lololo... COULD we wait till later in the actual season to make such assessments? Literally anyone of 5 or 6 players COULD lead Iowa in scoring...
I for one support your stance that an Iowa women’s basketball message board is no place for posting thoughts on the potential of Iowa players. Mods, please move that post to the Emely Rodriguez message board.

Could Rodriguez lead this team in scoring 🤔
Yes I do believe so. She can score and can get her own bucket being fluid, tall, and skilled, with an uncanny knack shown in this game finishing after contact. She already showed in her freshman year in a power 4 school she can score. Minutes will probably come down to defense and passing ability.

Cmon. I'm just saying that making that comment after 1 game against a D2 team is a bit premature. I think Mallegni was one of the leading scorers in last years pre season game and many had her starting by B1G season. I do think ERod will have a good year, and she will be a good fit for this team. I've said all along that she's probably a better fit to start at that three spot then Kylie as I think she's more skilled. Sorry, if I upset your sensibilities......

We (well, I) have one data point and her athleticism after contact was outstanding. And her 3 point ball looked good. If she plays defense and does what is asked of her earning minutes, she could very well be our leading scorer. But, she could not be.

I believe she has shown an ability to attack the basket with a physicality that the rest of our
perimeter players have not demonstrated. That will be valuable. Vs a D2 school she seemed to be solid defensively. She technique, positioning, and apparent “want to” looked good. We will see vs Big Ten competition

But I don't think that's exactly a surprise. Watching Rodriguez clips from last season, you could already tell she was a physical and skillful player. And nobody expects that from McCabe and Kylie. They contribute in a different way. These are choices Jan will make during the season about what is most valuable and useful in each situation. Kylie defensive skills and her super senior leadership, McCabe 3-point shooting or Rodriguez offensive skills and physicality. I think it's a good problem to Jan have.

I thought having a senior core of Kylie, Taylor, amd Hannah would put us in great shape for this year. But we now have added an even a better sophmore group - Heiden, Rodriguez, and Chit-Chat. Then add in Deal, Stremlow, and Hays . . .

And, Journey Houston is raw, but she has quick, quick feet on defense. She can be a great lockdown defender this year.
I’ve known Journey since she was a little girl. I’m looking forward to see how her game translates to the Big Ten.

I’ve been wondering and asking about Houston for some time. She was completely overshadowed by the publicity around Deal. Props to HIWILLE for giving us some first hand accounts.
The negative with Houston was she stopped growing. She was always a post until maybe junior year? Willie saw her play more than me. I know Rucker started playing her more on the perimeter the last 2 years. What positions did she play in the Ashland game?

Sorry your posts come off as some of the posts in the Off topic forum without acknowledging the facts. Let’s discuss logically- read my initial post- I said she had some struggles specifically on the defensive side. Remembering back to the freshman year I remember some passes that the other offensive players weren’t ready for and some bad shots for the flow or points of the game. Our team was still a work in progress and Clark was still figuring out how to become a leader and lead her team. I remember several Ole’s on defense not much different that what most are being critical on here of deal.

The majority of my post was a point that offensive players can struggle on the defensive side. It often takes a year to maintain the defensive intensity required to be successful. I am one of the biggest Clark fans out there but please don’t sugar coat Clark especially her freshman season. There are multiple articles out there speaking of the struggles her freshman year, the tantrums and discussions with Bluder and the coaches. Specifically on being a leader and learning how to push her teammates to be better with the fine line of not being a total jerk. She still became one of the greatest players to play college basketball. Sports is all about the struggle, no one is given success.
Honestly, Clark is a horrible help side defender.

Correct. Other then her and Deal, (yes I think after a number of games we'll see Deals all around offensive skill) none of our veteran guards are go to scorers. I actually have more faith in Stremlows development then the two seniors offensively. While this washes out we'll lean heavily on the post feeding Hannah and Ava. Just from watching the ex game, its clear that Layla Hays will have to get her minutes in short spurts. She has some skills and the size you can't teach but she is not ready conditioning wise for the pace that Jan wants to play at. She was gassed quickly running the floor. Still I think she can give Ava a breather and bang down low.

My other big take from the scrimmage is boy am I going to miss Lucy. That awesome smile and bounce she always played was so contagious. It made the game so much fun for everyone. That was one of the things I enjoyed most about Hawkeye basketball. I hope this years team can find that same joy.

I was wondering about her listed height a bit. She's listed as 5'11, but when she's standing next to the 6' players like Kylie and Addie, it seems like Journey is at least as tall if not slightly taller than them
