Is Wallace the Head Coach In Waiting (HCIW) based on a handshake deal with Beth Goetz?

I feel like LeVar wouldn't leave if he thought he still had a shot at the big chair.

Thoughts?
I think this is a realistic possibility. I also think LeVar reached his ceiling in the program as it is. Im okay with him getting more experience there for a little while and then coming back to be DC when Phil retires.

If Gary were AD absolutely. Good OL boys club and handshake deals to the detriment of the program.

Not with Beth. Nothing is set in stone.

I still remember a month ago during bye week Beth sat in for KF on his weekly show for a couple of segments. Gary Dolphin while she was sitting there said “ we have associate coach Seth Wallace joining later. Hope he never leaves Iowa and becomes head coach here.” Beth’s look is as hilarious. Like “listen old fart you and your good old boys don’t run the program any longer.”

Yes, if KF is calling the shots..........when the time comes, I'd expect a late summer departure to force the U's hand into hiring 'someone' on staff......
But KF isn't calling the shots. If something like that happens, then Wallace might be HC but he'd be slapped with an interim tag pending his and the team's performance over the course of the year.

I think KF wants to pull the 'ol hey I'm retired and an Icon you should hire this guy card. I don't think Beth will do it. Even if she did hire Wallace I'd almost guarantee she still does a thorough search.

Beth is the bomb as an athletic director. No doubt she has a list of candidates for the next head coach, and Seth's name may be on it. But there will likely be several other names as well.

It will be her most important hire to that point. She is way too smart to do anything except hire the guy she thinks will be the best coach.

No one on KF's staff should be the next head coach at Iowa. A new perspective, new ideas are needed. Beth won't let KF or anyone else hold the program hostage. She was brought in to hire the next men's basketball coach and football coach. She's already hired a women's basketball coach and fired KF's handpicked QB coach and OC, who also happened to be his son. Beth is the AD, and every indication is that she'll do her job with no interference from anyone. Her two basketball hires look great, and I expect the football hire will as well.

While she did in fact hire a new womens basketball coach, there was NO search for that one, she simply turned it over to the associate HC already in place. Seth Wallace also holds that Assoc HC by the way.

I read Beth quoted at one point as saying the womens BB hire was easy. She had the right coach for the position already on the staff. Can't draw any inferences to football based on that.

Still hoping there's a clean break and the coaching search focuses on the best possible candidate, regardless of previous ties to the program. Bonus points if the new staff still keeps some of the same "identity", but I don't think having previous affiliation with the program should be required.

Yes, as soon as kirk signs his retirement papers then he has nothing much to say about the new head coach unless Beth asks him for input. As someone else said and I have said many times because I have heard top people say it, "she always has a list of head coaches in case she needs to do a hire."

I'm not, I'm just saying we're all just speculating on what she'll do. Maybe Beth likes Wallace (who also holds the title of Assoc HC currently), and she gives him a shot or at least gives him a season as interim. We'll see when we get there.

Precisely. Have posted before that I like Wallace. He impressed me the one game he coached a couple seasons back when Kirk had the one game suspension. Seemed very well spoken.

We all have to look at this realistically just like Beth will. No reason to assume he has the inside track. Also no reason to dismiss Wallace because we want someone outside the program.

Lester has HC experience and has Year by Year made the impossible happen, The Iowa offense improved, Both Lester and Wallace are very safe high floor hires that keep the Culture and most of the Staff in place . If You go Outside it better be a Guy who is a Young proven winner who is not a puddle jumper

Nothing has changed since he was named associate HC. After that happened, Levar leaving was only a matter of time. Going to Michigan St doesn't lessen or improve his chances.

As for KFz's influence, I'd think he'll have input. He knows what it takes to win here and will advise Beth (not unlike Hayden advised BB). But he won't be the one making the call.

I love the idea of Seth Wallace I being the next coach at Iowa.
but I hope it's not for another 15 years or more.

does anybody really think Beth Goetz knows more about football and running a football program than Kirk Ferentz?

I’d have no problem with an outsider coming in, taking Iowa to the CFP semis in 3 years, then bolting for Notre Dame. There are a lot of worse situations than that….

No, but she has a different perspective which likely gives her a more objective view when deciding who is best fit to take the job, compared to someone who likely has built up quite a bit of bias throughout his years of relationships in the college football world.

That’s why we have athletic directors.

Yes, Kirk had a choice between Levar and Seth. He chose Seth because he wanted to retain him. I believe he will be our next coach.

Well said, I agree.

I don't think Indiana's athletic director knew how to coach the football team, but he clearly knew the exact qualities needed in a head coach in order to effectively coach the football team.

LeVar is going to get HC experience. That's basically a requirement to be Kirk's successor. Think about it.

I guess , but its not like Kirk is an outlier either. Most of the big schools the football HC/CEO carries a big stick. Do we think Manuel was really "the boss" at Michigan? If so he needs to be fired as well, for all the crap thats been going on in Ann Arbor the last 4 or 5 years.

When KF decides it’s time to hang it up, it wouldn’t shock me if he does it outside of the typical coaching carousel window … most likely in mid-January, when he does his usual post-season evaluations.

If so, it raises the likelihood that we hire a current assistant, as most other candidates (particularly current head coaches) will not be available.
