Do both Dunker and Stephens come back next year?

I didn’t know these guys could get a 5th year as is this because of the Covid extra year as I thought that was over? I got this article from B/R




“Three of Iowa's five selections have completely exhausted their college eligibility, and it is unknown if Beau Stephens or Gennings Dunker will use a fifth-year option.

If Dunker or Stephens decides to move on, Iowa will have to replace three starters on the offensive line (Dunker, Stephens, and Jones) next season.

Replacing any of these five players will be difficult, but the program does have a talented freshman class coming in 2026”

I don't think thats correct. I do think the covid thing is over...Dunker redshirted as a freshman in 2021. And has played in 2022, 23, 24,25. I don't believe the covid exemption is in effect for freshman in the 2021 class.

That’s what I was thinking as well… I think you’re correct on this but hoping we are both wrong

Thank goodness Covid free year fiasco and confusion over who has extra year or not is finally done.

from there we have moved on to juco guys like pavia at Vandy get extra years and now see ole miss qb came from D2 for 3 years petitioning for extra year. And to think decade ago ncaa wouldn’t give Drew ott medical hardship waiver for shortened injury plagued senior year.

Its actually sad that guys like this have access to media and print things when they don't know what they're talking about. Dunker redshirted and played 4 years as an example. Funny too that he made one of those ongoing (and false) slams that Kirk is "stubborn" and doesn't play freshman. He's played lots of frosh if he and his staff think they can contribute, and yes, even on the OLine in cases where they're ready. I wouldn't be shocked to see someone like Parliment in the 2 deeps next season, BUT we appear to have some good depth right now, so we'll see.

And just think a few years ago players were barred from working and from being paid for personal appearances and everything else. Now some are openly paid millions of dollars, and there are virtually no restrictions.

And back in the day, Olympic champion Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest US athletes of all time, a Native American who played in both the NFL and MLB, had his life ruined when he was forced to return his Olympic medals because he took a couple bucks a day for meal money while playing semi-pro baseball. That's one of the saddest chapters in all of US sports.

Yep. My youngest had a pre season NAIA basketball game against Haskell Indian college in Kansas. They have some pretty cool memorabilia of Thorpe and several other native American athletes that played in college.

This wasn't Stevens best year so who knows if he'll get drafted.

Unfortunately, much of what the media puts in print is sad.

What's worse is all the dumbasses that fall for the crap hook, line, and sinker.

Of course when confronted, the media acts as if they make no difference. Why would one have an interest in that career if they honestly don't think their platform makes a difference?

Agreed with the above that those guys should roll into the draft regardless. Dunker will probably be a 2 rounder, I think both Stephens and Jones will go off the board by round 4. The line depth is exciting though, Kade Pieper could be an early entry after next year, Myslinski steps in at C after Jones, Lauck and Dotzler both have experience at the tackle spots. I think the line will be fine.

Dunker will be a guard at next level. Def won't be drafted as a OT

He started out as a guard at Iowa, didn't he? And then moved to tackle out of necessity/injuries? I could be wrong about the reason he went to tackle.

It will be interesting to see how Dunker, Stephens, and Jones do in the league. I don’t think Jones is as good as Tyler Linderbaum and if Colby Connor can play in the league as a rook then Dunk can and possibly Stephens too. It will be interring to see if Stevens gets a shot as a free agent to kick for some team.

We not only had a great freshman class but the backups are very good too. We gonna be fine

Someone on here mentioned Colby Connor or I should say Connor Colby is playing to fill in for injury but this is his chance. He made a roster, now he is playing, he might get a starting gig and a bigger contract someday and win a ring
