Nice post from Mike Masco (Ch 11) on the ongoing cold pattern (with polar vortex lobes rotating through the eastern 1/3 of the US including our area every few days keeping it generally a bit cold to very cold at times) shifting towards a stormier, but cold pattern, with "blocking" developing at high latitudes, which tends to drive troughs into the eastern US with an active subtropical jet stream bringing moisture toward our area every few days, possibly resulting in wintry storms. No guarantees, but if this pattern for mid-December into January verifies, the probability of it getting wintry around here (cold AND snowy) go up significantly. However, keep in mind that it's much easier to predict cold temps well in advance than it is to predict specific precipitation, like snow, that far in advance. Many of the best long range mets are chattering about this now. Stay tuned.
