Was deal recruited as a point guard or a shooting guard? She is obviously talented but doesn’t seem quite quick enough to be the primary ball handler.
D is actually playing pretty good imo. They're sitting at 30% shooting with a 40-18 rebound advantage.

If our 3pt% was even around 30-35% this would be an absolute blowout.

Edit: I meant to respond to a different post, so forgive me if this doesn't make sense.

Um if they are going to play you that tight full court you screen the hell out of them.

Screens on the ball can be potential trouble if you don’t have excellent guards at decision making as it can put four people in a small space with potential for traps or run and run defense. Not saying our guards can’t handle it buts it’s not as easy as a person would think.

Deal 4 pts, 7 TOs

she has a long way to go, she’s not good with the ball in her hands

Overall to compete in BIG this team has to improve dramatically with floor play, ball handling and shooting IMO. Hopefully just early season funk.

I think it would be good to have more PT with Chit Chat, Rodriguez, Hannah, and Heiden playing together to develop the chemistry. Iowa needs Rodriguez. Without her, we're unproductive at the 2 and 3. Iowa lacks identity with two unproductive guards playing together on the court.

Didn't see the game but 22 turnovers against a team like Southern doesn't bode well for the future. Why all the turnovers?

Not in full court with the big. Punish their guards for pressing.

Jan has got to shorten the bench after Evansville.

stick with these 7 getting minutes.

Heiden
Staulke
Kylie
McCabe
Chit chit
ERod

that’s it!

Stremelow good for defense only
Deal for a few minutes but not with the ball
Houston to give Hannah a break
Hays to give Heiden a break
Mallengi when healthy as last resort

I agree with you regarding the big when you are breaking the press in a control fashion where you control the board. Not do much if you want to play at a fast pace vs a run and jump aggressive press. Matter of opinion and I’m not totally disagreeing, I’m just saying.

Addie will be in that other group at least against weaker competition. She needs to adjust to the college game and she just looks nervous + just making bad decisions. Give her time.

You guys! It's game one!

Jan is still trying to figure out what she has. Tons of players were going to, and are going to play for awhile. It would be awesome to win every game, that's just not going to happen. We are in experiment mode.

That team pressed the entire game, every possession. We were bound for mistakes. Way more than I had hoped but we will be okay.

All of you killing Deal after 1 game are crazy. Yes, very bad game from her. She's a freshmen in her first start. She will grow into the game.

At this point she is a TO machine. JMO, but she looks like she needs to lose some weight, improve handles, too slow to react, lacks confidence, and decisions are questionable. Hope I am wrong, but she looks overrated coming out of high school.
I didn't want to be the first to say it, but yes, she looks like she had been enjoying her first few months of college a bit too much (nttawwt).

She just looks a little "heavy" when she moves.

I'd have to go back and watch some of her HS film. Had she suffered an injury at some point? That might explain some things.

I came away from that game impressed with deal. The last 2 turnovers were sloppy. 4 of the 5 others was a good pass to the post, a shot clock violation passed to her late, double team poke away and a charge. The passing was excellent. Easily could have had 6 assists. The shot looks smooth. Defense was so much better tonight. Working on the foot speed and overall quickness will be something she will continue to work on. She is close though, the handles do need to tighten up as well.

McCabe, Chit Chat, stuelke, Heiden, Rordriguez all played really solid games. Streamflow other than a little out of control seemed to be in the right spot several times. We just needed a few more shots to fall. This reminds me a lot of the Tennessee game last year. Ball handling was a little rough and got much better as the season went along.
