NU coaches are … average?

Above average in securing talent. Obviously outside of the OL. And the DL, for one season anyway, is understandable. But everywhere else? We do have decent talent. Hell—name the last time we had even near this much talent at QB, WR, TE, DB and LB—across the board! Special teams too.

But what we do with that talent? HC, OC, and DC? With the facilities, fans, history, money? Way below average. We should dominate teams like Maryland, Minnesota and NW. we go 2-1, and the two were total squeakers. That’s not superior coaching by any stretch.

I know we all hate Frost but he did have that mentality of trying to kill the other team, now, he clearly sucked at doing it but still...

The rest of the Big Ten coaches seem to get an erection by just playing it close. It is weird. I don't see any long passes or blitzing.

I struggle to see average, but I’d like to round up to that. Our coordinators just aren’t…big 10 material.

I don’t know the answer. But I suspect that the basic responsibilities and assignments should be drilled in during the week. I’m sure some missed assignments or adjustments are discussed.

I see it kinda like golf. You work on swing and swing thoughts at the range. On the course you just swing away.

Dana called a good game considering our limitations and didn’t call stupid plays in the red zone for once.

Butler still looks like he’s trying to figure out how to be a CFB DC on the fly. He doesn’t seem to understand that 2nd and 10 or 3rd and medium are still running downs.

Ekeler is far and away the best coordinator and the reason we have been able to win some conference games.

Hard to tell with position coaches but I think we all know who the dead weight is there.

Overall a very hodgepodge collection of staff and players without a clear identity.

With the talent we have at QB, WR, TE and RB, I think we are woefully underperforming. Yes the OL absolutely sucks!! But the OC’s very most basic job is to work around weaknesses and exploit strengths. I don’t see that happening.

We do have superior talent at the skill positions compared to majority of our opponents, but if the OL doesn’t perform well it really doesn’t matter who you have. Which is why the hate for Donnie is completely warranted, given that he’s the longest tenured coach on staff with nothing to show for it.

All I am saying is that Dana seemed to learn from prior mistakes. Running the ball, quick screens, and RPOs are about as much as we can do with this putrid OL.

I know that this has NOT happened but it is almost like a gentlemen's agreement was reached years ago...

"Hey, look, we know OSU is the top dog...how about if the rest of us just all agree to sort of trade off wins/close games with each other and pretend like we all play amazing defense and smart offense."

Frost’s biggest problem as much as we bitched about it, wasn’t him or his QBs. It was his defense. Yeah he made some bone headed coaching decisions but our defense was largely putrid. O put up some numbers.

Frost is the worst Head Coach ever at Nebraska. Why? Because he was from here, played here, should have understood the culture here. A total **** Up!

I think some of the O line’s performance lies at Dana’s feet. Our Right tackles in particular struggle in pass pro soooo….call more run plays. That worked today.

Frost could be a good OC with a good head coach. Maybe he could be successful as a head coach with a really good DC. I respect Riley’s football knowledge but he wasn’t exactly a master motivator. Soft. Two guys with holes in their games. Riley is a guy I would love to have coach my high schoolers 😉

The problem with most head coaches is their hires. Assistants and talent are who wins. Their loyalties to guys they won with at temple, UCF, and Oregon State aren’t probably good for Nebraska

I’m not bringing the same CFO to run Microsoft that I had at Smith and Son software.

it’s what killed all 3 of our coaches. One or two guys maybe but mostly complete staffs, no way.

Rhule’s offenseive hires out of the gate were just bad. Very very bad. Not one good hire. He’s trying to correct that. Still has two on that side to fix

I'll give Dana credit for running more because he had to, but it shouldn't have taken this long to figure it out.

He was forced to run more cause of last week and our RT situation.

I'm still baffled how the game plan at Minnesota didn't run through EJ, complete mistake.

Tom could fix assistants. I listened to somebody years ago talk about how Tom would give assistants extra help and time if they needed that. If he couldn’t get you up to speed in 2-3 years he would help them find another job. I think Rhule was somewhat limited on who he could get with a fairly short timeframe to fill his staff. Satterfield as OC looks pretty weak. TE and WR were definitely weak but some of that was due to Trev trying to get him to hire a guy with Husker ties. One guy kind of upset the apple cart by backing out.
