Troy Aikman is 'done' funding NIL: 'Didn't even get a thank you'

If you’re a college player who happens to get NIL money from Troy Aikman, please make sure you send a thank you note.

Although, it sounds like aspiring UCLA Bruins and other college football players probably won’t have to worry about it, because according to Aikman, he’s done cutting checks to fund anyone through NIL.

Aikman joined the latest episode of Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, where they began talking about Lane Kiffin leaving Ole Miss for LSU. And after Aikman acknowledged he believes players should have the right to leave a school when a coach does, the Monday Night Football analyst aired his grievances with the transfer portal and NIL.

“There’s gotta be some leadership at the very top that kind of cleans all of this up,” Aikman told Deitsch. “Starting with players that accept money. There’s gotta be some accountability and responsibility on their behalf, to have to stick to a program.

“I gave money to a kid, I won’t mention who. I’ve done it one time at UCLA, never met the young man. He was there a year, he left after the year. I wrote a sizable check, and he went to another school. I didn’t even get so much as a thank you note. So, it’s one of those deals, to where I’m done with NIL. I want to see UCLA be successful, but I’m done with it.”
more

It’s easy to be pro-player empowerment as a fan. Players should be able to go from one school to another without sitting a season, just as coaches can and always have. And players should be able to profit off their name, image and likeness just as college football does and always has. But you can also understand Aikman being frustrated from his perspective as someone who was funding one of those players and got nothing out of it.

Thank you note aside, if you’re a player collecting money to go to one school and decide to bounce after one season for a different opportunity, it might dissuade the bankroller from cutting a check again. It did for Aikman.

In Sat WSJ a story chronicling the young career of a wr out of northern California, Bell.
As a sophomore, he had college scholly offers.
His mom shopped him to street agents and LA Catholic school boosters paid his mom 7k per month plus a house
He excelled and his mom wanted more .got it from another school in area.
His mom overdosed on coke and alcohol and died.
A family friend took custody He got an nil deaj for 50k his senior year.
He committed to OSU and is redshirting his frosh year. He will be heir apparent to Tate next year unless #1 wr,Henry beats him out

In Cali, paying HS players is commonplace.
Probably have to take pay cut at UCLA.

Doesn't surprise me. These "kids" do not care who gives them money. That's the society we live in now...and college football will never be the same.
They were adequately warned, and went ahead with it anyways.........

People like to experience failure firsthand rather than take my word for it.

"Just the way it is" as they like to f***ing say. 😃

Did Troy Aikman just shade former UCLA QB Dante Moore in NIL rant?

Did Troy Aikman just shade former UCLA QB Dante Moore in NIL rant? appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Troy Aikman has never been shy about speaking his mind, and the Hall of Fame quarterback sparked another buzz of the widely discussed college football issue this week after criticizing the current landscape of NIL during a recent appearance on Sports Media with Richard Deitsch. Aikman shared his own experience funding a UCLA Bruins athlete who later transferred without so much as a thank-you.

What began as a conversation about Lane Kiffin’s messy Ole Miss exit soon shifted toward player movement and NIL. The legendary field general revealed that he personally contributed NIL money to a UCLA player, only to feel burned by the outcome.

“I gave money to a kid, I won’t mention who,” Aikman said. “I’ve done it one time at UCLA, never met the young man. He was there a year, he left after the year. I wrote a sizable check, and he went to another school. I didn’t even get so much as a thank you note. So, it’s one of those deals, to where I’m done with NIL. I want to see UCLA be successful, but I’m done with it.”

Aikman did not identify the player, but his comments immediately fueled speculation pointed to Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, who started five games for the Bruins as a true freshman in 2023 before entering the portal and joining the Ducks the following offseason.

After redshirting behind Dillon Gabriel in 2024, Moore broke out as Oregon’s starter this year, leading the No. 5 Ducks to an 11-1 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Aikman, who famously transferred from Oklahoma to UCLA in 1986 after losing his starting job in Norman due to an injury, said he firmly supports player mobility, especially when coaches freely leave for new roles. But he argued that NIL needs more structure when players accept donor money and then immediately bolt for another school.

His frustration reflects a growing tension among major donors who feel the system enables players to chase bigger offers with no obligations to those who initially supported them.

Aikman’s comments may foreshadow a larger reckoning for how universities, collectives and boosters navigate NIL expectations ahead.

And YET, there are posters here who think its in THEIR interest to fund NIL. Pure nonsense.
The posters you are casting shade at probably believe that a strong NIL can attract talent. You certainly don't have to contribute to NIL but then keep your mouth shut regarding the W/L record if you don't fund NIL (SWARM)

The never has been any ROI. The fact that so many people with money thought there would be makes you wonder what they were smoking. And once AGAIN, this is NOT NIL......
It amazes me that the current state of affairs can be labeled "NIL". The players don't have to do anything contractual to receive the money except play football. No advertisements, public appearances, etc. It is pay for play. No more no less

If I win Powerball tonight, I will give as much to NIL as I did before: zilch. Nada. Bubkiss. D1 scholarship athletes had already been receiving benefits worth double the national median income before pay-for-play was legalized. You are welcome to do whatever you want with your money.

Exactly right Gray. I've been saying for at least a year this is NOT NIL. This is not what the courts set down. NIL is fine. (See Caitlin Clark) Rev share is fine. This other nonsense through these "collectives" is exactly what SMU got the death penalty for. Nothing less. It needs to stop....

Take a poll, and see how many people think you've got your head up your A--. Better yet keep a tab for us on what your donating, (aka: wasting or setting on fire), and let us know what exactly your getting from your donation.
Just keep your yap shut about the product on the field because sitting on your *** doing nothing to improve it gives you zero (no) dog in the fight.

Hey dumb **** the thread is about NIL. Buying a package of peanuts or popcorn does nothing to improve the product on the field which is what NIL is all about. Do you really think your t-shirt purchase is going to help put together a $20 million dollar NIL roster next year?
So post your receipts for what you donated. The irony of this is that a guy who is part of the arm of alt right propaganda expects others to pay for something that he wants to see. Kind of like people who demand others pay higher taxes.
And here is the kicker: it wouldn't matter if Iowa had an NIL budget that matched Texas Tech. Stud offensive skill players aren't coming here because there are 27 years of evidence that KF doesn't utilize or develop them. OL and TE? You bet. QB, WR? NADA.
You might be the dumbest SOB ever to post on here.

Go find a mirror and take a look then you'll definitely see the dumbest SOB to ever post here. Keep buying your box of popcorn and telling everyone you're a big wig contributor to the FB program. LOL
