Why Can't RU Find Someone Like This?

If founded in the late 70s, then it would have been the 80s (probably late 80s) and 90s.
The article said shortly after HD was founded (1978) he was approached by a RU president…so if you count a decade as “shortly after” that’s Bloustein, if not him then Lawrence.

As a totally untrained and unqualified psychologist, I think he associated RU with the Harvard rejection. So, RU was a victim of the RU screw here.

Looks like HD was founded in the late 70s so that would coincide with Bloustein.
I heard it was Lawrence. Could be both. But having met Bloustein when he was President , I would be surprised if it was him. He was a good guy. Lawrence had issues

I don’t doubt that the story with the president was true. I would like to know which president it was. We had a few RU presidents. Why punish the school because one guy?
Why not? And punish is the wrong word. Rutgers f'd up, and they have to live with the consequences. And they have f'd uoany times since and continue to f up.

Sure. But also means you didn’t really love the place. Why give big money to a place you didn’t love. It’s not for better parking.

You jump to conclusions without any basis. Maybe he wanted to show his love for the place. Maybe the ask was so repulsive and ham-handed, he was so turned off he did not want to give. That's a donor"a prerogative. Know others with similar experiences.

Sure, but that president left and many new presidents after. Still no donations. His prerogative is to not give money to RU because he should’ve been at Harvard.

As has been pointed out, he can't have a prerogative because he is dead. He was a great man who funded lots of worthy charitable endeavors and institutions. Too bad Rutgers f'd up the biggest free lunch ever. You want to throw shade at a wonderful man and ascribe some nefarious motive with nothing to back it up.

Rutgers continues to screw up asks and piss off donors. Have seen it and discussed it with other donors. Love is a two way affair. The love you give is equal to the love you get. Rutgers does not seem to understand that, and neither do you.

I didn’t throw shade at him. I’m giving a possible explanation why he doesn’t give to RU. You can Google him and college education. All the sites say the same. He wanted to be a doctor and got into Harvard but couldn’t afford it so he ended up at Rutgers. My top choice was Colgate but my parents couldn’t afford it. I don’t go around with the long winded story when people ask me where I went to college. I just say Rutgers because I’m not ashamed of it like he was.

Who said he was ashamed? Maybe he raised the Harvard admission just to show he had the credentials and smarts to succeed, which he did. You ascribe motives to him that are your interpretation, and they all seem to be negative.

I was in a similar situation and actually was happy I went to Rutgers. But we are all different and have different experiences.

Your 1st part of the post is my point. He wanted to show people he was smart enough. Because going to RU doesn’t demonstrate that in his opinion. Keep in mind this guy is a billionaire. Why does he need to prove anything to anyone. But he does.

You should speak in the past tense. He no longer does anything. He was a billionaire. He went to Rutgers Newark. Maybe he felt he could have gone to a better school. But why dwell on this and speculate about his motives and feelings?

None. The alternative is that one president from 50 yrs ago wrong him and he can’t let it go.

No, there is the possibility that there was no follow up, taking your time and building a rapport over a period of years, or of other ham handed attempts later on. From my brief reading he had an interest in veterans. Was there any attempt to have him fund a program providing grants to veterans at Rutgers for expenses that the GI Bill didn't cover? Worry about football after a couple of successes.

My understanding is that it was strictly on the academic side. If no one followed up after the change of president/adminstration, shame on RU. But that’s highly unlikely. Time heals all wounds, if he really enjoyed his time at RU and was proud of his degree/school.
