I like bill busch. Always have. But tell me why he should be our next DC
I also like Bill Busch. One of the nicest guys you could ever meet.

He is a great communicator with players. As interim DC after Chinander was let go, he simplified the Defense so guys spent less time thinking, played faster, and attacked the Offense. Not saying he should be the DC but those are things you want in a coach. If Busch is wanting to get back into coachIng and I was head coach, I would at least interview him for DC or a position coach.

My biggest problems is we are paying for the mistakes of 2023 MR. Should have hired Jim Leonard, could have kept Bill around or called him to keep around.

Now a lot of these people are reaches to get inside.

I don’t think Leonhard would have taken our job.

If someone on here knows Will Compton, they should suggest that he lobby Rhule to hire Busch for something. Lol.

It isn’t his ties that made him a good recruiter. It was his personality and likability. He’s not a 60 year old rookie. Check out his resume.
Maybe you should. He has 4 FULL seasons as a DC. Even fewer of them as a solo DC. None of which were in the last decade. One of which(Co-DC) was at a power 4 school(Bottom feeder Rutgers)......Any other candidate we look at, with that small of a sample, would need to be all at a P4 schools with top 25 finishes....Or it would be a joke of a candidate.

Busch is a great coach and a loved advocate of our university.....but he is a horrible fit for this position and extremely unqualified.

He had an audition here and his defense performed well. Again, he’s the last NU DC to best Iowa.

He had other offers most notably in the NFL.
Dang so we couldn't compete with him being a senior football analyst at Illinois and then a defensive backs coach those are better than being DC here? Dang how the mighty have fallen.

He wasn’t interested in NU. I don’t think some of us understand the level of disdain for our administrations by college coaches. The Pelini, Eichorst, Moos, Frost, Alberts soap operas poisoned the well. We way over paid to get Rhule in part because of our history over the past 2 decades.

His defense beat the 2 worst teams from the east division. Got demolished by Mich, Purdue, Illinois. Lost to a terrible Wisc team and a Minn team that traveled like 40 players.

But he beat a 7-5 Iowa team that was 123rd in total offense. Good enough

Agreed. BUT I think we can do better. The next guy needs to be a great motivator , inspirational and a great teacher. Has to translate to the players what he wants. And has to understand today’s game and the changing landscape

Yeah you got me except I don’t think he was the DC for that many games was he? Diaco trying to switch to a 3-4 destroyed our defense.

Im old enough to remember when the publishers said we couldnt consistently recruit 4-3 speed rushers to the Midwest, like Gregory, so we were a way better fit for the 3-4 with ends like Jason Ankrah, Pierre Allen, Greg McMullen, Ben Stille, Freedom.

I dont think scheme matters as much. Bama under Saban ran a 3-4, Georgia ran a 3-4, Michigan ran a 3-3-5, some good Wisconsin defenses ran 3 man fronts....run a proven scheme under a proven playcaller and have your coaches develop players to that system. The front, and to some degree, NFL talent, dont mean everything

I don’t know how serious some people are with their suggestions but we have to look forward, not backwards. If you want to look back for the next guy it’s not Bo Pelini it’s Carl. He was the defensive genius. After he left and John Papuchis replaced him is when Bo’s teams started getting gouged here.
But we need to stop with all of that from the past. Maybe everyone suggests a former coach because we really can’t identify a viable candidate.

Gotta have bigger DTs to run a 3-4. I’m just not convinced it works against better run teams.

Also completely untrue. Glenn Dorsey was like 275lbs. Tony Whites DL at Syracuse 4 of the top 5 DL were under 285lbs.... In the simplest way I can describe it, it essentially depends if you are running a 2 gap technique up front, or a gap-out technique. Not saying those are official terminology, but for description. If your front is controlling 2 gaps, its much more dependant on being stout and holding the point of attack, so A: those gaps are open(no free blockers) for your linebackers to fill and make plays B: your DL can react and make a play to either gap.

In a gap out or attacking style scheme, which is what Tony White ran, and Michigan under Don Brown, etc. Where the defensive call dictates which defender attacks which gap on a certain play. Essentially you have guys attacking all of the gaps. This is why Tony Whites defense produced so many TFLs, because you have guys penetrating and creating havoc in their gap or behind the LOS. The con can be if your calls are off and slanting or attacking wrong gaps, or if you pentrate beyond the play it can lead to gash plays from the offense.

All give and take. All Come down to fit, scheme, and play caller.

I’m really not saying you’re wrong. You seem to know more than I do about gap schemes. Syracuse in their conference at the time versus what we’re going to face in the B1G is different though. I’ve already pointed out Aaron Donald as a smaller DT who could dominate at 275-280 pounds. That said, our problems weren’t just gap assignment scheme. We’re getting blown off the ball. IF we’re big enough, then we need to get stronger and use a better scheme. A big stout NT would help IMO if we’re staying with a 3 man front.

I listened. God, hearing Benning talk about defense is super annoying. The term "run fit" can GTFO. Like Busch said, we're just not disruptive up front. Talking about "run fits" is loser talk for making defense sound like rocket science because you suck at it. It's not that complicated.
Great insight from Bill Busch. But I'm convinced that Bill and everyone else just guesses at what Damon is asking. That guy is a master at talking a lot and saying nothing.

If you think he's hard to listen to on big red wrap up, he's even harder on hurddat podcast
Try listening to him on a game broadcast. After a good play happens, he'll just come out with "Steady Eddie. One play at a time now." and ramble on from there, instead of telling us what happened and why a play succeeded or failed. Damon never explains anything. Either he doesn't see the game well or he just doesn't want to provide color analysis.

I believe Bill is a good fit for just about everybody. He’s shown he can adapt to multiple situations and is a very likable bright guy. Demonstrated success in the job for which we’re hiring.
So, even though the guy is retired and isn't "all in" with the idea of even going back into coaching, it would be a sin to not hire him as our next D.C.? That's ridiculous.
