Both these dudes came from afar and disrupted the order of things in the Big Ten. I just watched a video of Cignetti discussing the upcoming game with Ohio State. Seems to me they share some personality features as well. What is the read on Cignetti's acceptance by the other programs around the conference... does not seem to be as obnoxious as Franklin, but he is certainly his own man.

He will get many opposing coaches best shots in the next few years.

I had a feeling going into our game with Indiana, that KF and Phil probably really wanted to beat him. And they did have a pretty good plan, about did.

The next time they play Illinois, gotta believe ole Bert and team will be plenty motivated.

There will be adjustments made to deal more effectively with what he does on Offense and Defense.

Despite not being alive for a majority of Hayden's time as HC, it seems like he always marched to the beat of his own drum, and damn what anyone else said. He had a certain swagger and confidence that made him really likable. His Fry-isms are an example of that attitude. Honestly, I think it's something Iowa needs. Kirk is cool headed and provides stability, no doubt that's a valuable commodity in today's college football landscape.

But the only reason Iowa was able to be pulled out of the basement and onto the national stage as a #1 team was because of Fry's aggressive, and dare I say cocky, coaching style. We'll need that same kind of coaching style if we want to get to the next level.

When Hayden arrived and was given that huge salary ( 45,000/year :) ) There were the big 2 and Purdue. Of course the non conference schedule was loaded with the likes of Penn State, USC, Oklahoma, Nebraska ( back when they cheated a lot ), UCLA, Arizona and Iowa State. By '85 we were playing Drake and Northern Illinois instead of PSU and USC. Iowa did turn it around with defense first. When we went to the Rose Bowl in '82 we had the best defense in the Big X at 13.1 PPG. Hayden said it was easier to build a good D with lesser players than offense...

Fat boy at Illinois lost 50-7 or something like that? Both teams were ranked going into that game so Illinois should have been pretty motivated before the game started. Teams have had 2 years to see what he’s got. He’s bludgeoning teams.

Please explain. I have zero idea what you are talking about. Hayden was a huge risk taker, especially at the beginning of his Iowa career.
Part of the Fry persona was as a Riverboat Gambler. But if you watch is teams, he was pretty conservative. Sure, he did a few fake FG's and maybe a trick play here and there, but even KF has done some of that.

Hayden talked a lot about a big passing attack when he first got here. Got everyone psyched for it, including the opponents. I think it was the first game against ISU Iowa ran the ball on every down on their first possession and scored a TD. Perfect Hayden!

Even more importantly he loses a top #5 NFL pick from the QB position.

Yep, Bert got clobbered. And in the interview after the game, Cignetti said that next week(Iowa) won’t be as easy as tonight was.

I just think calling them an easy opponent will not be forgotten. Now whether Illinois can do anything about it remains to be seen.

If I remember correctly, Illinois was pretty decimated in the secondary for that game.

Yes, but possibly some more than others.

Someone like a Dantonio or a Cignetti are likely a little higher on the list than a coach that they like.
Cignetti wants to win but I wouldnt put him the same sentence as Dantonio until Cig breaks some rules and lets players get out of jail on bail but play the next day like in 2009.

I think Cig can be a breath of fresh air because he says stuff a lot of coaches will not. I do think Cig melts down a bit too much during games.

No, hen played prevent D a lot with a lead... and lost it and think about how many times he threw across the middle... he didnt. Think about the times it was third and long and handed off to a back.

He got in peoples heads about something he wasnt. He was a psych major.

People barely knew who Mendoza was heading into the season...

Cignetti is brash but he has so far backed it up.
Actually,Mendoza was considered a top 2 QB in portal after racking up big numbers at a power 4 school( Cal). Beck of Georgia was about the only other guy like him on the market. Mendoza Lil bro was already at IU and could be the heir apparent or ciggy may go after another big ticket guy like Cal's frosh stud Samoan QB.

Exactly, Fry watered down the OOC schedule, why not, like he said ' Kinnick is full whether we play Oklahoma or Drake'.
Once Barry Alvarez left, the D turned to crap.

CC said 'road game vs home game' big difference in the league. Everyone knows what is going to happen at Iowa regarding the officiating.
Big Bert had 20 seniors and a good 6 year qb this year. It was his chance for an Indiana type year. He didn't get it done. But he ate well.

After the success of the guy this year coming from Cal to IU you don’t think people will be beating down the door to play QB there? I mean cmon.
How many NFL ready quarterbacks aren’t already the #1 at their current school? If they are that good they don’t need to transfer. Common sense. Just look and see who gets highly drafted and how many were portal entries?

Then why did he transfer from Cal to IU?

Going to guess he’ll find another good one in the portal. That won’t be a problem.
He already has one, Menendez little brother. He lost his qb last year too and reloaded with big Menendez. Lol. The guy is great coach. Research him a little. He runs great programs.
He might not make the playoffs every but Cig isn't going away anytime soon. He runs a great program everywhere he goes and does nothing but win.
Wish we had him. He would have done the same thing here as he is doing at Indiana.

That is one example - all I'm saying is it doesn't happen on a regular basis and to count on it being that successful again is foolish. It's pretty easy to try and prove me wrong but you can't. Show me how many portal transfer QB's are drafted in the first two rounds of the NFL draft one or even two years after the actual transfer. If they are good enough to be an early pick, they start at their original school and they don't need to leave. Yes, you may be able to get a very serviceable QB, but a great one - not likely.

You’re missing the point. He doesn’t need an NFL QB, though obviously he’d take one. There are always enough good QB’s in the transfer portal. And I’m just saying IU looks to be in a good place to keep getting them. I believe Kiffin and Ole Miss got their QB from a way lower level school and the guy can play. He also has a system that knows what they’re doing. He’s lost 1 regular season game in 2 years?

You are missing my point. You're all in on him as a coach and that is your prerogative. My initial point was he is losing a top NFL pick and time will tell if he is able make it work with regular portal entries.. And again and until someone actually proves me wrong - show me how many top picks were portal entries. Any coach can catch lightning in a bottle. We will see if he is as good of a coach long term as you believe. It won't happen at Indiana

You're using Mark Vlasic to try and substantiate a point? He was a 4th round pick and transferred when that actual meant something.
No he didnt transfer and played when backups were decent. Six NFL years on a non healthy knee. Not a lot of throws due to knee.
