So watching the Chiefs vs Broncos game and Herbstreit says he could certainly understand Kelsey "not being mentally engaged" in playing right now with the Chiefs being out of the playoffs. Wait, what? Now not only there's no expectation of professionalism, but the dude's making 35 MIllion THIS season, and theres no reason to expect he'd still be all in? Why do we watch? Why should we care? Glad I didn't drop hundreds of dollars on tickets and parking and everything else to see the mega wealthy go thru the motions.
I guess even the $$$ doesn't matter now.

That wasn't really my point. The point is, (according to the guy calling the game) theres no reason to expect that one of your teams leaders and highest paid players should "be all in" since they aren't getting back to the Super bowl. Remember, perception becomes reality.

So given your scenario it makes no difference what your paying a guy, or that he's one of the key leaders on your team, it should be ok for him to check out when their out of the playoff hunt? After how many losses would it be okay for guys making 30-50 million $ a year to start mailing it in? And no one can see why we have such a problem with paying players this kind of monopoly money to play a game? Really? At some point even the money doesn't matter. Its like its not even real. Who cares at some point?
It’s not necessarily “Ok” but based off what you said above, sounds like Herb was simply saying he understands the reality of Kelce maybe “not being engaged” due to the season they’ve had.
Even though their season isn’t literally over, their season is over i.e. they didn’t meet expectations and they aren’t playing for anything meaningful.
The reality is that it makes sense, it’s normal, for a guy or guys to be a bit “checked out” now if you’re a Chief or a Titan or a Jet or a Raider etc etc etc…
Then bench him and put in someone who wants to win!!!

I think he explained it. It's the guy's job, and he's getting paid $35 million this season to do that job. Tickets cost the same even though the playoffs are out of the picture. Concessions cost the same. Parking costs the same. Hotel rooms cost the same. And as the poster said, he's a professional athlete. He has a duty, a responsibility--ethically and contractually--to play hard and do his best at all times.
Hell, go down to any Y or rec center and watch the intensity of the guys playing pick-up basketball games. They'll be sore tomorrow. They aren't getting paid a dime to play. But they're competitors, so they play hard, even if there are no playoffs on the line.
If Kelce and his team don't wanna play anymore, just forfeit. Give a percentage of your paycheck back, and don't fleece the fans who pay good money to watch professional football, not some millionaires going through the motions.

It’s his job. The job is also to make the playoffs or even the Super Bowl, especially as a Kansas City Chief considering their several-season run of dominance.
And forfeit?? Step back into the realm of “Reality” b/c obviously that’s not an option.
So, seeing as how we’re back to reality and understanding that we’re human beings, failure to meet expectations naturally causes some folks to be bummed and pouty, regardless of the size of the paycheck. I’m sure even the Hunt family and other major stakeholders have also lost a lotta care and motivation as well.
The season is a total bust for KC. As a whole they have nothing to play for in 2025 and are now focusing on the 2026 draft class.

I don't think Travis Kelce is the mail it in type. Not a Chiefs fan, but I think this guy gives a damn when he steps on the field.
I'm a chiefs fan and everything is ok with me. His salary, his effort or lack there of. I signed off many, many weeks ago on the chiefs.
Look I get it. My point was more of a generalization of where we are now in the sports and "entertainment" biz. It all kind of ties together with many other topics here that we discuss. Players going from team to team. Players opting out of games, (and not just "meaningless" bowl games either) before the seasons over. A few years ago one of the Bosa brothers was injured mid season and although he could have been back for whatever playoff game they'd be in he announced he was going to focus instead on training for the combine. Its sad, very sad......
I know thats become everybodys joke of the day, but frankly he doesn't need any of the queens money. Besides the 100's of millions he's made from the Chiefs, he and Jason signed that 100Million $ deal for their podcast. He has other deals, and the restaurant he and PM just opened. It would be darn interesting to see the paperwork involved in his and Taylors prenup though, I'll give you that.
College sports are gross; the same can be said about pro sports.
The Chiefs' owner is worth $25B. Nevertheless, they are getting a ton of public help for these 2 items:
* $3 billion--cost for the new domed stadium in Kansas.
* $300 million--cost for the new training facility in Olathe, Kansas.

After reading through the 33-page term sheet for the Chiefs' new stadium in Kansas, I think it's one of the most lopsided stadium deals in NFL history.
Kansas is essentially giving the Chiefs $3 billion (stadium funding + mixed-use development funding + tax incentives), yet getting virtually nothing in return.
The Chiefs get to keep 100% of the revenue from all stadium activities, including ticket sales, concessions, sponsorships, naming rights deals, personal seat licenses, and more. That applies to NFL games and all other events (concerts, basketball games, etc.).
Kansas will own the stadium, with the Chiefs paying $7 million in rent annually. But that money doesn't go back to the state; it goes into an account the Chiefs can use for renovations, repairs, and operational expenses. That means the Chiefs can use their own rent money to hire stadium security, parking staff, and concession vendors throughout the season.
I know Kansas had to offer a great deal to get the Chiefs to leave Arrowhead, but this is worse than I expected.
