Can't wait to go to some tennis matches this year with the family! Our youngest just started playing tennis this summer.

Some players are at a small tournament at South Carolina, 5 are playing the ITAs, 4 in Pre-Qualifying, 1 in the main draw

At ITAs:
Anthony Wright beat a 12 UTR player from Dartmouth 6-1, 6-3. Another 12 UTR from TCU awaits tomorrow.
Constantinos Djakouris lost to a 12 UTR player from Mississippi State 3-6, 6-3, 4-6
Chris Xu beat a 12 UTR player from Auburn 6-2, 6-2
Transfer from Georgia Niels Ratiu beat an 11 UTR player from Tulsa 4-6, 7-5, 6-2

In Doubles 1st round:
Wright and Alabama transfer Roan Jones lost to 2 13 UTR singles players from Kentucky 4-6, 5-7
Ratiu and Xu will play a 12 UTR and 11 UTR from Gonzaga

They do have some good recruits coming in next year, right. This team is relatively new and young. IMO, I think that was a good showing from them. They are going to get better with each tournament that they play.

Wright/Jones lost to 2 (13/12 UTR), from Kentucky 6-4, 7-5
Ratiu/Xu beat 2 (12 UTR) from Gonzaga 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-3
They then lost to 2 (13/13) from Ohio State 6-2, 6-4

3-2 2nd round, Schinnerer drops to Clemson's #3 by UTR, Djakouris to Clemson's #1.

Mayew did beat Clemson's #2!

UTR site is down so can't do full research but went 5-0 in first round doubles, 3-2 in R32 (Including a nice win by Mayew/Schinnerer over a good Wake Forest pair), 3-0 in R16.

Xu and Mayew dropped in singles round of 16 (To Wake's #5 and Wake's #3).

Jones in the singles final 8 (To Wake's #2).

Doubles goes 2-1 in the final 8, dropping only to the #2 seed.

I think this guarantees us a NCAA doubles bid to whichever team wins. And whichever team loses in the semi’s will have a chance to play the other Semi losing team for another bid.

Any singles win today also comes with an NCAA bid. I don’t think we came close to anyone making the NCAA tournament last year.

3 singles qualifiers! Jones, Mayew, Ratiu all won in 3 sets to secure bids. Wow, nice job by the players and coaches. All are new players for us this year.

Unfortunately their path made them take down Wright/Mangipane, pushing them to the 3rd place match where they lost the last chance to make the NCAAs

Five Tar Heel men's tennis players are headed to Orlando for next week's NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The NCAA announced pairings on Saturday.

Quality depth, but I think we will lose most matches at the #1 spot.

Here is how UNC matches up to the rest of the ACC by just UTR ranking. Note that they do not show Roan Jones in our roster yet, he is rated 13.31 which would slot in as our #2 and move our 2-5 red dots over one for a slight improvement.


Note that the bottom dot in every position is Boston College, time for them to drop tennis, not serious.

I agree. It seems like we have 5-6 guys that could play #3 or #4 on a top-10 team. But none really that would play 1 or 2. My prediction is this leads to a team that hovers around the 15-18 ranking slots where you hope you can squeeze out a 15 / 16 seed so you host the first two rounds. That is more gut than analysis, and maybe we are still a year away from that. We also seem to be very strong in doubles which can make a big difference when playing teams in the 12-35 range.

This was where we often were before we had a few years of top-10 results and very, very much better than the last couple years. I'm really excited to see how the season plays out.
