Many will say 2 group of 5 schools should not be in top 12...I would be fine with that had the approved system made harder path for group of 5 to get in

I don't think it was controversial for Alabama to get in over Notre Dame, their overall resume' is clearly better.

Now Miami, that could be a different story.

The selection committee has issues with schools that are Mormon and catholic imho
I know it is just your opinion, but that is a total and complete crock of s**t. BYU blew its shot when they got stomped by Texas A&M. Alabama did not deserve to get in after losing by 3 TD's to Georgia and their spot should have gone to Notre Dame. The SEC gets plenty of slack since they are in bed with ESPN. Being a Catholic University has zero, zip, nada to do with the snub. That is Bill Donohue-class bloviating. The selection commitee may be wrong in some of their choices, but the suggestion that Mormons and Catholics are their intentional victims is just absurd and a complete fantasy.

Miami beat Notre Dame head to head. That is a fact that can't be negated. Alabama was dominated by Georgia and lost to a terrible Florida State team, in addition to their close loss to Oklahoma. The last two in should have been Miami and Notre Dame, despite its horrendous loss to Northern Illinois.

Alabama also beat Georgia. In Georgia.

Regular season vs. Top 25 teams at the time: Alabama = 4-1; ND = 2-2.

Notre Dame lost to N Illinois last season, not this season.

But in the current rematch it was a no-contest loss for Bama. And I was too far into the Jack Daniels when I confused last year with this year re: NI. Stupid mistake. But I still think ND deserved to be in over Bama.

I have a feeling that as this thing evolved, any doubt was going to go against ND. Not because they are Catholic, but because of everything connected with their independence, like their deal with NBC as opposed to ESPN, and being an ACC affiliate as opposed to a full-fledged member. Any upcoming league meetings should be fun over the way the conference sided with Miami.

I'm of the opinion that the conference championship games should be meaningless. Same should have held for BYU though although you can make the case that they lost to Texas Tech twice by blowouts.

Still see no problem with Alabama over ND. None.

And ND refusing a bowl game is not the right thing to do. All the bowl games are meaningless now but it would have shown leadership to continue to play. Perhaps they should be ineligible for CFP going forward?

And they are the third team today to refuse a bowl game. The fewer the better, despite the ratings on ESPN and the amount people bet. Expanding the playoff to 16 and taking out two more bowls would be a good first step.

Which brings up something else. These 5 through 12 home field games will need some upsets to make them interesting. Last year didn’t come close. Ultimately though, I side with Seton 75 on all things college football. The TV highlight for me on Jan. 1 is when the Password episode pops up on the Odd Couple marathon.

So 30 years ago every last bowl game had meaning?

Most of the teams in the bowl games are a shell of themselves anyway with all the player opt outs. Notre Dame would basically field a team of backups.

Can players still opt of a bowl if they have NIL or rev share deals? How does that work?

Yes, college players can still opt out of bowls even with NIL/revenue-sharing deals under current rules, as they generally aren't contractually obligated to play; however, this is a major point of contention, and future agreements (especially revenue-sharing contracts) might include clauses requiring postseason play to receive full compensation, potentially ending the opt-out option for those who sign such deals.

With all the teams opting out of bowls, RU at 5-7 gets an invite….and declines?

Tough to play when you fire your whole defensive coaching staff.

On Notre Dame...next season they have 3 natural road games, 2 neutral site games and 7 home games

Notre Dame did the right thing to not play in a bowl game. In today’s world it’s more important to start retention and portal stealing right away than to play in a meaningless pop tart bowl. My biggest gripe w the playoff committee is that ND was in until the end. Why did byu get penalized for losing in conference championship but bama didn’t? ND would beat Bama by double digits today.

Understanding this is in jest, of course by the end of Saturday BYU had no credible case to get into the playoff over Alabama or Miami. Notre Dame has a case over Miami, but it's largely based on the committee's own ranking which had Notre Dame in and Miami five weeks ago. Despite neither team losing since then and both teams being idle this week, Miami leapfrogged Notre Dame this week and Notre Dame is angry. I personally would choose Miami's resume over Notre Dame's.

The CFP agreement with Notre Dame to grant them an automatic berth beginning next year so long as they meet certain criteria would suggest that the committee isn't trying to punish ND or coerce them to join a conference. To the extent that Notre Dame's independence worked against them, I would say it's because they scheduled in a way that, at the end, they ended up with 0 wins over top 15 teams and only 2 wins against top 25 teams, vs. Miami's 1 (over then No. 6 ND) and Alabama's 3 (including at No. 5 Georgia) wins against top 15 teams.

There is no agreement at all for anything related to the CFP for next year. It's just a meaningless Memorandum Of Understanding.

ND is gonna do something tomorrow
It's been interesting to read Bevacqua's comments calling out the ACC for their campaigning against the Irish. He says it's done "permanent damage" to the relationship. I hope he means it and that Notre Dame finds a new conference in which to park its non-revenue sports and basketball. They can survive as a football independent but having to play all those ACC teams in football is killing their schedule strength. That league is definitely not as strong as what the American was five years ago and honestly, it's not much better than what the American is today. A total joke masquerading as a "power" conference. Notre Dame doesn't need them.

Heard on the radio that by Notre Dame not going to a bowl fame, ESPN is losing like $30M in revenue. Seems a bit high but thinking ND not in a bowl has to hurt ratings and gate receipts.

And wonder now as others have said if this means ND is looking to leave ACC. Maybe a return to Big East?

ND lost $6 million not going to a bowl game.
