Isn’t Howle an alumni?

I don’t know - but it’s a significant downgrade to go from position coach at PSU to the same position at Virginia Tech. What’s the difference between Tech and Purdue? I guess Virginia is better recruiting grounds.

I don’t think I’m worried about any of them - next guy will definitely want Smith. Maybe Howle and Barnes? Alumni and have produced some talent over the years.

I would think next PSU HC would want Smith, Howle, and Poindexter. Barnes not sure. His DT recruiting has been only average.

Well they might be given a significant raise to go to VT.

I don't think it matters that much who leaves when you consider that PSU's new coach is not likely to retain too many of the current guys on staff. The most likely candidates to be retained on PSU's staff are the same guys who are less likely to follow Franklin—the guys with pre-existing PSU ties. And even then, only a very small handful might be retained.

Any coach without the true knowledge of knowing what it means to be a true, blue Nittany Lion!

Yes Wizard....he played 4-sesons at Penn State

2012 Senior Season
Howle played in the final nine games of the season, starting in the Senior Day victory over Wisconsin. He missed the first three contests as he rehabilitated a pectoral injury. He returned to the field against Temple and resumed his assignment as long snapper on all placements. Howle earned his first career start, at left guard, in the win over eventual Big Ten champion Wisconsin. He helped Zach Zwinak rush for a career-high 179 yards and Matt McGloin pass for 200 yards in the 24-21 win over the Badgers. Howle received his degree in kinesiology in May 2012. He earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the third time.

2011 Junior Season
Howle played in every game for the second consecutive season, handling the snapping duties on placements and serving as a reserve center. He played a total of 98 snaps, led by 16 in the opener against Indiana State.

2010 Sophomore Season
Howle played in every game, handling snapping duties on PAT attempts and field goals. The Dean[apos]s List student compiled a 3.67 grade-point average for the 2011 spring semester and gained Academic All-Big Ten honors in the 2010 fall semester.

2009 Freshman Season
Redshirt season. Howle enrolled in the University in January 2009, but did not play.

Given what PSU pays, extraordinarily unlikely - unless someone moves up on the ladder, for example from a position coach to a coordinator.

Huh? WTF are you talking about - these coaches are all "dead men walking" save maybe Knowles due to his guaranteed contract. A job over no job means going to VaTech is a pay raise. The question is not which coaches will go to VaTech, but which coaches will Franklin offer (because if he offers, they're going because they are all "interim" coaches with no LT job.).

Smith to GM . Everyone else 86ed.
No! The other big hire that needs to happen with this transition is an actual GM that knows and has experience, dealing with agents, contracts and all the other off the field BS. The key word there is experience.

They need to keep Smith and Howell. Those two are key. Both are excellent position coaches, leaders and recruiters. They'll need both, especially if the new coach doesn't have ties to the area. Smith recruits PA and Howell has the DMV. Both of those areas would take a big hit with Franklin leaving. It also helps that neither, played under Franklin and both have a deep respect for the university and the history of the program.

Wonder if Franklin hires JoMo as oc. They both have not been the same since they break up.

If I'm the new coach I'm definitely not keeping Smith. I dont see how that works
Generally speaking, I would agree. Interim HC back to staff coach. Terry Smith is no ordinary person. He is known publicly and privately to say this is his home. If PSU needs him to be something other than HC, he will be grateful to do it. PSU is the bedrock that pulled him out of Aliquippa and transformed his family’s life. He will choose to stay if given any option. And he will excel in whatever capacity is asked.

This one, this guy, Lando…it works.

Not arguing any of that. Completely agree.
I'm just of the mindset I'm bringing in the staff I know. Let's say it's Hartline. If he wants someone with Penn State ties and believes he fits that's great. Full support.
I'm not against the new coach keeping him. I just wouldn't.

Terry Smith played at Gateway (Monroeville) High School and coached at Gateway for a good number of years before moving into the college ranks at Temple.

I do not want him to be HC of PSU in 2026. That does not mean I am criticizing his handling of the finish of this season.
