What a 10 year run for Phil Parker when it comes to giving up less than 20 points/game (no other program comes close)

If you recall, when KF was hired as head coach he took a few months to assemble his staff- right up to the opening of spring ball. The defensive backs coach was Phil Parker, an MSU grad who played for the Spartans.

When Norm stepped down Phil was promoted to defensive coordinator. He has since become arguably the best DC in college football, and has been for a while.

Say what you wan about Kirk, he makes good choices to lead the defense.

I remember the Illinois game very well. Remember all 3 phases leaving plays on the field.

Never said a loss has to be on all 3 phases equally. But that they are team losses. I guarantee there wasn't one member of that team that didn't experience Illinois as a team loss.

Context may matter to you, but it does not matter to me.

At least, not in sports. When the game is over the verdict is already in. There is no deliberation, no opinions, no context. There is a W and an L.

That's the beauty of sports. It's clarity and it's finality. Our opinions (context) are a disrespect to the very nature of sports. Nobody cares about them and they are not footnoted in the record book

I will add that in 27 years Iowa has had one head coach and two defensive coordinators.

Or let's try this one:

Quarterback throws the ball. Pass is intercepted. No context = blame the Quarterback

Or in your case, you wouldn't "blame" anyone, because it's not our right to blame players for making mistakes. That should only be reserved for the coaches, and we should instead commend the defensive player for making a fine play..................

1. Yes, every game and loss has plays left on the field by all 3 phases. That's the point. They are all team losses.

2. If the team members experience wins and losses as team wins and losses, then that's what they are. No matter what fans may try to say differently. Yes, that is the point.

3. Context mattering to you guys is why I laugh at you.

4. "Context", as it is applied on this board, is overwhelming a word used to justify the endless complaining. Overall, the level of complaint hurled at the Iowa football program and its coach has been unwarranted. The results speak for themselves. "Context" is merely an attempt to justify the unjustifiable.

5. Not sure what information upon you are referring that I was an unsuccessful football coach. But I know I have the courtesy to never allude to your job performance.

6. Yes, the record book is exactly what I'm talking about. In that world, context does not matter. And when fans try to place importance on context over results, inherently their complaints are unwarranted

And the bottom line is always how much your team scores vs how many points your team allows. Period. Yeah, the hawk passing game wasnt #50 in the country but it was better and more timely and the eye test was it was getting better at chunk plays and converting first downs.
