schools are academically eligible if nothing else based on the demands of being a student. You hear these players talk about training/preparing from 5:30 AM - 6:00 PM. When the hell are they taking classes? Bet it’s now gone from online classes in dorm rooms to a library of online recordings of classes.
