I don't know who I expected Penn State to be targeting but it wasn't this guy. Seems like a round peg in a square hole.

That does not seem like a step up from Franklin. He's an intense guy, can be pretty blunt it seems. I'm not sure this is the direction they wanted to go after firing Franklin.
PSU fans must be freaking out watching all the big name coaches get gobbled up all while they fired Franklin about two months ago.
Kalani Sitake is the name you're looking for. Seems like an odd fit but I can see why he'd jump if they're left out of the playoffs.
Familiarity with the program, the culture, the recruiting base, the fans, the administration, the conference, etc. is obviously not required, but it can be very valuable. Especially in a successful program like PSU. Starting from scratch with a new coach from 2,000 miles away doesn't sound like a good move to me - but what do I know?
Personally I would be inclined to hire someone from within or a B1G head coach or coordinator - or a former B1G head coach or coordinator.
Similarly with Iowa - there is so much more good in the program than there is bad. I'd rather not completely start over.

It sounds to me (admittedly, just as a fan from a long distance) that Penn State did the equivalent of bailing out of the airplane before checking their reserve parachute. You should never, ever undertake any such risk without a backup plan. I do not need to tell you the results if your main chute fails and there is no reserve.

BYU has a strong recruiting class coming in..probably some come with coach...and maybe their star frosh QB ,Bear, also

Maybe they're sticking to hiring Mormon head coaches with ties to Utah. It worked out well for their wrestling team.
